Samsung's Unpacked event is now a wrap, having introduced us to the Galaxy S 5, Gear Fit, and reacquainting us with the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo. Those represent the major devices we were hoping to see, but there have been a few notable no-shows from Samsung so far at MWC: what about those non-PRO Tab 4 models? What about a long-overdue Tizen phone? Despite Tizen being the new platform for the Gear 2 smartwatches, its future with smartphones gets dealt another setback today, with Samsung CEO J.K. Shin saying that it's still “too early for a smartphone with Tizen.” In a story that's ...

No, you didn't accidentally sleep through the weekend and it's Monday already, when Samsung will be throwing its Unpacked 5 event. While we've still got another day to go before we expect Samsung to take the lid off the Galaxy S 5, one of the other big announcements we were looking forward to from the company's MWC showcase has gone official just a little prematurely, and overnight Samsung confirmed its latest smartwatches, the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo That's right: no more “Galaxy” this time around – just the Gear 2 (or 2 Neo). So what's new about these smartwatches, and what has ...

Something needs to change with the Galaxy Gear. Samsung's aware of this, and for a while now we've been expecting the company to prepare a second-gen Galaxy Gear for this spring, hoping to correct some of the missteps the first smartwatch made. But what, exactly, could Samsung be hoping to change? Would it finally open the watch up to operation with non-Samsung Androids? Could it significantly improve the watch's battery life? What about doing something about that big camera bulge on the strap? As we wait for answers, an unexpected theory crosses our desk, with the suggestion that Samsung ...

So much of our Tizen coverage is focused on Samsung that's it's easy to forget that this is not some one-man show. Up front, we've got Samsung and Intel in the lead, but there are a number of other companies involved as members and partners of the Tizen Association. Those include OEMs like Huawei, as well as carriers and software firms. This week, a whole bunch of new names join the effort, including a couple you should recognize. Out of the 15 new Tizen Association members, the most interesting may be ZTE. Along with Huawei, it represents one of the more prominent OEMs to get involved ...

The idea that Samsung could deliver the Galaxy S 5 in multiple hardware configurations with differences more profound than simply SoC choice and radio support is one with a fair amount of support behind it – it may not be a certainty, but no one would be surprised should something like that end up being confirmed. But while trying to suss-out the meaning behind all those GS5 model numbers may be a full-time job in and of itself, the phone is far from the only hardware in Samsung's pipeline, and today we hear a little about a couple new models from different families, a new “Value ...

We're all familiar with Samsung's Tizen efforts, and how the phone-maker is trying to somehow either compete with Android and iOS, or secure a position of survival should its Android plans, at one point, fail. However, that's a very brave hypothesis as Samsung is currently the most successful Android OEM, and the company has recently signed a ten-year cross-licensing agreement with Google (though Mountain View is trying to limit Samsung's customization of Android lately). The Wall Street Journal reports that Samsung's Tizen plans are hitting some roadblocks though, in the form of carriers ...

As we gear up in anticipation of Tizen's inevitable commercial launch, we've been having more and more chances lately to check out some of the platform's hardware. On Monday we had that render, followed by an in-the-wild shot on Tuesday. The latter we were told showed Samsung's model SM-Z9005, and that's the very hardware we return to focus on today, upon the discovery of an eBay listing for the Tizen smartphone. A little confused at what you see? That's understandable, because we've witnessed two distinct looks for hardware claiming to be model SM-Z9005. Last fall, we learned about ...

"Welcome to the Tizen Association, an industry consortium dedicated to providing in-market support and actively shaping the industry presence of Tizen." That's the message which appears when you visit tizenassociation.org. And I want to focus on the latter half of that sentence: "… dedicated to providing in-market support and actively shaping the industry presence of Tizen." In 2013, Tizen was mentioned here and there, devices were rumored, and we got a few glimpses at what to expect on the software side of things. The unofficial progress reports showed the platform growing and ...

Last year, we were lucky to hear about developments in the Tizen world maybe once or twice a month. But the arrival of 2014 has really seen Tizen taking on a higher profile, and as we anticipate the coming launch of its first commercial hardware, more and more Tizen news has been coming out of the woodwork. Yesterday we checked out a possible render of a Tizen handset, though we had a few reservations about just how legitimate it might be. Today we follow that up with an in-the-wild shot of some more Tizen hardware, and this time with a lot more certainty that we're looking at the real ...

January has not been the best month so far concerning new of the upcoming Tizen platform. We've heard bad news about plans for just where Tizen hardware might be sold, bad news about carrier interest in the platform, and bad news for anyone hoping to see a Tizen phone arrive before summer. The only saving grace has been seeing invitations go out for a Tizen MWC event, confirming that progress is still moving forward to one extent or another. Today, our Tizen coverage gets the jump-start it has sorely needed in the form of a leaked render for what may be among the first commercial Tizen ...

Oh, Tizen, you just can not catch a break, can you? Last fall we were hoping to get news of the first commercial Tizen smartphones only to be told that we'd have to wait until 2014. And now we've been hopeful that we might get word at MWC in February, despite recent news of certain carriers getting cold feet towards the platform. Well, while there's still an off chance that we might get to see some new hardware at the expo, we're not expecting to see any big launches, as Samsung reveals that it's had to push back its Tizen schedule. The company confirms that it was initially planning to ...

Are the first commercial Tizen smartphones nearly here? Well, maybe, if we're to believe the latest rumors. Sure, they've missed the mark in the past, and all those anticipated 2013 launches failed to actually occur, but now we've got our sights on MWC 2014, and are optimistic that these handsets are finally about to see the light of day. Even once they're official, though, there's still the question of just where they'll be sold. We've already heard that the US is out of the running, and today get word that a major Japanese carrier is scrapping its own plans for being involved with the ...

They've taken their sweet time in getting here, but Tizen devices are on their way. While there are no assurances, it sure sounds like we're getting ready to see some of the first commercial models at the Mobile World Congress next month. But even if they do actually launch, who's going to get them? Well, we we saw one device pass through the FCC late last month, but that guy was pretty clearly destined for operation in Japan. While we still lack a comprehensive understanding of which markets are due to see Tizen phones, there's one we can now count out, as a Samsung exec explains that the ...

Yes, Samsung continues, this time with Tizen and some leaked specs of their first device running the OS. Sony then follows as we hear that the Smartwatch 3 has just reached the FCC for review. We end today's show talking about the 3D printed 2014 HTC One that just got leaked. All this and more after the break. Stories: - Rumors ...
