Stuff comes up, folks. Sometimes you've got a pressing appointment in Romania, or a meeting scheduled in Media, PA. Sometimes you're at the day job, other times you're off the grid somewhere in the country. Other times you're buying a car. These things happen. Fortunately for us, these things don't usually happen all at once, which means the Pocketnow Weekly podcast usually features more than two people on the air. But today, listeners, Lady Luck was not with us. Today, Sam the Scheduler was out sick, because every member of the Pocketnow team was otherwise engaged when it came time to ...

Google's been planning to give the Play Store an overhaul for a while now. No, we're not talking about all those apps the company recently removed – over the past few weeks, there have been a number of leaks showing off a redesigned look for the Play Store app, with the most recent glimpses arriving just a couple days ago. If things looked nearly ready to go, that's because they were, and today Google announced the new, improved Play Store. The whole idea is to simplify things, with clean, sparse text and large images to capture your attention. Google says that it's also made changes to ...

When we're talking about a company turning a strict eye to the quality of apps it allows on its platform's store, it sure seems like we're usually discussing Apple, notorious for the heavy-handed oversight it wields over App Store submissions. Today, however, Google's the one that appears to be cleaning house, as reports arrive that something like 60,000 low-quality apps were removed from the Play Store over the course of February. Google hasn't officially announced any such total, and instead the number's been computed by a company doing its own app store analytics. That also means that ...

It seems that every time we talk about Google, the Play Store, and accessories for Nexus-series hardware, we're talking about stuff showing up late. It happened with the Galaxy Nexus, we didn't see the Nexus 7's dock arrive until eight months after its launch, and it's happening again with the Nexus 4. Google may have introduced the phone last fall, but only now are some pretty basic accessories finally becoming available for sale. Google just added a handful of official Nexus 4 accessories to its Play Store offerings, and probably the most interesting (though still not very) is a wired ...

Google's been quietly putting in some work lately to bring down some of the barriers between developers and the users who buy their apps. Last fall we saw the company start pushing users towards posting reviews under their real names, hopefully leading to some more honest, useful feedback. Then back in January Google started letting devs respond to critiques, posting follow-up comments. The latest improvement along these lines is one you won't be able to see so easily on the surface, but could still go a long way towards keeping developers productively engaged with their user bases. As of ...

It's already Wednesday morning in Australia, and users there have revealed that Google Play is offering some serious discounts on apps, movies, and books in honor of one year with its new name. The Android interface has drastically changed over the last six years. Few of us care to recall the days of Gingerbread, where the operating system was accented with two contrasting colors – neon orange and green – and an uninspired interface. Dare we think back to FroYo and beyond, where the notification shade was an odd shade of light gray (slightly 0ff-white) and the app drawer was literally a drawer that had to be opened by a upward finger swipe. Matias Duarte, Google's Director of Android User Experience, has worked his magic with Android. Since he joined the ranks, the interface ...
