Last year, we were lucky to hear about developments in the Tizen world maybe once or twice a month. But the arrival of 2014 has really seen Tizen taking on a higher profile, and as we anticipate the coming launch of its first commercial hardware, more and more Tizen news has been coming out of the woodwork. Yesterday we checked out a possible render of a Tizen handset, though we had a few reservations about just how legitimate it might be. Today we follow that up with an in-the-wild shot of some more Tizen hardware, and this time with a lot more certainty that we're looking at the real ...

January has not been the best month so far concerning new of the upcoming Tizen platform. We've heard bad news about plans for just where Tizen hardware might be sold, bad news about carrier interest in the platform, and bad news for anyone hoping to see a Tizen phone arrive before summer. The only saving grace has been seeing invitations go out for a Tizen MWC event, confirming that progress is still moving forward to one extent or another. Today, our Tizen coverage gets the jump-start it has sorely needed in the form of a leaked render for what may be among the first commercial Tizen ...

Oh, Tizen, you just can not catch a break, can you? Last fall we were hoping to get news of the first commercial Tizen smartphones only to be told that we'd have to wait until 2014. And now we've been hopeful that we might get word at MWC in February, despite recent news of certain carriers getting cold feet towards the platform. Well, while there's still an off chance that we might get to see some new hardware at the expo, we're not expecting to see any big launches, as Samsung reveals that it's had to push back its Tizen schedule. The company confirms that it was initially planning to ...

Are the first commercial Tizen smartphones nearly here? Well, maybe, if we're to believe the latest rumors. Sure, they've missed the mark in the past, and all those anticipated 2013 launches failed to actually occur, but now we've got our sights on MWC 2014, and are optimistic that these handsets are finally about to see the light of day. Even once they're official, though, there's still the question of just where they'll be sold. We've already heard that the US is out of the running, and today get word that a major Japanese carrier is scrapping its own plans for being involved with the ...

They've taken their sweet time in getting here, but Tizen devices are on their way. While there are no assurances, it sure sounds like we're getting ready to see some of the first commercial models at the Mobile World Congress next month. But even if they do actually launch, who's going to get them? Well, we we saw one device pass through the FCC late last month, but that guy was pretty clearly destined for operation in Japan. While we still lack a comprehensive understanding of which markets are due to see Tizen phones, there's one we can now count out, as a Samsung exec explains that the ...

It feels like we've been waiting – well, pretty much forever (or, more accurately, a couple years now) – for Samsung to release a commercial smartphone running the new Tizen OS. Sure, there's been developer hardware, and non-phone devices running Tizen, but we've been craving a proper handset – one people will actually go out and buy. The word's been that MWC might be our chance to see what Samsung has to offer, but until then, at least one Tizen phone appears to have made an early showing at the FCC. The model in question is Samsung's SC-03F, a device identified last month in log ...

Earlier this year, we were holding out hope for seeing the first commercial Tizen-running smartphones debut this fall, but our expectations were eventually forced to shift forward into 2014. And while we have seen Tizen-based devices go up for sale, we haven't been talking about phones. Well, 2014's coming up on us fast, so when might we actually hope to see this hardware debut? Our eyes are firmly focused on the Mobile World Congress, as we get word today that invitations have been going out for “an exclusive sneak preview of the newest Tizen devices.” While that doesn't spell-out ...

After getting our hopes up that Samsung might just be ready to introduce us to the first Tizen smartphones, we recently got word that the company is once again slowing things down, and we shouldn't expect the first commercial Tizen handset until sometime next year. Sure, we've seen a good share of developer-focused hardware, but that's hardly the same thing as a refined mass-market product. We were all ready to settle in for a nice, long wait, when today we get word that not only is Tizen-based hardware arriving this year, but it's already gone up for sale. How did we miss that? It turns ...

If Tizen really is Samsung's future, as well as the platform the company would love to be using on a plurality of its smartphones going forward, it sure has a funny way of expressing it. After all, we've been patiently waiting for the arrival of the first consumer-focused Tizen hardware, and so far have come up wanting. Over the summer, a launch in August or September was looking possible, but we later heard that Samsung could be pushing things back. Then we were hoping for some kind of grand announcement at the company's Developers Conference late last month, but once again the only news ...

Samsung and its partners have been working on Tizen for what seems like ages. We've seen some early development hardware, and heard some ideas about how the first commercial devices might arrive. In fact, we might just be days away from getting news of the first wave of Tizen devices, with a big announcement expected for the Samsung Developers Conference in San Francisco, kicking-off this coming Sunday. While that might bring us some fresh Tizen news next week, we're not going empty-handed today, and get to check out the first Tizen tablet. The Systena Corporation may not be a name the ...

It is just not easy to sell people on the idea of a new smartphone platform. Today, we saw Canonical fall epically short of its $32M fundraising goal for the Ubuntu Edge, effectively spelling the death of the project (though Ubuntu will live on in other hardware). And earlier this summer, rumors more than once suggested that Samsung was running into trouble with its own Tizen platform, pushing back launch plans in order to address app shortages. So, instead of an August or September launch, as had once been suggested, we were hearing that October of November might be more likely, instead. ...

Yesterday we heard that Samsung may be pushing back the launch of its first Tizen hardware from right around the end of summer to a couple months later. According to what the sources behind this claim, this was a calculated decision made in order to give the platform more time to develop a respectable assortment of apps. We wondered at the time if this was a sign of much worse news than anyone was letting on, and it looks like we're not alone; industry rumor maven Eldar Murtazin has taken to Twitter to suggest that this isn't just a delay, but the beginning of the end for Tizen. Murtazin ...

With the first Firefox phone hitting carriers this week, the era of the platform upstarts has really gotten underway. In the months to come we expect to see a number of additional new platforms show their stuff, and one of the next to arrive has been supposed to be Tizen. Back in March we learned from Samsung execs that it was planning on introducing Tizen-running hardware sometime in August or September, but now a new rumor claims that Samsung will be pushing that timetable back by a couple months. South Korea's iNews24 reports hearing from its sources that Samsung is delaying its Tizen ...

Of all the smartphone platform upstarts currently working on their wares, Tizen has the potential to be the most successful. For one thing, it's got the backing of Samsung, who's just an unchecked juggernaut at the moment. Then there's the hardware, and what little we've heard so far – mentions of things like 720p displays – had us hopeful that Tizen would be home to considerably higher-end hardware than the likes of which we're seeing from the first Firefox OS efforts. Today, we continue to learn about what to expect from Tizen hardware, checking out some evidence that Samsung is ...

Yesterday, we started getting to the bottom of rumors surrounding Samsung's first Tizen hardware, taking a look at the User Agent Profile for the Samsung GT-I8805. That was a model number we heard before, when a previous rumor claimed the GT-I8805 was under development as codename Redwood, and there was also a model GT-I8800, which Samsung was calling Melius. Since then we've heard that Melius is actually an Android, but what of that model number, GT-I8800? It turns back up again today, only this time it's also taken on that Redwood name. That's very interesting; could both the GT-I8800 ...

Samsung's told us to expect the first smartphones running the new Tizen platform to arrive towards the end of Q3 2013 – sometime in August or September. We've heard rumors about a couple models in particular, codenamed Redwood and Melius. Since then, we've learned that Melius might be an Android, instead, but that leaves Redwood, attached to model number GT-I8805. Armed with that, the phone's User Agent Profile has been unearthed, which not only confirms the Tizen presence, but also gives us some insight into the phone's hardware. For instance, we've heard that Tizen hardware would be ...

In general, I like the idea of all these up-and-coming smartphone platforms. While I've got some serious doubts about their abilities to seriously compete against the platform heavyweights, it's always nice to see some fresh faces and give the industry a little shot of innovation. I don't think anyone has a solid grasp on the impact that Firefox OS or Ubuntu will make once they're full-on launched, but I wish them all best, regardless. Tizen, on the other hand, has been a lot more difficult for me to care about, and I place much of that blame squarely on Samsung. Tizen's been kicking ...

With the Galaxy S 4, Samsung has moved to cement its position as an Android heavyweight, but what of its other smartphone ventures? We've been talking about the company's first Tizen hardware for a while now, and it's been clear that we'd see such hardware arrive sometime this year. According to Samsung exec Lee Young Hee, we should see the first Tizen hardware in August or September; that makes us wonder if Samsung is planning to launch this device at ...
