Just about one month back, we saw Microsoft unveil its latest tablet offerings. And while most of us were expecting something along the lines of a Surface Mini, Microsoft went and threw us for a loop, instead using its launch event to introduce the Surface Pro 3, just seven months following the release of the Surface Pro 2. That's very much some speedy iPad 3/iPad 4-style timing, and the short lifespan of the Pro 2 seems to have left Microsoft with an abundance of stock. If you can live without having the very latest-and-greatest, though, this situation affords you an opportunity to pick ...

The Surface Pro 2 was the best tablet that I've ever used. The new Surface Pro 3 brings a lot of upgrades to that device, but there are also a few changes that I'm a bit uneasy about.  First, we'll start with the new features that are just fantastic and make the Surface Pro 2 look like old news.  The screen!!  I love the 12" screen on the Surface Pro 3.  This is the size of the screen that I've been used to on my older Windows tablets that were running Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7. The 3 by 2 aspect ratio may seem too roomy in some of the Metro apps, but in desktop programs like ...

The original Surface Pro was a respectable tablet (and far superior to the first-gen Surface RT), but last year's Surface Pro 2 took a good thing and made it even better. Then first thing this year we heard that Microsoft was already taking things up a notch, and upgrading the tablet with a beefier processor. Instead of the 1.6GHz Intel i5-4200U that shipped with the Surface Pro 2 initially, Microsoft was transitioning the tablet to using a 1.9GHz i5-4300U chip – not an earth-shattering change, but a solid update, all the same. Except, do the Surface Pro 2 tablets shoppers are buying ...

One of the most exciting devices out of CES this year was easily Samsung's monstrous Note tablet, the Galaxy NotePRO 12.2. On paper, it's nothing terribly mind-blowing. It's quite literally the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition, which we reviewed last year, on a much larger scale. Inside, it has the same 3GB RAM, 32 or 64GB of fixed storage with expansion via microSD, a 9,500mAh battery, and one of two SoCs. Like the 2014 Note 10.1, the LTE variant comes with a Snapdragon 800 chip and the Wi-Fi model is fitted with an Exynos 5 Octa chipset. Both have 8-megapixel cameras, the S Pen, and 2,560 ...

One week back, we were talking about the forthcoming arrival of Nokia's quarterly figures, and floated a theory based on some of the disclaimers the company shared that the publication of that report might just coincide with the culmination of Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia's smartphone business. Well, that hasn't actually come to pass just yet, but those numbers themselves have indeed arrive, alongside a set from Microsoft itself. Let's take a look at how both of the companies fared in the mobile space in Q4 2013: Nokia's situation isn't great, but it's not awful, either. Bottom line: ...

Microsoft's Surface Pro 2 was one of the best tablets of 2013. Not only were we impressed by what we saw, but you readers voted it your third favorite tablet of the year, bested only by the Nexus 7 and iPad Air. Out of the gate, it was already a solid performer, running an Intel Core i5 Haswell at 1.6GHz. By now the tablet is less than three months old, yet Microsoft is already taking revisiting its design choices, upgrading that chip to a newer, faster component. Instead of the 1.6GHz Core i5-4200U that initially powered the Surface Pro 2, Microsoft is transitioning the tablet to a 1.9GHz ...

Six weeks ago, we came to you with a simple request: tell us what you think were the best smartphones and best tablets of 2013. In the time that's followed we've seen you vote... and vote, and vote, and vote. This past Friday, we finally closed the polls and got to the business of declaring some winners. With no further ado, let's start checking out what you chose, beginning with smartphones: With twenty-three choices, voters had a lot of options to consider. Everybody got some votes (though we have to tip a special last-place hat to the BlackBerry Q10, which managed to get an embarrassing ...

We've got to hand it to Microsoft for doing an amazing job with the design and the concept of their surface line-up. Both tablets are beautifully designed, and each caters to a specific type of customer in the market, since not everyone wants a professional tablet. That said, there's no denying that the guys at Redmond have struggled to make these products relevant, no matter how much money they've thrown at marketing them against competitors. Their Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 have been the upgrades that many have been waiting for, but it seems that not everything about them is perfect. ...

It's been just over a month since Microsoft launched the 2013 Surface models, along with a bunch of new accessories. While some of that stuff – like the Music Kit – might be of questionable value, one really stand-out addition that was announced was the docking station for the Surface Pro 2. With extra ports for connection to a monitor, wired network, and USB devices, it looked like it would offer users the potential to really tap into the full-on Windows 8 power of the Pro 2 (or the original Pro). The only real hiccup was that Microsoft revealed the dock wouldn't be coming out until ...

Last night was the midnight launch event for the Surface 2 and the Surface Pro 2 which happened in a number of select Microsoft Stores.  We decided to check out the party in White Plains, New York, and got to take a look at the new Surface 2, Surface Pro 2, as well as the new type covers and touch covers.  Check out the video below for our quick "Hands on" video of the new tablets. The Surface 2 feels very thin and light. The new silver metal color looks great and the new 2-stage kickstand will help to adjust the screen for the right angle when using the device from a lower position.  ...

Microsoft has a lot to overcome with this year's Surface models. While last year's versions had their moments, the Surface RT's sluggish performance and embarrassingly low sales really cast a dark shadow over Microsoft's tablet aspirations. This year, we've been wondering if the new Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 would be better received, and help to undo some of that damage to the brand. We'll want to withhold judgment until they finally start ending up in users' hands later this month, but things sure sound like they're off to a booming start, with Microsoft reporting that the new Surface ...

The mobile space is full of profound juxtapositions this week as Apple can't make enough iPhones to meet demand, while BlackBerry can't keep its head above water long enough to sell existing stock. Meanwhile, Microsoft announces its second round of Surface products, while soon to be-acquired hardware maker Nokia (allegedly) prepares its own Windows tablet - and the horrible marriage of smartphone maker HTC and audio baron Beats finally, mercifully, dissolves. That's the big news for the week ending September 27, 2013, and all of it -plus iOS 7 literally making people sick- awaits you in ...

Sometimes, even the things that make a ton of sense, fail to impress. When Bill Gates announced the Tablet PC so many years ago, the idea took the world by storm when it came to making headlines. What wasn't there to be cool about a portable computer you could write on, seriously? Well, the product failed to deliver in the bottom line for over 8 years, and the reasons why are still things many debate. In my opinion, the reasons why were mainly because the products were too big, too expensive and too underpowered to deliver back in the day. It just didn't make sense to pay more for a ...

Back in the 80's and 90's, if you were a creative professional using technology, you probably had a Mac. Macintosh computers were indispensable for the cool creative types.  In fact, the Macworld conferences weren't so much about the Macintosh computers as they were about creative software and tools that so many artists were using at the time. Most of the conference sessions were about things like learning about creative techniques in Photoshop, QuarkXpress, or Avid video editing. Fast forward to 2013 and Apple is all about selling phones and music players and cheap little apps these ...

Microsoft launched its new Surface tablets yesterday morning, following up last year's initial foray into this tablet space with a pair of models intended to address some of those earlier shortcomings. What we ended up seeing was OK, and already largely foretold by rumors and leaks, but I can't help coming away from the event feeling a little underwhelmed; sure, a lot of the new hardware sounds great, but is this really a brave new era for Microsoft and Surface, or just a rehashing of old ideas? Let's take a little look at what Microsoft brought to share, and then find out what you're ...

The original Surface RT and Surface Pro tablets were promising of a new Microsoft willing to adapt and capable of becoming relevant in the mobile computing space once again. The Surface RT, to be concise, fell short of our expectations. The software and user experience left much to be desired, with lag and a shortage of apps to blame. The Surface Pro, on the other hand, proved to be a much more capable and fitting device, though its starting price tag is cringe-worthy and in the range of most Ultrabooks. The Surface tablets haven't performed nearly as well as Microsoft was hoping, failing ...

Today's Surface 2 announcement sure came through with a lot of what we were expecting. That said, there were a few notable absences: we didn't hear squat about that rumored Surface Mini, for instance. Another thing that was largely glossed over was the issue of any connectivity options for these new tablets besides WiFi. If you found yourself intrigued by these designs, but your data needs demand a proper cellular network connection, you may be in luck, with word now arriving that Microsoft's been working on bringing LTE to the Surface 2. Microsoft's Panos Panay confirmed the news on ...

After months of speculation, dozens of rumors, and refreshingly little hardware actually leaking in advance, it's time for Microsoft's second generation of Surface tablets to go official. The company took to the stage at this morning's New York City press event to reveal its latest slates, the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2. First off, Microsoft started the event by announcing that it had two tablets to share - that seems to dash our hopes of a surprise Surface Mini. The Surface Pro 2 gets an improved display over last year's model, supposedly offering greatly improved color accuracy. Audio ...

Of course, even with these tablets still under wraps we've been talking a lot about them, and have heard all nature of rumors concerning what could be waiting for us. As we wait for Microsoft to pull back the curtain, let's take a look at what we're expecting to see. Well, for one we might not see a new Surface RT this year - or rather, we will, but Microsoft could be dropping the "RT" bit from the tablet's ...
