Sony is neck deep in Lollipop updates right now, and when it's not seeding the latest Android builds for its flagship Xperia Z-series models, it's making a few available for lesser-ranked Xperia handsets. But really, it's the Z devices that are the stars of Sony's Lollipop show, and it's been working its way back through the family's history as it brings Lollipop to more and more phones and tablets. The first-gen Xperia Z is a solid two years old at this point, but it's still got Lollipop on the menu, and the only question has been when Sony would release the update. Now it looks like that ...

Last week we found ourselves looking at a story about Sony's business selling smartphone camera modules to the manufacturers of other handsets – and specifically, the degree to which Sony was making money from sales of the iPhone 6 and Galaxy S6. We touched on the subject again during the Pocketnow Weekly podcast, noting how Sony's emerged among other camera makers as the one you call out by name when you've got the company's cameras in your phone – beyond Apple and Sony, plenty of OEMs brag about their Sony cameras. But now a new report suggests that this success isn't coming without ...

Maybe it's because the company is forecasting a big drop in smartphone sales; maybe it's because it doesn't have a real 2015 flagship yet; or it could simply be because the Xperia Z4 is Japan-only (though it might reach other markets as the Xperia Z3+). Regardless of the reason behind it, Sony just posted a video to its YouTube page (embedded below), where it reminds you what the Xperia Z3 can do, that other flagships can't. They're, of course, referring to the fact that the Xperia Z3 is water and dustproof, so, if you're like the guy in the ad, and like to photograph raindrops, the Xperia ...

Sony is a brand recognizable the world around, and a company that makes some pretty attractive smartphones, but it sure seems to have the darnedest time making money selling them. In recent financial reports, Sony's blamed some of its losses on insufficient smartphone sales. This week the company's latest numbers are out, and the future for its phone business isn't looking a heck of a lot brighter. The good news, if you can see it as such, is that Sony's mobile device shipments have plateaued, not showing much growth or loss over the course of a year. And despite shipments staying put, ...

Sony was the first one to bring a huge, 20.7 megapixel camera to the Android world, and, for a short period of time, it was arguably the king of Android cameraphones, back in the Xperia Z1 days. Fast forward to today, through the Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z3, and Xperia Z3 Compact (now with the Xperia Z4 in Japan), and the megapixel count stayed the same, though Sony has improved its sensor, lenses, as well as its camera software. However, Xperia RAW image format is not available for Sony phones, despite the fact that the latest version of Android supports it. Asking about ...

There are a lot of Sony smartphone fans out there, but, sadly (for the company), not enough, or not as many as the Japanese manufacturer would have hoped. Regardless of its Xperia line-up (flagship or not), Sony didn't quite manage to sit at the same table with Apple or Samsung, for instance. However, Sony profits from Apple's and Samsung's smartphones, and, it profits even more when it comes to the latest iPhone 6 and Galaxy S6 flagships. Components inside the iPhone 6 or Samsung Galaxy S6 are made by Sony. We're referring to the image sensor. The iPhone 6 has not one, but two Sony ...

There were a lot of rumors and leaks leading up to the official unveiling of the Sony Xperia Z4, and, once the phone became official, we found out that it was bound to Japan. Then came rumors that Sony was working on a completely different phone for the rest of the world; how different is anyone's guess, but today we're seeing information that the Xperia Z4 might reach other markets as the Xperia Z3+. Manufacturers have been using "+" or "plus" versions of their devices to describe a slightly improved/better/larger model, regardless if we're talking Apple, HTC, or someone else, like Sony, ...

Sony's a brand with more history in consumer electronics than most other smartphone companies, but that head start hasn't translated into a top spot in the market. Instead, Sony's struggled to find its place, and that's meant making some tough decisions – such as not wasting a lot of time fighting in extremely competitive markets like the US. But just because it's choosing its battles doesn't mean that Sony's afraid of some healthy competition, and this month the company's talking about its plan to succeed in one of the most competitive markets around, with new exclusive smartphone ...

About three weeks back, T-Mobile appeared to drop the Sony Xperia Z3 from its retail lineup. The phone no longer appeared for purchase on the company's website, and inquiries with the carrier over social media were met with confirmation that “the Z3 is no longer available.” While it was a little odd to see sales being discontinues after just five months of availability, considering expectations of the pending Z4 launch, we were able to see where T-Mobile might have been coming from. Well, the Z4 is now official, but only for Japan. There's word that a global flagship could be coming in ...

A little under a month ago, back at the tail end of March, Sony offered some very important news about its Lollipop update plans. While earlier it had only affirmed its intent to make Lollipop available for the various phones and tablets making up the flagship Z-series of Xperia models, the situation was far less clear for other Xperia devices. At one point Sony was saying outright “no” to such updates, but it quickly backed away from that hard-line stance. And as we learned at the end of March, at least two non-Z models were very much in line for Lollipop: the Xperia T2 Ultra and ...

Sony's Xperia Z4 just went official, and now we're already turning our gaze outwards to what's next. Yesterday we took a look at some model numbers for unreleased Sony handsets, and while we weren't able to positively identify any, some inferences based on past Xperia device numbering suggested they could include a new Z Ultra-style phablet, maybe the international version of the Z4 itself, and we've even heard the suggestion that a Z4 Compact could be represented there. We're thinking more about that latter model this morning, as an apparent carrier leak seems to confirm Sony's plans for ...

Not much has changed over time when it comes to Sony's flagships, and their outer aspects. The Xperia Z3 looks a lot like the Xperia Z2 which looks a lot like the Xperia Z1, and the latest addition, the Japan-only Xperia Z4 is not much different either. If you were wondering how the two stack up, what the similarities and differences are (in terms of looks, cause we all know about the internals: better processor, better front-facer), check out these Sony Xperia Z4 vs Xperia Z3 pictures, coming from Japan. You can check out the details yourselves in the images below (and more at the source ...

Earlier this week, Sony dropped a bit of a surprise on us all, announcing the Xperia Z4 for Japan – a quiet press event, no international spectacle, just a new phone that isn't even confirmed yet for global release. It wasn't long after the Z4 went official that we started hearing a rumor about Sony's intentions for a proper worldwide flagship, though that could find us waiting until sometime next month. We're still not quite sure just how that phone might arrive, but a new finding today could offer a hint or two, as a handful of new Sony model numbers surface in Indonesia. It's that ...

Update: we've asked the question at the end of the post, and it looks like it's been answered. Apparently, the Xperia Z4 is only for Japan, but the rest of the world will get a different flagship by the end of May, according to this report. Finally all the rumors can come to an end as Sony announces the Xperia Z4, one of the most rumored (and leaked) smartphones of the year. It will replace (or at least it will try) the predecessor, the Xperia Z3, which was already an incremental upgrade to the Xperia Z2. If you were expecting a design overhaul, you'll probably be disappointed, as Sony has ...

Late last year, Sony Pictures Entertainment went and got itself hacked. What made that so interesting for us was that some leaked emails published in the hack's wake revealed internal marketing plans for the Xperia Z4, and correspondence about strategy and promotional tie-ins also revealed a few renders that sure looked like they could be the upcoming flagship. This week the hack's back in the news, as Wikileaks publishes a new trove of data stemming from it. And as luck would have it, this new release contains some additional smartphone renders. While these are being presented to us as ...

It's hard to remember the last time rumors became so confusing about a particular product, but the Sony Xperia Z4 takes the cake. First we heard that Sony was considering ditching the product name, and that all the leaks we saw were based on the Sony Xperia Z3 Neo, and then other leaks claim a more-powerful Sony Xperia Z5 being the company's next flagship. Today the name Xperia Z4 returns to the spotlight, and this time with some changes up its sleeve. First of all, it seems that this new Sony Xperia Z4 will bring some major design changes when compared to all of its predecessors. The ...

The past few hours have been busy ones for Sony rumors, as some new reports arrived that attempted to turn our current expectations on their head. One started looking past the Xperia Z4 -which Sony still hasn't launched- to the Z5, while the other took the position that we've been getting a little off-base with this whole Z4 business, and the phone that's actually featured in all those leaks and rumors has been one that will launch as the Z3 Neo. We're still not sure if there's any truth to that, but even if the specific device we've been talking about may be something else, there's little ...

Now that we've heard that all those Sony Xperia Z4 rumors might actually refer to a certain "Z3 Neo", we're not sure what to believe anymore. If you're not yet confused, let us help you with that, with the latest set of chatter that talks about a phone coming after the phone that should be coming soon. Yeah... Sony Xperia Z5 rumors are popping up, while we haven't even seen the Xperia Z4 yet (err, the Z3 Neo). Of course, there are several reasons to be extremely skeptical about these bits. Aside from being way too early, the information also comes from a source which has little to no track ...

Recent Sony leaks have led most of us to believe that we're seeing imagery and information about the company's next flagship – likely to be dubbed the Xperia Z4 – but we've been skeptical of some. New information from respected leaker ViziLeaks has us scratching our heads now, though. Could these leaks have been representing the Sony Xperia Z3 Neo the entire time? Could the Z4 still be way in the future? Confusion has ensued. The leaker tweeted the following out on Monday: By the way, none of the 'Z4 leaks' are Z4 leaks. Sony has different plans #sayhellotoZ3neo It's pretty ...

Even with all the rumors surrounding Sony's intention to sell its Xperia division, that hasn't pulled the company back from being one of the best at timely software updates. The company may have taken a little too long to update the Xperia Z3 a few weeks ago, but it seems that a broader plan behind the update was designed to compensate to other customers for the lost time. Today Sony has announced that users off the Xperia Z3 Dual, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact, and Xperia Z Ultra should receive Android Lollipop today. Those of you using the Xperia T2 Ultra and the Xperia C3 (both variants) ...

We won't even bother reminding you all the information we know about the unannounced Sony Xperia Z4 -- thanks to leaks, rumors, and all -- but we'll bring yesterday's leaked render to your attention in case you missed it. We know so much about this phone that 1. we feel it's been out for some time or 2. it's already suspicious, just in case Sony's playing with us all. The render you see above looks to be legit (or a pretty good fake). Not only it matches the render we've seen leaked yesterday, but it's higher quality. We do have one objection though, which could make us cry "fake": the ...

Some smartphones are able to make their way to market in the shadows, with little information about them going public before they see their formal launches. Others pop up in a rumor or two, maybe even starring in a super-blurry pic that gets leaked on social media. And then there are phones like the Sony Xperia Z4, where we spend more time looking at its dozens of pre-launch leaks than we spend with some phones over their entire lifespans. This week has already brought us a bunch of new shots of the Z4's hardware, and today we add a couple new entries to the ever-growing list, with the ...

We all remember last year's (thankfully behind us) "selfie" trends (with their respective "groufie", etc. derivates), and, remembering that, we can't help but remember Sony's Xperia C3, the selfie-centric phone with the five-megapixel front-facer with LED flash. It looks like the Japanese manufacturer hasn't given up on the concept, as a follow-up, the Xperia C4, is in the works, judging by the latest chatter. We've seen a render leaked yesterday, showing off a fairly similar design with an oversized camera on the front, and today, we're looking at what's claimed to be a real-life picture ...

The Sony Xperia Z4 is not official yet, but it already feels like we've known this phone for so long (and we're not referring to the slight improvements from the Z1 to the Z2 to the Z3, etc.). With all the rumors and leaks that are becoming a daily source of chatter and headlines, we can't help but wonder when is it exactly that Sony decides to finally make the phone official. A Sony Xperia Z4 camera sample has been allegedly leaked. A resized version can be seen below, while the full size of the image is available at the source link. According to the EXIF data, the shot has been taken ...

Being a Sony Xperia fan in the United States is not easy. Few carriers can be found throwing any support behind Sony's phones, and with a smartphone culture that's as carrier-centric as the nation's is, absence of such interest can easily prove to be a death knell for a new Xperia model. But last year with the release of the Sony Xperia Z3, there was a glimmer of hope, as T-Mobile welcomed the flagship to its stable. Just a few short months later, that's drawing to a close, as T-Mobile pulls the Z3 from its listings. With T-Mobile Z3 sales starting back at the tail end of October, that ...
