It's really tough to get me excited about a new smartwatch from Samsung. That's not necessarily because of the company's earlier efforts, : I stood up for the original Galaxy Gear and enjoyed it much more than did most of my fellow tech reviewers, and I even bought and used a Gear Fit for a short time, preferring its futuristic and lightweight build to the clunky first-gen Pebble I'd adopted a year before. Rather, my antipathy to new Samsung smartwatches stems from the fact that the company's first effort landed exactly one year ago, and we're already on iteration five. That's a ...

Between those new rumors about HTC wearables, and the surprise pre-IFA launches of the LG G Watch R and Samsung Gear S just the other day, we've totally got smartwatches on the brain. We've also been thinking a lot about Apple's plans for its next product launches, especially with that invite for a September 9 event going out yesterday; would the iWatch be featured? We heard a rumor just the other day specifically saying that this would be a dual iPhone/iWatch event, but now we're doubting just how useful that iWatch announcement might be, as we get word that sales of the smartwatch might ...

Samsung, Sony, LG, ASUS, Motorola: a growing number of the big smartphone OEMs – or at least those with a toe in the Android pool – have been getting involved with smartwatches. But there's one name almost conspicuously absent from that list; where's HTC? We've known for a while now that the company has been open to the idea of making a smartwatch, and rumors have long talked about a model arriving sometime this year. Back in May, there was even specific talk of a launch that could happen right around this time of the year, in late August or early September, as well as mention of an ...

Contrary to what many may think, smartwatches have been around for quite a long time. I'm not talking about the kind of wristwatch that includes barometers and moon phases and whatnot, rather, I'm referring to the kind that can connect to smartphone using Bluetooth (or a similar technology). These modern smartwatches (Pebble, Samsung Gear, and Android Wear) are taking much longer than I'd anticipated to really take off in the mainstream, and be adopted by the watch-wearing public. What we need a smartwatch killer app! When talking about computers and technology, according to Google's ...

With IFA just a week away, smartphone fans all across the world are gearing up for announcements of the latest hardware to hit platforms like Android and Windows Phone. But then there's also the contingent of Apple users out there, and while they don't have much to look forward to from IFA, they've got plenty to anticipate over the next few months as we expect to get word of new iPhones, iPads, and maybe even iWatches. So far, though, we haven't been able to nail down just when Apple planned to reveal any of this new gear. Today, our answer arrives, as the company distributes invitations ...

Samsung came out of left field today with the announcement of the Samsung Gear S earlier today, and as it turns out, this 3G-capable wristwatch actually packs some punches under the hood. What exactly are those, you ask? Let's find out in our Samsung Gear S specs list. One of the best parts (if not the best part) is the fact that the Gear S offers 3G connectivity alongside standard smartwatch features. While the specs may scream "NORMAL" to you for the most part, a big selling point is likely going to be the on-the-go internet connectivity not requiring a smartphone companion device. ...

Smartwatches are promising to be some of the real spotlight-stealers at IFA next week, where models like a new curved-display, cellular-connected Gear from Samsung, and that round-faced LG G Watch R are expected. Last week, we saw ASUS start dropping hints that it, too, was preparing to introduce a smartwatch at IFA, one rumors had previously suggested could be the lowest-priced Android Wear model to date, by a wide margin. The company followed that up with some additional teasers, revealing design sketches, and now it's back with a short video and a name for this smartwatch: the ASUS ...

This past weekend, LG surprised us with a new IFA 2014 teaser, revealing its round-faced wearable, the G Watch R. With Motorola's Moto 360 yet to go up for sale, LG threatened to swoop in and steal some of the 360's buzz, not only by making a circular smartwatch itself, but also by seemingly achieving a fully-round display, rather than the very-nearly-there 360 with its little dead space at the bottom. But while this G Watch R is very much happening, we haven't had a great look at the hardware just yet – the first teaser video just offered blips and flashes of a render. LG continues to ...

Even though the smartwatch has gone off to a slow start, that doesn't mean that there isn't a lot of promise in this market. With devices like the Moto 360 and the LG G Watch R in the pipeline, it's clear that we're just scratching the surface when it comes to design and features, though these are not the only devices to look forward to later this year. ASUS has spent the last couple of weeks teasing what we can expect from the company at IFA 2014. Among the devices we've seen featured, the hottest one is the company's smartwatch offering, and today we find another teaser about it. The ...

What makes you choose one wearable over another? Phone compatibility? Price? Hardware design? Just like with smartphones themselves, there are a ton of criteria to keep in mind, and these being smart devices we're talking about, not the least of those is the variety of software the wearable is able to run. Some platforms are approaching the issue of apps from the phone side, like how Android Wear doesn't really offer apps that exist independently of your Android handset. Others, like Pebble, are more inclined to deliver apps that stand by themselves. Samsung's a little closer to the latter ...

Motorola's got one. LG's getting one. And at the pace things are going, if you want to be a competitive smartwatch manufacturer, that's going to mean adding a model with a circular face to your offerings. We've already heard that Samsung may be looking to spice up its smartwatch lineup with a new Gear model featuring a highly curved display, but now we get word that a circular model could be arriving to join it before the end of the year. We've talked about round Samsung smartwatches before, having spotted the company's work towards patenting such designs (above), but we haven't had any ...

Samsung has been pumping out smartwatches at a feverish pace, and in the past year alone we've seen the release of the Galaxy Gear, Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo, Gear Fit, and most recently the Gear Live. We're coming up on the one-year anniversary of the inaugural Galaxy Gear's launch, and with Samsung's IFA 2014 Unpacked event scheduled for less than two weeks from now, will we see the debut of a new wearable? That's sounding like a distinct possibility, as we hear about Samsung's work towards a possible Gear 3. The first big change from the Gear 2, at least according to our source familiar with ...

ASUS has been talking about releasing a smartwatch for a while now, and this past spring the company's CEO offered Q3 2014 as a likely launch window. Rumors have since suggested that this would be an Android Wear device, and one that would stand out from the pack both by means of an extremely low price tag, as well as a noticeably slim build. The other day brought us notice that ASUS is hosting an IFA 2014 press event; might this smartwatch make an appearance? We're leaning very strongly towards “yes” after seeing the teaser the company distributed on social media early this morning. ...

Palm's webOS – at least the webOS we knew and loved - is dead. Sure, LG's picked up the platform for use in its smart TVs, and aspects the OS have lived on as they inspired devs working on current mobile platforms, but we're never going to see another Pre, Veer, or Pixi. But while webOS itself may be fading into the background, the minds behind it continue to contribute to this industry, and we just got word of a couple big webOS names finding a new home with a smartwatch manufacturer, with Pebble hiring both Itai Vonshak and Liron Damir. Vonshak and Damir both moved to LG after HP ...

LG introduced the world to its Android Wear-powered G Watch back in March, right around the same time the platform itself and Motorola's Moto 360 debuted. In the months that have followed, the G Watch has gone up for sale (joined by Samsung and its Gear Live), while we anxiously await for the 360 to join it. But now that Motorola's offering seems to nearly be ready for release, LG could already be thinking about a second-gen Android Wear model, as rumors suggest that the company could introduce a G Watch 2 at IFA next month. The idea of a little over five months between G Watch launches ...
