One week ago Monday, we learned that Vine would no longer be an iOS exclusive, and the Twitter acquisition was finally releasing an Android port of its app. While Apple users had access going back to January, the floodgates were now open for their Android brethren, and given how much more popular Vine's grown since its launch, we were curious to see just how strong this Android interest might be. So far, the app is off to a very respectable start, and Vine has just managed to squeeze past Instagram on the Android top app list. That's a big deal, as when it comes to apps built for sharing ...

Feature-for-feature, the official Twitter app for Windows Phone may lag behind the software available on platforms like iOS or Android, but it still endeavors to do improve, and today we see the arrival of an update that manages to pack in a whole bunch of new features. More than one of these improvements are photo-based, like the app now supporting external lens apps in Windows Phone 8. The app itself gets eight new built-in effects filters. It's also now more convenient to embed a pic in a tweet your composing, and the app supports saving tweeted photos. Windows Phone may not have a ...

Back in January, Twitter took the logical step beyond text, beyond photos, and with the help of Vine - which it acquired the previous fall - gave users the option to embed short video clips. We've seen Vine shoot up in popularity since then, but there's been one big problem with using the service: so far, the Vine app has been iOS-only. Back in April, we heard that an Android port of Vine was in the works and would be out "soon," but the subsequent weeks passed without any news. That all changes today, with the Android version of Vine finally going public. All the core functionality is ...

Back in January, we saw an interesting new twist come to Twitter, with the release of the first Vine app. Vine let iOS users upload short video clips (we're talking six seconds short) and embed them in their tweets, adding a new multimedia element to the text and static pictures Twitter already had. At first, we weren't sure if this was going to be anything more than a gimmick, but a lot of users have been coming up with some interesting content that's winning us over. Now, we knew that Vine would eventually come to other platforms, but back when it launched no one was saying which, nor ...

We didn't expect to run the Weekly with a skeleton crew two weeks in a row - and it's a good thing we didn't have to. Mere minutes into this week's Tony-and-Michael-only podcast, Taylor Martin arrives to save us from the spectre of a fun, but low-energy, two-man show. In its place: jokes, laughs, and a lot of industry insight you're gonna wanna put your ears on. We talk phone batteries that can jump-start your car, what place Twitter has in music, whether we should be excited about Motorola's X phone or Nokia's aluminum Catwalk, and the strengths and weaknesses of Windows Phone, Facebook ...

Twitter's got its own built-in photo sharing, and you can always pair it with Instagram if you're looking to mix things up with some effect filters, but what if a still image just won't cut it for what you're trying to share with your followers? Twitter snatched-up a company called Vine back in the fall, and today it launches the new Vine video-sharing service, with an app available for iOS devices. Twitter is all about brevity, so Vine restricts its clips to six-second segments (though you can always go shorter). Like an animated GIF, they'll loop endlessly, and while this sort of short ...

There's a funny thing about an app store with over half a million titles: some of that stuff falls through the cracks. No matter how long you spend sifting and shuffling and swiping between icons, there's going to be some apps you just never notice. Now, if you somehow manage to avoid learning about a particular app even when it's been featured as Apple's iPad App of the Year, named one of TIME's Top 50 Innovations, and given the distinction of the top social app at 2012's Webby Awards, well ... that takes talent. And that's what I've got, folks. That particular, temporary tone-deafness to ...
