A couple weeks back, Microsoft started sending out invitations for a press event rumored to introduce a new Windows Technical Preview and give us a bunch insight into the company's plans for Windows 9. Sure enough, today Microsoft shared its vision for the future of Windows, but there's not going to be any Windows 9; instead, we're skipping that entry entirely and moving full speed ahead to Windows 10, powering everything from phones to TV-sized presentation screens, and set to start arriving mid-to-late next year. While much of today's presentation dealt with Windows 10 from a desktop ...

Windows finds itself smack dab in a period of transition right now. Users are shifting away from desktop PCs and even laptops to more mobile devices like tablets, to say nothing of smartphones themselves. And as this move continues, Windows becomes a more interesting operating system to us and our mobile focus. Windows 8 already saw tablets playing a major role, but missteps with RT and the lack of a cohesive Microsoft app ecosystem didn't do the platform any favors. We're already looking forward to what's next from Microsoft, and today we see invitations go out for an event that could ...

Remember when HTC delivered its Windows Phone version of the One M8 last month? In the weeks leading up to its release we heard a few names thrown around, including things like the W8, but the phone ultimately debuted as the One M8 for Windows. Specifically “Windows,” not “Windows Phone.” Compare that to the company's previous WP entries: models with names like the Windows Phone 8X by HTC. What happened to that “Phone” part? This may be just the start of a larger trend, as multiple reports arrive that Microsoft is getting ready for a major Windows Phone re-branding effort, in ...

Microsoft hasn't necessarily enjoyed much success with the launch of Windows 8, and the same can be said about its spinoff to Windows RT. Windows Phone 8 has seen some moderate success though, but it's clear that the company is desperate for a positive change in its results. For some, the smartest thing to do would be to start over, that's exactly what Microsoft plans to do under Nadella's administration. Sources close to Microsoft claim that the company is preparing to announce its next version of Windows in an event on September 30th. At the moment, both the date and the name for this ...

A little over two months ago, Microsoft introduced its version of Office for the iPad. While that was fantastic to see arrive, if not quite a bit overdue, it also managed to help punctuate just where Microsoft's mobile aspirations for Office were still lacking; for instance, we had Office Mobile for Android smartphones, and Microsoft even made it free for home use, but there was still no Android tablet version. A new report not only affirms that such an Android tablet release is still in the works, but suggests that it might even beat a native Windows 8 Metro version to market. Supposedly, ...

2014 has definitely been a year of surprises for the mobile industry thus far. Some of them have been minor ways of tweaking how a company used to do business, like Nokia dropping number-based names for the Lumia Icon. Others have been more shocking, like news of Google offloading Motorola to Lenovo. Then there are those that just seemed positively unbelievable at first, yet we've slowly come around to accept them, like Nokia's work towards an Android-based handset. We find ourselves faced with another such seemingly impossible rumor today; will it similarly come to pass? Sources claim ...
