Last week's Apple event may have brought plenty of news about the company's latest mobile devices, but for users who are still holding on to older hardware a little longer, the most important announcement concerned Apple's release plans for its next-gen system software. This afternoon, users all over the world will start getting access to iOS 9 for their iPhones and iPads, right on schedule (Update: It's out). But not everything's going exactly as the company hoped, and an unexpected bug is proving to cause big problems for the release of watchOS 2, which will no longer arrive today as ...

Apple's getting this big event started on the wearable front, spending some time talking about what's next for the Apple Watch. After a brief look at improving software capabilities, we're onto hardware, with announcements of new bands, new Watch colors, and a partnership with luxury brand Hermes. To start, one of the major changes is that the Apple Watch Sport is getting new gold and rose gold finishes. Just like the Space Grey Apple Watch Sport, these are also anodized aluminum, through and through, but giving users the choice to try out additional colors at the same price range of the ...

IFA 2015 has come and gone, and now members of the press are making their way home from Berlin, Germany, including our own Hayato Huseman and Michael Fisher. We've been bringing you as much content as possible to give you an idea of what IFA had in store this year, and what new gadgets you'll have to look forward to in the coming months ... but what were some of the best mobile-related devices we saw there? Some of the best product categories? The best experiences? What was the best of IFA 2015? Smartwatches Ask anybody that attended; this year's IFA was all about wearables. So much so, ...

Last week brought us no shortage of new hardware, as we got started on what promises to be a month full of some of the most anticipated launches of the year. And while that meant a nice assortment of compelling new smartwatches, few have been able to demand level of interest we've seen surrounding Motorola and its second-gen Moto 360. We brought you an early hands-on account of the wearable right when it was first announced, but in the time since we've had a chance to go back and give the new smartwatch a second look, this time comparing the updated wearable to the original 2014 model. ...

The new Alcatel Onetouch Go Play phone just went official, and while it may not offer the same sort of design flexibility as Motorola provides through its Moto Maker, the eight color options sure give users plenty of variety. That same sort of colorful selection also turns up in the company's other new Go-series gadget launching tonight, as Alcatel Onetouch introduces the cross-platform Go Play smartwatch. Supporting both Android and iOS devices, the Go Play watch may sound a bit more like a notifier than a more full-fledged smartwatch like an Android Wear device (the Go Play runs ...

Why do we go to shows like IFA? The obvious answer is to see new products as they're launched, bringing you hands-on coverage from the moment new hardware debuts. We also sometimes get preview of upcoming models, like that Samsung Galaxy View that's got us wondering if kickstands are about to make a comeback. But in addition to those, expos like IFA also give us the chance to take a closer look at devices that have already launched, but we just haven't had the chance to spend much time with yet. At IFA this year, that meant getting to know the ASUS ZenWatch 2. ASUS introduced the ZenWatch ...

The original Gear S, which we reviewed late last year, was a hulking brute of a bracelet. For its sequel, Samsung sticks to the basics –Tizen OS, wristbound chassis– but almost everything else has been rebuilt, repackaged, or repainted into one of the most attractive wearables of IFA 2015. The company gave us a sneak peek into the new smartwatch here in Berlin, so join us for a quick look in our Samsung Gear S2 hands on! Samsung Gear S2 hands on [gallery columns="4" link="file" ids="446250,446251,446252,446253,446254,446255,446256,446257"]   Samsung actually announced two versions ...

Are smartwatches getting more expensive? Call it a side effect of more polished designs, higher-end hardware, or even just the realization that consumers will actually pay these loftier sums, but whatever the cause, while we once saw a good number of wearables launching in the $200 price range, with more recent crops of smartwatches, manufacturers seem to have no qualms about asking for $300, $400, $500, and up. Maybe we're just getting distracted by a few particularly pricey options, but it sure feels like we're seeing a gently upwards trend with pricing. At least, that's what we're ...

Motorola's new Moto 360 is official, and with multiple size options, as well as men's and women's designs, the smartwatch offers a lot more variety than last year's model. But coming into this launch we were expecting at least one more option from Motorola, and while not all the details are available just yet, the company has gone ahead with drawing the curtain back on the rugged-looking Moto 360 Sport. In addition to the features users can expect from the standard new Moto 360, the 360 Sport makes a few key changes. One is the addition of a GPS receiver, allowing users to track runs or ...

We've been following so many leaks and rumors about Motorola's plans for its second-gen Moto 360 smartwatch that it's been easy to start accepting all of them on face value ... including one from just the other day that pointed to a possible September 8 launch. As it turns out, we won't have to wait nearly so long, and this afternoon, as part of a string of new Lenovo announcements, Motorola has formally announced the new Moto 360. It was pretty clear coming into this that we were looking at a nice variety of new hardware options, first as leaks pointed to a pair of large and small size ...

To hear the latest rumors, we could be just a few weeks away from the debut of a brand-new LG smartwatch, but right now we're at IFA in Berlin, and that means getting the chance to check out LG's latest model, the just-announced Watch Urbane Luxe. While inside you won't find much different from last year's G Watch R, the Watch Urbane Luxe is all about making its exterior as premium-looking and pleasing on the eyes as possible. That means covering the smartwatch in 23K gold, a move LG says allows its wearable to be more durable than a pure 24K gold watch could hope to be. Sure, at $1200 the ...

Last week we were all ready to welcome the Huawei Watch to the world of retail availability, as Amazon appeared to open pre-orders for the smartwatch we've been waiting for since MWC. And while everything looked fine at first, it wasn't long before Amazon's listing was pulled and Huawei issued a statement about “incorrect information” getting out. OK, but what was wrong with Amazon's info, what might have been right, and when would Huawei set us straight. Well, today at IFA Huawei found time to formally announce the start of Huawei Watch pre-orders, setting us straight about all those ...

In addition to the modern connotations ranging from "intelligent" to "geeky," the word smart used to be synonymous with "classy," "elegant," and "timeless" – witness the enduring term "smart casual" for sharp-looking business attire. But today, the term "smart watch" conjures images of early adopters at best and technology nerds at worst. That's how Huawei sees it, anyway, and its first Android Wear device looks to turn back the clock on "smart," restoring the word –and the category– to a more dignified status. Does the Huawei Watch have what it takes to de-geekify Android ...

Coming up to IFA this year we heard that smartwatches were going to be huge, and from the launches we've already seen, that very much appears to be the case. Beyond those that have already gone official, we've got models like the new Moto 360 to look forward to in the very near future (even if that means missing IFA proper). LG already brought us the blinged-out LG Watch Urbane Luxe earlier this week, but we hear that its new-smartwatch ambitions may not be over just yet, as a new report tackles the hardware we might hope to expect from yet another LG smartwatch, one set to launch as soon ...

The launch of the new Moto 360 appears to be just within reach, but from the myriad ways the smartwatch has managed to already leak, revealing not only two watch sizes but also a ruggedized 360 Sport option, in some ways it may as well have already gone official. From what we've already seen, the new Moto 360 doesn't appear to be a huge departure from last year's design, and a lot of the wearable's iconic styling makes a return. That means not only another circular display (this is a smartwatch called the “360,” after all), but also the same bottom-clipped “flat tire” look that so ...

Last Friday, we saw Amazon list the Huawei Watch for pre-order, only for the page to subsequently be taken down. Huawei released a statement mentioning “incorrect information” on “a partner website,” but didn't go into much detail. We're still waiting for the full story on that smartwatch's release, but at least one related mystery has just managed to resolve itself. You see, while that listing was still up, it mentioned iOS compatibility for the Huawei Watch, despite this being an Android Wear model. We wondered at the time just what was meant by that, and today we seem to have ...

Not only does Motorola appear nearly ready to introduce its next generation of the Moto 360 smartwatch, but we've already had the opportunity to check this guy out multiple times, thanks to a bevy of useful leaks. Those have revealed to us at least two distinct versions of the new wearable, as the new Moto 360 looks like it's about to pick up a choice of size options, arriving in both a small and large edition. Is that the extent of the selections of models we'll have available? Back in late July, we came across some of the first reliable evidence for the new Moto 360 in the form of some ...

Motorola looks practically guaranteed to introduce its second-gen Moto 360 smartwatch at IFA next week. Leaks have been running wild in recent weeks, with a growing body of evidence pointing towards the imminent arrival of this new model, finally available in both large and small sizes. And while Motorola itself has yet to confirm that a new Moto 360 is about to drop, that's the easy inference to draw as we see the company halt sales of the first-gen Moto 360 through its website. Head to the general Motorola website, and the “wearables” tab up top no longer directs you to the Moto 360 ...

We're coming up on it being half a year now since Huawei first revealed its Huawei Watch smartwatch at MWC, and so far, shoppers have yet to be able to buy the wearable. Earlier this month, though, it finally looked like Huawei was ready to get the retail phase of the Huawei Watch started, posting a new webpage promising that the smartwatch was “right round the corner,” and today we finally see some motion to that end, as pre-orders for the wearable open on Amazon. Amazon, accepting pre-orders now, and indicates that shipments of the Huawei Watch will commence on September 2. We've ...

Rumors about a new Motorola smartwatch have been heating up for about a month or so now, suggesting that the company's nearly ready to announce it second-gen Moto 360. We've seen evidence from official sources, heard that Motorola could be planning an IFA 2015 launch, and even had the opportunity to look at some in-the-wild pics that seemed to reveal the wearable undergoing some last-minute testing. Today we add to that collection of images of actual hardware with a new shot comparing this year's Moto 360 to last year's model, and appearing to confirm the existence of a new, smaller size ...

Samsung plans to formally introduce its Gear S2 smartwatch – the company's first with a circular display – at the IFA trade show early next month. At least, that will be the wearable's official launch, but Samsung's not been shy about giving us a few chances to score an early look at the watch, first at its Note 5 Unpacked event the other week, and in a few official promo images that have emerged since. As we look forward to the grand IFA unveiling, Samsung's got something new for us along that same line, as a company exec shares another pre-launch Gear S2 pic, this time on Instagram. ...

Motorola is almost certainly about to introduce a new Moto 360 smartwatch, a model we've already seen pop up in leaks, featured in regulatory paperwork, and even spotted out in the real world. But for as imminent as the new wearable feels, there are still a good number of details we've yet to see fleshed out for the smartwatch, including the the full picture on size options and retail pricing. It may take us until Motorola's official launch announcement to see all our questions answered, but this week we get an early inkling of what we might expect, as one retailer publishes pre-order ...

One of the most visible ways we see mobile electronics mature over time is how relative screen sizes grow, and non-screen components shrink, until these gadgets are utterly dominated by their displays; just compare an old phone like the Nokia 3310, all keyboard and speaker (with just a tiny screen), to a modern handset like the LG G4, with a screen that nearly fills the phone's face. We're already seeing signs of the same evolution happening with smartwatches, as early models like the original, chunky Pebble give way to screen-dominated models like Samsung's Gear S2. But some manufacturers ...

Samsung hasn’t shied away from building buzz around its next-gen Tizen smartwatch the old fashioned way, previewing the circular Gear S2 at the latest smartphone-dedicated Unpacked event and then outright showing off the timepiece in a teaser video. What the South Korean device manufacturer didn’t reveal was the Gear S2 is likely headed to market in a “Classic” variation, as well. The name Gear S2 Classic popped up in source code on Samsung’s very own website, but unfortunately, we’re left guessing about the differences between it and the standard Gear S2. This could well be a ...

The LG G Watch and the Moto 360 caught my eye when Google introduced Android Wear. The G Watch beat Motorola to market, I bought it so I could go hands on with the new platform and the new OS. I didn't mind the squarish face, but I was really enamored with the round face of Motorola's watch - despite the "flat-tire" that so many complain about. As soon as the Moto 360 was available, I bought it. To this day, I haven't regretted the choice. The flat-tire doesn't even bother me like I thought it would (it's there to house the ambient light sensor, just in case you didn't know). There are, ...
