For a moment in time, it seemed like such a sure thing: following the first two generations of full-sized Surface tablets, this past spring it finally looked like Microsoft was going to introduce a more compact Surface Mini. In the days leading up to the company's May event, the Mini was the clear favorite for the new hardware likely to be featured, but at the last minute focus shifted to what we ultimately saw announced, the Surface Pro 3. In the weeks that followed we've been picking up bits and pieces of the Mini's story, like the multiple mentions of the device in the Pro 3's manual, ...

So far today we've been dealing with a higher-than-usual concentration of news surrounding Windows and Windows Phone, checking out rumors both about Android-running Lumias and Android app compatibility for pure WP8 devices. While that last report drifted into software territory, we're swinging back over to the hardware side of things as a couple new rumors discuss new Windows Phone and new Windows RT devices. First up, we could be looking at a new version of the Lumia 1520 phablet, the 1525. The only differences we've heard mentioned so far are that the 1525 would run WP8.1 out of the box ...

Leading up to last month's Surface Pro 3 launch event, we were very much expecting to see the Surface Mini, instead. Really, that's what we expected the main focus to be, and it wasn't until just about a week prior to the announcement that we started getting the sense that this was going to be a Pro 3 shindig. If we're to believe the rumors, there's a good reason we were getting that Mini vibe, and it was a pretty last-minute decision to not introduce the Mini. While Microsoft hasn't formally confirmed that was the case, it's hard to look at the recently released Surface Pro 3 user's guide ...

One of the announcements a lot of us were expecting from Tuesday's Microsoft event was of a smaller version of its Surface tablet, the Surface Mini. We actually saw a report just hours before the event claiming that we would not see a Surface Mini announced because of a fear of bad sales. We are now getting more insight into the reasons for why this tablet was possibly cancelled. According to Neowin, the tablet was cancelled two or days before it was set to be revealed. Word is out that Microsoft may have a stash of 15 to 20 thousand of these tablets already manufactured, either to stay ...

Even though we were all expecting yesterday to be the Microsoft Surface Mini event, and where we also expected a Surface Pro 3 to be launched, it turned out to be a Surface Pro 3 event, and the Mini was no where to be found. We can't say we're disappointed with yesterday's event, as the Surface Pro 3 has done a great job in giving us some wow for the platform, but we can't deny that we weren't waiting for Microsoft's unique stab at what a smaller tablet should be, and actually that's the reason why no mini product was launched. According to some very trusted sources close to the manner, ...

Whether the Surface Mini is already late or not is completely up to you to decide. The report according to which there will be no Surface Mini announcement today comes from multiple "sources", so you can remain skeptical about it until we hear official wording from Microsoft. What exactly qualifies as a "remix?" How deluded do you have to be to believe in all these "Prime" rumors? Why are we so transfixed by the notion of lasers on smartphones, and so easily taken in by a smartphone commercial, if it's shot like a trailer for Inception? We tackle these questions, and the biggest announcement section in the history of the podcast, in episode 096 of the Pocketnow Weekly. No, that's not bragging – it's just an unavoidable symptom of a month packed with unboxings, hands-ons, product launches, and reviews (both forthcoming and already-published). But even in the ...

Even thought he Microsoft Surface hasn't been as popular as most of us feel it deserves to be, at least in its Pro model, it doesn't change the fact that Microsoft is still betting hard on it. With Stephen Elop's new leadership, a lot of us wonder what exactly does Redmond plan to do with its beloved tablet line-up. We do know that there is a Microsoft event next week, and we also know that there are rumors of a Surface mini launch, but it seems that it won't end there. In an internal support document, Microsoft has just spilled the beans on the probability that there is a Surface 3 in the ...

Rumors are swirling about a new device about to burst forth from the fertile loins of Redmond. A Surface Mini looks to be unveiled later this very month and it will bring Microsoft up to speed with all the form factors that are held by today’s tablet-toters. The only problem is, that Microsoft is kinda already up to speed in this arena, but it’s throwing another tablet into the mix anyway. The Surface Mini follows in the footsteps of other devices that carry the "Mini" tag, which is to say it will be a smaller, 8” inch version of it’s older and larger sibling. This is all fine and ...

A Surface Mini has been rumored for quite some time -- actually, since last year -- and according to recent reports, it might land, finally, this month. There will be a certain May 20 Microsoft event where the smaller slate is expected to make an appearance, and the inter webs are already trying to anticipate some of the features (or lack thereof). Bloomberg now weighs in on the topic citing unnamed sources that confirm the May 20 unveiling of the Surface Mini. Even more, the new product will likely ditch NVIDIA as a chip maker powering it; instead, the Surface Mini will be powered by ...
