Ever since Microsoft first made Windows Phone 7.8 official, we've anxiously been awaiting the day it would start filling us in on some of the details, not the least of which being when we could finally hope to see the update start arriving for existing handsets. Recently, we've heard some WP7.8 talk out of Microsoft China, and learned of some less-than-useful statements from an MS spokesperson, but have still been looking forward to a nice, official, firm statement about the update's arrival. Well, that day is finally here (or as close as we're going to get to it), and a new Microsoft blog ...

Then we talk about Apple's sales results this holiday season, which continue to surprise. We end today's show talking about Microsoft, the possibility of an Apollo+ Windows Phone 8 upgrade along with the bad news of no specific date for the Windows Phone 7.8 upgrade. Where the heck is Windows Phone 7.8? We've heard Microsoft's division in China talking about its expectations for the update's release, and just got a look at a Nokia 510 running the platform, but by-and-large Microsoft's been exceptionally quiet when it comes to discussing its plans for WP7.8's arrival. All the secrecy finally got the best of Paul Thurrott, who over the weekend posted a scathing criticism of the manner in which Microsoft has been treating its user base. While that still wasn't enough to squeeze any official word of when the update would arrive out of Microsoft, it did ...

Depending on who you ask and who you tend to believe Windows Phone 7.8 will arrive in early 2013, soon, in December or in the coming weeks. Fingers crosse it will happen before the Holidays -- and for everybody who needs it, regardless of make, model or carrier -- but regardless of the exact date, it is time, as usual when releases get closer, for some leaks. This time it's the Lumia 510, the most recent addition to Nokia's budget Lumia Windows Phone line-up, to flex its muscles. In the video below, coming from China, we're seeing the upcoming Windows Phone refresh for seven-devices ...

Just when will Windows Phone 7.8 finally make its debut? There's been a lot of talk on this topic over the past week or so, and just like today's update, a lot of that news has been coming out of Southeast Asia. First we saw a leak that suggested WP7.8 wouldn't arrive until sometime in early 2013, but just a little bit later we heard about a Microsoft event in Singapore that informed participants that the software had already been RTMed and would be landing in a matter of weeks, if not days. That's definitely sounding more and more like a certainty, upon a Microsoft China exec making ...

Regardless of when it will hit, early next year or soon, Windows Phone 7.8 should close the gap between legacy Windows Phones and fresh devices which are delivered with Windows Phone 8 on board. Of course, features which imply the newest hardware, like NFC, will be missing, but there should be some pretty cool bits inside for older devices. Contacted by a worried customer, LG Poland has replied to an e-mail regarding the Windows Phone 7.8 update for the LG Optimus 7, the manufacturer's first Windows Phone alongside the 7Q. Despite being constantly updated to NoDo, Mango and then Tango, the ...

Nokia's leaked alleged training documents for China that implied Windows Phone 7.8 should arrive in early 2013 are actually wrong, if a new report is to be believed. At a Windows Phone 8 Briefing held by Microsoft Singapore and Nokia Singapore the audience has reportedly been told that Windows Phone 7.8 is just a matter of days to weeks away. Part of what has supposedly been said is also the fact that Windows Phone 7.8 has been released to manufacturing (RTM) this week. As a direct consequence the refresh should purportedly be pushed to devices in the very near future, in the coming ...

Surely all current Windows Phone 7.x customers were promised an upgrade to Windows Phone 7.8 in order to guarantee a standardized experience with Windows Phone 8. The problem is that as with all things Microsoft, dates are never included. According to Nokia's training manuals for China, the wait for 7.8 shouldn't be far off. It's scheduled for some time in early 2013, though early can go as far as six months if you ask certain companies. The good news are mostly in the features though. It seems that Microsoft is planning on making Windows Phone 7.8 just as feature packed as Windows Phone ...

We've been hearing a lot these last few days about Windows 8 and its more-mobile companion, Windows Phone 8, but precious little about the interim OS upgrade, 7.8. The decimal-laden version hasn't gotten much press of late, leading us to wonder just what's in store for owners of the current crop of Windows Phone 7 devices, which won't be able to run Microsoft's newer OS. We already knew 7.8 would offer support for new Live Tile sizes and that it would accordingly look the part of Windows Phone 8, but further details were sparse. Despite the iterative nature implied by its x.x version ...

The mobile world is no stranger to litigation, and 2012 has been a year pockmarked with legal battles of all shapes and sizes. While most of the action has centered around Apple and Samsung, today papers are being served on Microsoft, which just a few days ago unveiled its new Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 platforms. The complainant, SurfCast, is a self-proclaimed operating-system designer headquartered in Portland, Maine. The complaint centers around Windows' use of Live Tiles in the Metro Windows 8 Store Style layout, which SurfCast claims it developed. The company's website says the ...

Even with Windows Phone 8 about to hit the scene, Nokia's far from done with WP7, and we've heard about the company's work on an all-new handset along those lines, the Lumia 510. Earlier this month, we got the chance to check out a couple images of the phone in the wild, where it still appeared to be running Tango. We're still anxious to get a closer look at the hardware itself, but in the meantime we have a fresh test pic from the 510's camera to check out. Snapped last week, the image's EXIF data reports it as coming from the Lumia 510, as well as confirms that the phone isn't yet ...

Make no mistakes about it: low-end is still big business when it comes to smartphones, especially as such hardware expands into new markets. While Nokia's got its Lumia 820 and 920 for the Windows Phone 8 launch, we've also heard about new hardware that will instead run Windows Phone 7.8. This Lumia 510 has shown up before in renders, but now we get a chance to look at it in the flesh. It looks like the phone's still running Tango in this image, but that should quickly be remedied once 7.8 becomes available. The handset seen here closely matches what we saw in those renders, basically ...

Back near the start of the month, we heard a rumor that in addition to the Windows Phone 8 gear it was preparing to reveal (and subsequently has), Nokia was also developing a new Windows Phone 7.8 model, to arrive as a larger-screened version of the Lumia 610. We heard that model referred to by codename "Glory" then, but now we may have the handset's official name, as certification documents in China reveal Nokia's Lumia 510. Sure enough, this is still a low-end model, with that same 800MHz processor and 256MB RAM used in the Lumia 610. Like was rumored, though, the 510 steps things up to ...

Watch today's Pocketnow Daily as we talk about the official release of iOS 6 and what you can expect from it. Then we go through some recent leaks of Windows Phone 7.8, which sadly got pulled as early as they made the news. Then we talk about the iPad mini and the recent leaked images of the full device assembled. The Cyan version of the Nokia Lumia 920 is next because apparently we will get that color variant. We end today's show by talking about both the LG Optimus G event and the HTC Windows Phone event, which are scheduled for later today, and which we'll be covering. All this and more ...

The time is right for companies to start sharing the details of their initial Windows Phone 8 lineups, like we're hoping HTC will do tomorrow. ZTE might not be the most popular kid on the Windows Phone block, but it's looking to make its presence felt with some new releases, at least according to these new pics. What, exactly, are we looking at, though? These images are apparently from ZTE's own Dennis Lui, so we should be considering them to be legit. Even being real, it's tricky to know how to read all this. The first picture shows what could be old ZTE Tania hardware running Windows ...
