The world’s first circular Tizen smartwatch is shaping up to be fairly costly, both stateside and internationally, and despite embracing non-Samsung Android phones for a change, its software still presents glaring shortcomings. But the Gear S2 and especially the Gear S2 Classic look marvelous, which seems to be going a long way towards making the timepiece a worthy Apple Watch rival. At least in Samsung’s homeland of Korea, the wearable gizmo is off to a flying start at the box-office, with pre-sale stock vanished within just two hours of the availability kickoff. As you can imagine, a ...

We had a source divulge some pricing details on the IFA-debuted and Tizen-based Samsung Gear S2 and now more wheels have come into motion on just what exactly is happening when and where. According to what's apparently an hours-long training video from Samsung Electronics America (it was taken down), the speaker informs us that the standard, Bluetooth-connected Gear S2 will make its way to the shelves of Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular on October 2. Sprint won't be part of the launch and it isn't clear from neither Samsung nor Sprint if and when the carrier will get this ...

Samsung has long been tipped to skip a number in the branding of its next-generation Tizen handheld to highlight the prospective Z3’s radical evolution over the original Z1. After a short rumor mill hiatus, the Z3 name started to pop up in online reports again a couple of weeks back, and various evidence seems to suggest a wider global spread is in the pipeline this time around. Of course, markets like India and Bangladesh, which responded surprisingly well to the Z1, will remain a major focus of the fledgling platform, and so, it’s fitting to see Z3 assembly kicked off in Noida. ...

IFA 2015 was apparently, at least in Hayato Huseman's eyes, all about the wearables. We glimpsed into the Samsung Gear S2, the Huawei Watch, the second-generation Moto 360 and quite a few others. This comes after a rather tepid introduction period for Android Wear as a platform and terrific, but not quite analysts'-expectations-terrific sales for the Apple Watch. With all that said, the people at research firm IDC think that timidity to buying a smartwatch might just burn off. First of all, the growth in the general wearables market continues on with a forecast 76.1 million units to be ...

Is it finally about time you started taking Tizen seriously? While at first, Samsung's efforts with the platform may have been interpreted as a petulant response to resenting Google's control over Android, Tizen's slowly been coming into its own, and that's all the more true now with the strong response the new Tizen-powered Gear S2 smartwatch is getting. But while Tizen's got a foothold in Samsung's wearable efforts, Tizen-powered phones have been a whole lot harder to come by, and after the failed Samsung Z launch last year, we finally saw Samsung introduce the Z1 back in January. So ...

Samsung does some really cool things, especially when it comes to displays: curved edges, round screens, and even screens that wrap part way around your wrist! That last one was one of the things that attracted me to the Galaxy Gear S - the big, beautiful screen that wrapped around your arm. However, two aspects to the otherwise amazing wearable kept it off my wrist: it ran Tizen when Android Wear was just gaining in popularity and functionality, and you could only pair it to a Samsung phone or phablet. This year's Gear S - the appropriately named Gear S2 - is still powered by Tizen ...

The original Gear S, which we reviewed late last year, was a hulking brute of a bracelet. For its sequel, Samsung sticks to the basics –Tizen OS, wristbound chassis– but almost everything else has been rebuilt, repackaged, or repainted into one of the most attractive wearables of IFA 2015. The company gave us a sneak peek into the new smartwatch here in Berlin, so join us for a quick look in our Samsung Gear S2 hands on! Are smartwatches getting more expensive? Call it a side effect of more polished designs, higher-end hardware, or even just the realization that consumers will actually pay these loftier sums, but whatever the cause, while we once saw a good number of wearables launching in the $200 price range, with more recent crops of smartwatches, manufacturers seem to have no qualms about asking for $300, $400, $500, and up. Maybe we're just getting distracted by a few particularly pricey options, but it sure feels like we're seeing a gently upwards trend with pricing. At least, that's what we're ...

What is going on with Samsung's Tizen plans? At least, while Tizen seems to pretty clearly have a future with the company's wearables, popping up most recently on the new Gear S2 and Gear S2 classic, progress has been much slower when it comes to Tizen and smartphones. While we ultimately got the Z1 early this year, we haven't heard much about plans for a follow-up; there were rumors of work on a Z2 dating back to the spring, with word that the phone might launch during the second half of the year, but it's been months since we've heard anything. As we wait to see what's happening there, ...

For the past few weeks now, Samsung's been crystal-clear: the Gear S2 smartwatch is coming, and it's coming to IFA. As we gear up for our trek to Berlin, where we fully intend to check out this wearable for ourselves, it seems that Samsung couldn't even bring itself to wait for the start of the expo itself, and today the manufacturer officially announces both the Gear S2 and the rumored Gear S2 classic. Having already seen the Gear S2 confirmed by Samsung, let's focus on what new information we're picking up today, starting with that rotating-bezel control. While initially believed to be a ...

Samsung plans to formally introduce its Gear S2 smartwatch – the company's first with a circular display – at the IFA trade show early next month. At least, that will be the wearable's official launch, but Samsung's not been shy about giving us a few chances to score an early look at the watch, first at its Note 5 Unpacked event the other week, and in a few official promo images that have emerged since. As we look forward to the grand IFA unveiling, Samsung's got something new for us along that same line, as a company exec shares another pre-launch Gear S2 pic, this time on Instagram. ...

Samsung hasn’t shied away from building buzz around its next-gen Tizen smartwatch the old fashioned way, previewing the circular Gear S2 at the latest smartphone-dedicated Unpacked event and then outright showing off the timepiece in a teaser video. What the South Korean device manufacturer didn’t reveal was the Gear S2 is likely headed to market in a “Classic” variation, as well. The name Gear S2 Classic popped up in source code on Samsung’s very own website, but unfortunately, we’re left guessing about the differences between it and the standard Gear S2. This could well be a ...

Samsung may not have been quite ready to launch its first round-screened smartwatch at its Unpacked event last week, but just because it's holding back the formal introduction of the Gear S2 until IFA next month doesn't mean that the company can't get in a few teasers in the meantime. Our first arrived at Unpacked itself, where Samsung revealed the Gear S2 name and gave us a few brief looks at the hardware; some additional pics followed shortly. Today we get to check out maybe the most detailed look at the wearable to date, as Samsung publishes a short video that shows off the smartwatch's ...

Going in to yesterday's Samsung Unpacked event, we had fair warning that we wouldn't end up seeing a new smartwatch. Despite Samsung having long confirmed plans that it's developing a new wearable, and one with a round screen, at that, rumors suggested the smartwatch wouldn't share the stage with the new Galaxy Note 5, and indeed, it did not. What we got instead was confirmation that Samsung would hold its smartwatch announcement back for IFA in early September. That, and an official name: the Gear S2. During its Unpacked event, Samsung shared a few quick pics of the wearable, and while ...

It's been forever since Samsung came out with a new smartwatch - OK, just about one year. Last August, Samsung introduced the autonomous Gear S with its curved screen. We've been anticipating a new smartwatch with a display that's eye-catching for a whole different reason, as Samsung confirmed plans to release a model with a circular face. Today at Unpacked it gave us a little preview of that wearable, briefly showing off the Gear S2 in advance of a planned IFA launch. That's right: this guy's going to be called the Gear S2, not Gear A as widely rumored. One thing the rumors did get right ...

Samsung's round-screened Gear A smartwatch may skip the company's big Unpacked event this week, but it's still due to arrive at some point in the near future – and right now, IFA is sounding like our best bet for a launch announcement. Those rumors from late last week also mentioned the possibility of multiple Gear A variants, but left us wondering as to just what sort of differences we might be facing: WiFi/Bluetooth versus cellular connectivity, or possibly something tied to the wearable's design? We still don't have a lot of hard answers, but a new rumor attempts to shed a little more ...

Samsung's latest Unpacked teaser may seem to be all about phones and tablets, but when discussing it we found ourselves wondering about the fate of Samsung's next smartwatch, the long-awaited Gear A. It's clear that Samsung's been doing a lot of work to get ready for the round-screened wearable's debut, especially on the software development side of things, and while it would certainly make enough sense for Samsung to bring the watch along to its launch event next week, that's far from a certainty. As we wait to see if the Gear A will make an appearance, we're checking out the latest rumor ...

We're two weeks away from Samsung's next Unpacked event, where the company is likely to introduce the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+. But there could be even more hardware waiting for us beyond those two phablets, and the timing finally feels right for Samsung to also launch its next smartwatch. We've been waiting for the new Gear for a long time now, and recurring rumors of a round-screened wearable have found confirmation from Samsung itself. As we wait for the Gear A to go official, Samsung's already busy talking about what sort of hardware we can expect. One of the first rumors ...

We're still scratching our heads trying to understand Apple's motive for not sharing specific Apple Watch sales on yesterday's conference call. That said, Tim Cook kind of teased the figure with specific revenue information, and that has led to some interesting speculation. Analysts are already predicting how the smartwatch market has evolved after the Apple Watch, and the changes are significant. Strategy Analytics is already predicting that the launch of the Apple Watch represented a 457.3% growth in the smartwatch market when compared to the same quarter last year. The firm speculates 4 ...

Samsung's got some interesting smartphone plans lined up for the rest of the year. Along with the expected Galaxy Note 5 launch early this August, rumor has it that a new Tizen phone is on its way, too. Yes, Tizen – that Samsung OS that we all thought was doomed to failure to some extent – is not dead. As a follow-up to the Z1, the company is busy at work creating a Z3 (because nobody liked "Z2" anyway, right?). And that Samsung Z3 has appeared today in photos, showing the device running Tizen 3.0 build Z300HDDD1BOG1. According to information exclusively obtained by SamMobile, the ...

For several months back there around the early part of the year, rumors had been landing pretty regularly about a round-screened Samsung smartwatch, codenamed Orbis and tipped to possibly launch as the Gear A. And while we've yet to see the wearable go official, or even get a look at the actual hardware, Samsung's as good as confirmed the project, releasing an SDK for round-screened watches that identifies this circular form factor as the company's choice for “the next Gear.” Now as we wait for an official announcement, a new leak attempts to give us a better idea of what to expect ...

Tizen isn't quite dead in the water yet, folks. Even though Samsung continues to keep its Tizen platform out of the spotlight – selecting Android for most of its smartphone offerings – the operating system continues to live on. New information has appeared today about a Samsung Z3 announcement perhaps happening later this month at the Tizen Developer Summit. The Z3 is expected to be Samsung's next Tizen phone, a follow-up to its mid-range Z1 offering. According to sources of SamMobile's, the internals of the phone are expected to be fairly mid-range, just as its predecessor. It's ...

We've been hearing rumors this week that new Tizen phones are on the horizon from Samsung, and the first of those to hit the market may be the Samsung Z3, if a new leak perpetuated by SamMobile today turns out to be accurate. The website says that Samsung will be the skipping the "Z2" branding for reasons that are unknown – it makes no sense to us that the company would go from Z1 to Z3, but that's just the state of the world and we're going to have to deal with it. SamMobile also says that the Z3 will bear model number SM-Z300H_SWA_DD internally. No specific specifications are ...

The launch of the first Galaxy Gear back in summer 2013 marked the beginning of what would prove to be a major wearables effort from Samsung, ultimately bringing us models like the Gear Fit and Gear S. And while the manufacturer's been on a bit of a smartwatch hiatus lately, we've got big hopes for what the future might bring, especially with the round-screened Gear A (aka Orbis) on the horizon. But when it comes to a prolific smartwatch maker like Samsung, how do we really quantify its interest in the market? Counting the number of models it's released? Looking at sales totals? Today ...

Even when you're a smartphone giant like Samsung, it's no easy task convincing shoppers to try their luck with an unknown mobile platform. But that's just what Samsung's been doing with Tizen, and after a bumpy start, the company managed to finally get a phone out to market, with the introduction early this year of the Z1. With over 100,000 sales in the first month, the Z1 looked like it might actually be a solidly performing model. But would that pace keep up over time, especially with the arrival of new Samsung handsets? Six months from the phone's release, it looks like we can say ...
