"Welcome to Q3!" That's the greeting Anton D. Nagy had for Michael Fisher when the latter talked about the sheer volume of news to cover on this week's episode of the Pocketnow Weekly. And indeed, the ramp up to the holiday season in this, the third quarter of 2012, has been packed. Apple, Google, Microsoft, Samsung, and a host of other manufacturers have all contributed to this month's veritable fountain of product releases and announcements, and Multimedia Editor Jaime Rivera joins us this week to talk about (almost) all of it. In this episode: Apple's iPad Mini and iPad 4, Microsoft's ...

Our Surface tablet has arrived right on time, letting us share with your our thoughts on just what Microsoft's managed to achieve here. You'll be hearing a lot more from us about Surface as we continue to dig in to the new experience, but not everyone who was expecting to have a Surface tablet by now is as lucky as us, with reports coming in that Microsoft is pushing back delivery estimates for certain pre-orders. Instead of Surface tablets arriving today, Microsoft has changed its tune to saying that some pre-orders will only ship as of today, and it could take until next Tuesday before ...

A large part of what makes Microsoft's Surface tablets so appealing is the thought Microsoft put into designing the tablet's various covers. Whether you're going with the Touch Cover or the Type Cover, they both look right at home on the tablet, and greatly enhance its functionality. Since learning just what kind of premium price these options demand, we may be suffering from a bit of sticker shock, but that doesn't detract from how cool they look. If you're interested in getting a little insight into how these guys came to be, Microsoft just released a short video talking about the Touch ...

It's rapidly starting to look like your best chance at getting a Surface tablet in the next couple weeks (unless you're order's already in, of course) is to head over to a Microsoft retail store. For those of you planning to make the trek, Microsoft has revealed an added incentive to help sweeten the deal, offering some customers a year's worth of premium Xbox Music service. We talked about Xbox Music a little last week, upon Microsoft announcing the cross-platform streaming service. While it's going to be free as an ad-supported edition on Windows 8 devices, a premium $10 monthly ...

We know that plenty of you were excited to see the start of Microsoft Surface RT pre-orders, as revealed by the responses to our poll. If you managed to get an early order in, you might want to keep a close eye on your email inbox, as some users are already reporting receiving confirmation that their new tablets have shipped. If you were holding off on placing an order, though, it's now looking like you're going to have an even longer wait on your hands. Officially, Surface becomes available on October 26, when you'll be able to grab a tablet at one of those pop-up stores Microsoft's been ...

While Microsoft is busy getting ready to release their 10.6" Surface RT tablet next week, Apple is expected to announce a smaller iPad.  There has been some interest in the smaller 7" tablet range given the popularity of the Nexus 7 and eBook-style tablets such as the Nook and Kindle.  Would a 7" tablet running Windows 8 or Windows RT be feasible?  Is it something you might buy? First off, it would probably depend on the screen resolution.  You can certainly fit an HD 720p screen in a 7" form factor and most of the Windows 8 MX style apps would probably be usable at that size, but a 7" ...

"Once we get a slow news week, we're gonna talk about this in-depth." That's been the go-to fallback phrase for the Pocketnow Weekly for the past few weeks, and as the holiday shopping season approaches, we doubt that's going to change anytime soon. On this installment of the densest podcast in mobile tech, we talk about the LG Optimus G and the Nexus 4, HTC's new Butterfly J, Apple's forthcoming iPad Mini, and the Microsoft Surface pre-orders and pricing. Plus, Brandon Miniman continues last week's riffing regarding pen-based input methods, and special guest Joe Levi the Android Guy, ...

There's a lot of excitement this week for Microsoft's Surface RT tablet which recently became available to pre-order with availability coming October 26th.  Actually, the pre-orders for the $499 32Gb version sold out the day they became available.  The 32Gb or 64Gb with touch keyboard bundles are still available, but the rumors are that Microsoft has only made an initial run of 3 to 5 million.  That's not a whole lot compared to the sales Apple gets with their iOS devices, and pre-orders are probably going to sell out by the end of the week.  So, besides the shiny newness of the ...

We still don't know what to call Windows 8 apps that are designed in the Metro style as opposed to classic desktop style apps.  A while back, our reader, Sergio suggested we call "Metro" Windows 8 apps "MX" apps since Microsoft has decided to not use the term "Metro" to describe their new design language anymore.  The reasoning behind this suggestion is because of OneNote MX, which is Microsoft's "Modern" "Metro" "Windows 8" style version of OneNote.  There's still a desktop version of OneNote called OneNote 2013, which will run in the Windows 8 desktop mode despite having some elements ...

Last week, Microsoft confirmed the date we had heard rumored for the official Windows Phone launch event, set to occur on October 29. Everything we've heard seems to indicate that the retail availability of WP8 hardware will follow almost immediately (or at least within the subsequent few days), but does that mean you'll have to wait until nearly Halloween to make your claim on a new WP8 handset? Perhaps not, as a new rumor out claims that pre-orders for such models will be opening over a week prior to the launch event, on October 21. At least, that's when AT&T is planning to open ...

As we just mentioned alongside news of Microsoft confirming the Windows Phone 8 launch event, Windows 8 will be debuting a few days earlier, with an event planned in New York for October 25. Back in September, we learned about some of Microsoft's plans for how it would introduce the Surface tablet to North America, with thirty-some temporary retail locations revealed. Now we get our first look at one of these "pop-up" stores, waiting patiently for October 26 and the start of Surface sales. Come October 26, you'll see Microsoft hooking interested customers up with Surface tablets from ...

Back around the end of August we were still trying to put together the full picture on just how Microsoft would roll-out Windows Phone 8. Some well-sourced rumors arrived that attempted to pin-down Microsoft's launch event for October 29. Since then, we've seen that date refereed to time and time again as the most likely candidate for the launch. With October 29 now just over three weeks away, Microsoft has finally made things official, sending out announcements for its launch event that Monday in San Francisco. Microsoft has been saying this whole time that, despite what it's shown us of ...

We just shared with you the latest pic to arrive of HTC's rumored Accord/8X Windows Phone 8 handset, which we've been wondering if it will show up at tomorrow's HTC event. With the clock ticking down, HTC has a new teaser for the event up, and separately, we've noticed something interesting going on with tablets at HTC's site. First up: the tease. There's precious little to see here, but that clock looks a heck of a lot like the one from Windows Phone, making us a bit more confident that at least some of the three rumored HTC WP8 models will be on the menu tomorrow. That doesn't discount ...

To say that we were very impressed with Microsoft's unveiling of its Surface tablets would be an understatement; considering they're the company's first stab at this form factor, the sophisticated yet utilitarian design really caught us by surprise. We've spent the past few months thinking about getting our first chance to actually try out one of these babies, and have killed some of that time looking into some of the rumors for what Microsoft might end up charging for the line. So far, they've been all over the place, from the very high-end to the incredibly affordable. We're still ...

Remember a few weeks back when a retailer posted some pre-order prices for Microsoft's Surface tablet that were nothing less than astronomical? It didn't take long for the truth to come out, that these were little more than guesses and didn't reflect any actual knowledge of what the tablets would actually cost. Microsoft has yet to provide the official word on prices, but there's a new rumor now that seems to be the opposite of last month's, painting the picture of a very budget-priced Surface. Supposedly, the source behind this new info comes from a closed-door session Microsoft held at ...
