One week ago Monday, Pebble launched the 2.0 overhaul of its iOS app, introducing the Pebble app store. Getting access to those 1000-some apps and watchfaces was great for Apple users, but what about Android smartwatch fans? At the time, Pebble explained that it was fine-tuning the Android release, and that it expected to have it ready to go “very, very soon.” We were hoping that meant “a matter of days” and we'd be seeing the app launch by the end of the week, but that hasn't come to pass. Apparently cognizant of so many users waiting, today Pebble posted an update to its blog, ...

We first saw Pebble Steel at CES last month, and while many feel the upgrade over the original Pebble to be a disappointment, there is no denying how good looking the new Pebble is. It's internals and specs are practically the same as the original, except this model has double the internal storage. It bears the same display, battery, CPU, etc. But its frame is smaller, it weighs a little more, and it looks infinitely more classy. While we put this smartwatch to the test and determine if it's worth an additional $100, feast your eyes on the Pebble Steel unboxing video below, and tell us why ...

As I sit here writing this article, my Pebble smartwatch is on my wrist and my mind is racing back to my time with the Galaxy Gear -- and finally getting it to "work" with my Nexus 5. I love my Pebble. It's a watch that does so much more than a standard wristwatch, and helps keep my smartphone in my pocket, rather than in and out, over and over when I check notifications. Samsung's Galaxy Gear is a different breed of smartwatch. In addition to doing most of what Pebble does, it also serves as your phone's handset, lets you snap short videos, and more. Unfortunately, it's only "compatible" ...

I can't even begin to count the number of times I've been called a fanboy or how many times I've been told I was unwittingly paid by [insert manufacturer name here]. Seriously, if anyone knows the account number for the checking account holding the insurmountable back pay I never received for publicly plugging and recommending products (whilst also cutting others down to size), feel free to share. After all, I'm the fanboy who deserves it, right? Joking aside, I've never known a fanboy who willingly and openly carried the operating systems he allegedly hates. I carry an iPhone 5, Moto X, ...

We then talk about the HTC M8, and more confirmation that that phone is losing its hardware buttons. Sony is next as we get some leaks of an Xperia smartphone with very little bezels. Sundar Pichai takes the stage next as reports have him as a strong candidate for CEO at Microsoft. We end today's show talking about the predictions for hardware specifications for the Galaxy S 5 and iPhone 6. All this and more after the break. Stories: - Pebble app store launches for iOS; Android ...

We've known that a Pebble app store was in the works for a while now, and back at the CES the company shared its plans to have the service active by the end of January. Since then we've had the chance to go hands-on with a pre-release copy of the app store, and over the weekend Pebble teased the app store's launch for today – granted, missing that January schedule, but pretty close, all the same. Today we see the service go live, though not for every platform we were expecting. Despite tweeting an image of the Pebble app store for Android on Saturday, as of right now the service is only ...

The Pebble Steel wasn't the only news from the company that landed at CES 2014; as you've probably seen our hands-on video by now, an app store, called Pebble appstore, is just around the corner. It will finally put an end to endless searching through third party offerings for applications or watch faces. According to the latest tweets from Pebble, the appstore should be available sometime on Monday. Judging by the two screenshots posted, one from the iPhone, and one from an Android device, you should expect both versions of the client to be ready for you to grab on February 3. Then you ...

Love or hate them, smartwatches are a growing thing. Many of us here at Pocketnow have or will soon own a Pebble, and Michael Fisher also has a soft spot for the Galaxy Gear. And Joe and I share similar theories on the future of smartwatches, wearables, and the personal area network. But it's not just us those of us who are obsessed with technology either. As new generations of devices have come out and they become more visible to the general public, they have grown in popularity. For instance, while sitting in a coffee shop writing last week, I saw two random customers wearing Pebble. A ...

When you can kick off a tech podcast with a string of expletives taken right from your publication's teamwide chat records, you know it's been a crazy week in the news. The Lenovo Motorola deal, announced late yesterday afternoon, threw our whole week -and perhaps our whole world- into disarray, and we're grateful for the chance to sit down and talk it through on today's show. But the news doesn't stop there. Galaxy S 5 speculation is still coming fast and furious, with details like Samsung's rumored fingerprint scanner beginning to take shape; we're starting to catch wind of Nokia's plans ...

When talking with Pebble CEO Eric Migicovsky at CES, one thing he said stuck with me: Pebble's vision is not to replace smartphones, but to remain a peripheral. It's a controller or remote for your smartphone – nothing more, nothing less. The company prides itself in how simple and "out of the way" its wrist-mounted notification device is. Frankly, that's one of my favorite features of Pebble. I set it up and it just works, reliably … for days and days on a single charge. When I get a text message, Hangouts message, email, or social notification, Pebble buzzes and previews the ...

To many, the world's most notable smartwatch, Pebble, has been somewhat limited. Sure, third-party developers have flexed their creative muscles to try and squeeze as much functionality out of the wrist-mounted notification machine as possible. But until now, out of the box and officially, Pebble has done little more than deliver notifications to your wrist and tell time. Finding watchfaces and apps required perusing the Internet. There, you would find a handful of treasure troves. Installing these unofficial watchfaces and apps wasn't difficult, but it wasn't a smooth, polished experience ...

"Our revels now are ended, Kirk." That's a quote from Star Trek VI, paraphrasing a line from Shakespeare's The Tempest. In the latter instance (minus the "Kirk" bit) it's a conceit of sorts, an admission that the play is a falsehood - and an observation that so, perhaps, is life. In the former example it's a wisecrack from a Klingon bent on shooting our favorite captain's ship out from under him. In both cases, it's a kind of farewell. And in today's example, it's also a goodbye - to the old times. That's a pretty dramatic way of saying that we're finally, officially past the post-CES ...

Pebble is pretty limited in functionality … by design. The creators don't want it to become some all-in-one, smartphone replacement, but instead want it to remain a peripheral – a controller and status indicator for the smartphone in your pocket. Pebble is a means of keeping your phone in your pocket more while enjoying the world around you. With the official Pebble 2.0 update, which will ultimately bring Pebble's own appstore, the watch is lined up for some pretty big changes in the near future. But you don't have to wait! You can install the Pebble 2.0 BETA software right now (with a ...

If you’ve ever asked yourself why on earth you’d ever consider buying a smartwatch, trust me, you’re not alone. Just two months ago I felt the same way. Ever since the birth of many of the smart watches we’ve seen come and go from LG and Sony, I always felt that they looked like toys that didn’t serve a purpose. Yes, I did belong to the crowd of Casio Data Bank users back in the 90s, but as a teenager, that’s part of what was normal at that age. Today I’m already scratching my mid-30s, and I don’t know about you guys, but watches have become more of a fashion accessory for ...

Few will argue that wearables aren't the next big thing. Fitness trackers, smartwatches, and face-mounted displays were in full force at CES last week. And the term "wearables" is plastered all over every tech site on the Web. While not everyone quite understands the usefulness and importance of peripherals for smartphones with glanceable, easily accessible information, the attention the few important devices are getting in this brand new market is telling of just how ready we are for the next big thing. Several of us here at Pocketnow have been following the blossoming smartwatch market ...
