Sony surprised us all at IFA 2014 this year when it announced its SmartWatch 3. Well, we had heard that the product was gearing up to make its debut, sure enough, but rumors suggested that Sony would pull a Samsung with the SW3 and that its smartwatch would continue to run a proprietary platform, rather than the cross-device Android Wear. That ultimately turned out not to be the case, with the SW3 confirmed as a full-on Wear product. Since then we haven't had much cause to talk about the SmartWatch 3, which has quietly gone up for sale at Verizon in the interim. But now Sony's wearable has ...

One of the biggest differences between Android proper and the version of the OS meant specifically for wearables is the fact that no OEM skins are allowed – this means that updates, once released by Google, can immediately start hitting devices from an assortment of manufacturers. That's exactly what's happened today, with the Android 4.4W.2 update hitting Android Wear devices with a bunch of new features and bug fixes. The rollout began earlier today, with the LG G Watch and G Watch R (unreleased, save for the few review units out in the wild) seeing the update first. The update, build ...

For the bloggers that cover them, one of the greatest things about trade shows is the opportunity to connect with counterparts from other publications ... and to podcast with them. Sometimes the best salve for a salvo of comparison videos shot back-to-back over 13 hours is a few minutes in front of the mic with friends, picking up the pieces while picking out the messages, trends, and lessons from the show. Helping us do that on today's Pocketnow Weekly podcast are two luminaries of the mobile tech world, both of whom have been on our guest "wish list" for over a year. Fresh from ...

So far this year, the rumor mill has been pretty good at predicting what to expect from IFA announcements. Sure, a few details have been off here and there, and we ended up getting the Note Edge after not really being sure what to expect, but most of the launches we'd be tracking ended up going pretty much as anticipated. We did get at least one big surprise at the Sony event, though, as the company launched its latest wearable: while we heard that its SmartWatch 3 wouldn't join the growing contingent of Android Wear models, today's announcement confirmed the opposite, as the SmartWatch 3 ...

Sony is one of the known pioneers of the smartwatch market, so much so, that the brand "SmartWatch" belongs to the company. We wish we could say this legacy would amount to positive results in wearable sales after two SmartWatch attempts, but the truth has been a different story for Sony over the last couple of years. The good thing is that the company is not giving up, and today's IFA press event has seen the launch of the two new Sony wearables that were rumored. The Sony SmartWatch 3 is the company's first Android Wear product, as the company steps away from its proprietary Android ...

Though it tends not to get the most media attention at IFA – Samsung has been stealing that spot for a bit now with its glamorous unveils – Sony almost always has quite a lot of things to show off at the Berlin trade show. This year is no exception, and the count for what the OEM plans to announce currently stands at seven mobile-related devices. That's quite a lot, so we were quite eager to get all the info in one place. So we went ahead and created a full rumor roundup for Sony's IFA 2014 announcements. Xperia Z3 Without a doubt the most anticipated product of this year's IFA is the ...

Sony looks to be preparing for a blockbuster IFA event this year, with reported plans for the Xperia Z3, the Xperia Z3 Compact, the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, and a new smartwatch – and that's just on the mobile side of things. Now we're hearing more confirmation of the latter two, as both the Sony tablet and smartwatch have allegedly been caught in a leaked promo pic. The picture shows off the tablet, which is expected to have an 8-inch size (a first for this Sony line of tablets), along with a new smartwatch. They are both shown near what appears to be a pool, so it's quite possible ...

What company comes to mind when you're thinking “smartwatch innovator?” Pebble? Samsung? They may be a couple of the highest-profile players, sure, but it's easy to forget about some of the smartphone makers who tried dipping their toe in this pool even earlier – companies like Motorola with its MOTOACTV in 2011, or Sony (then Sony Ericsson) with its LiveView all the way back in 2010. Since then, Sony's released some updated models, including last year's SmartWatch 2 (above). The wearables market has grown by leaps and bounds since last summer, and now we hear that Sony could nearly ...
