The last half-a-year has been a very uncertain time for users of webOS devices. Optimism for the Pre 3 was quickly derailed by HP's announcement of its intent to cease further production of webOS hardware. That started-off a very tense time for users who had invested in the platform, but as the year wrapped-up, we learned of HP's plans to make the platform open source, giving us hope that there may still be life for it, yet. Throughout all of this, HP has tried to stand-by its existing user base and show what support it could through the release of system updates. We heard a little about ...

$1.2 billion was the amount HP spent on acquiring Palm, together with webOS, back in April 2010 and allegedly it's the same amount the company asked for when it tried to sell before killing webOS and turning it open source. According to Paul Mercer, former senior director of software at Palm, there was little hope for webOS from the very beginning. "Palm was ahead of its time in trying to build a phone software platform using Web technology, and we just weren't able to execute such an ambitious and breakthrough design", he added, before saying that "perhaps it never could have been ...

Today's news from HP marks what looks like the end of an era, with the company deciding to throw in the towel on webOS-based smartphones. The platform has only been around for about a couple years, starting with rumors of something called "Nova" that Palm was working on. We got a proper name for the project with Palm announcing webOS and the Palm Pre at CES 2009. By summer, Palm had launched the original Pre QWERTY slider. The Pixi gave users an option with a non-slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Early 2010 brought news of upgrades to the Palm and Pixi, both getting Plus designations as part of a ...

Users of unlocked HP/Palm Pre 2 smartphones already received their share of webOS 2.1 at the beginning of March but those that are currently Verizon subscribers sporting the Pre 2 smartphone are just getting the refresh being pushed out to their devices. The 2.1 version of webOS to hit Verizon Pre 2 smartphones brings Exhibition (turning the Pre 2 into a clock, photo frame or agenda while docked), voice dial, support for Bluetooth keyboards, E-mail fixes, Backup changes, Security fixes and more. Check with the Updates app to see if the refresh is ready for your particular smartphone. For a ...

We know that webOS users wanted to be able to do some editing for the documents up on Google Docs right from the web without any other applications involved and it looks like your prayers have been answered! If you are running an HP Palm smartphone with really any version of webOS -- webOS 1.4.5 confirmed -- you are now able to do the editing online, on the web, for both documents and spreadsheets. You might see some missing features (cloud printing) or some features not working as they should but the glitches will hopefully be ironed out soon. You still need to get passed the typical ...

Following the release of webOS 2.1.0 for the Palm Pre 2 a few weeks ago, Palm has now expanded their update rollout to include unlocked Pre 2 devices. The update is being pushed out over-the-air and notifies the user via a message from Palm services. The update adds two major features to the OS: Exhibition Mode and Voice Dial. Exhibition mode works with the Touchstone charging accessory, keeping the display on while "docked" to the wireless charging pad. The time, photos, and agenda apps are currently supported. Exhibition mode also allows you to search the app catalog for more compatible ...

A hardware hack brought to us by the WebOS Internals team brings the Palm Pre 2 and Pre Plus to Sprint complete with webOS 2.0.1. A comm board is required from a Palm Pre device, and at the completion of the hack you have a fully functioning Sprint Palm Pre 2. The hack requires dismantling of the Palm Pre via removing 6 Torx T5 screws, a series of plastic clips, detaching some ribbon cables, and separating the device into several pieces. The comm board is removed from the donor device (the Palm Pre) and placed into the recipient device (Palm Pre 2 or Pre Plus), which must also be ...

Got some bad news from HP's webOS update tool? Not looking forward to a long wait for webOS 2.0? Right on schedule, Verizon's bringing the Pre 2 to its network, with HP now accepting pre-orders for the smartphone. We had previously learned that the Pre 2 would be released on Verizon on February 17, which has now been confirmed as when pre-ordered phones will ship. The $100 on-contract price tag also checks out with earlier leaks. The coolest part of Verizon's offer is the inclusion of its Mobile Hotspot feature for no additional charge. Normally, you'd have to fork over another $40 each ...

Verizon sure has been taking its good, sweet time in bringing HP's Palm Pre 2 to its customers in the US. Europe's had the phone since November, and Canadian users have been able to pick one up since December. Sure, if you were in the US and itching for a Pre 2 you could buy an unlocked model for $450, but most people interested in the smartphone have probably been waiting for a subsidized deal to come along. After several false starts, like the phone showing up in Walmart's inventory system, Verizon is finally set to start carrying the Pre 2 tomorrow, February 10, a little earlier than ...

Verizon hasn't exactly been the quickest in getting the Palm Pre 2 to market, but now a release date may finally be in sight: according to screenshots published by Engadget and Pre|Central, a third-party retailer is said to start selling the handset on February 17th for $100 on contract. However with HP Palm throwing a hardware launch on the 9th that very well may reveal upcoming smartphones along with the known tablet(S), we're not sure how many people will be interested in what might be deemed last-generation hardware by the time it hits shelves. The 1GHz Pre 2 is already available ...

Like animals heading for high ground before a flood, when we start to see whole flocks of smartphones disappear, it's a good bet that something big is coming. Apple's well known for depleting its stocks of certain hardware in advance of a new release, but this time it's Verizon with the vanishing gadgets. Check out Verizon's website today, and you won't see any Palm models listed along with currently-available smartphones. The obvious guess is that Verizon's move has something to do with the webOS event HP has been promising for February 9. If HP was going to use that opportunity to talk ...

Verizon still has yet to make the Pre 2 official, though at this point we're expecting news of it any day. Alas, there might be a twist in this story. Some readers from PreCentral have done some URL hacking to come up with a page that shows what seems to be the Palm Pre Plus (no longer available on Verizon) with references to "Palm LTE Voice". The page also features the little "LTE 4G" Verizon logo. Could this be a sign of an upcoming WebOS handset to land on Verizon with 4G capability? That'd sure be a great way to rejuvinize the WebOS platform. Perhaps we'll find out more about this at ...

Well, well, look what we have here: the Palm Pre 2 for Verizon on Walmart.com. As if we had any remaining doubts that the latest WebOS smartphone would show up on Verizon, this latest appearance tells us that we're super close to the Verizon release--as in, any day now. The WebOS 2.0 device packs a significantly faster CPU and more RAM than the Palm Pre Plus of last year, plus features a modest redesign in terms of hardware. Source: Walmart.com

Palm's kicked off the second generation of webOS devices with the Pre 2, but you wouldn't know it if you live in the US. Despite international launches, the only way to snag the Pre 2 in the States right now is directly from HP, unlocked, for full price. It's possible the tide is beginning to turn, as the phone now shows up in Best Buy's systems. The data we can gleam from the leaked Best Buy inventory page doesn't offer much of an insight into exaclty when the Pre 2 will see some wider distribution. Though just being in the that database is a good sign, the price is still the full ...

Palm Pre 2 owners may have the latest webOS 2.0 to play with, but what about other Palm owners? The company has been claiming that older devices like the Pre, Pixi, and their Plus versions, would eventually get an OS upgrade, but the software has yet to materialize. Fret not, as Palm is still working on it, as shown in some leaked pics of webOS 2.0 on the original Palm Pre. It's good that Palm is still developing the beta, rather than rushing out a release, as according to the tipster who released this information, webOS 2.0 on the Pre is "not fast enough". While the Pre 2 is capable of ...
