The built-in microphone of the Pebble Time, Time Steel, and Time Round smartwatches has been one of the trio’s most underused features since day one, especially when paired with iPhones. On iOS, you couldn’t even answer to text messages using your voice without pulling the iDevice from your pocket, an uncomfortable situation that’s about to change, at least for postpaid AT&T subscribers. Yes, our Ma Bell-loving readers and friends, you can now update your Pebble Time firmware and Time iPhone app to finally activate voice and text communication straight from your wrist. How does ...

Updated December 9: The Nexus 6 has been dropped from the Google Store. Step back from the food court, I repeat, step back from the food court. Move away from the deals. Seriously, though, you might be on a sales safari come this weekend or a cyber chase on Monday. If you're the type of person to give away phones and smartwatches for the holidays, though, it helps to actually consider what you're getting and how it fits the person you're getting it for. Like a sommelier does with wine, we're given you our suggestions on what phones to look for when you're talking about your dorky cousin ...

Did you know you could purchase Pebble smartwatches directly from the manufacturer? Probably not, seeing as how they’re everywhere, from Amazon to Best Buy to Target. But this week, you have all the reasons in the world to take your business to Pebble, not third-party retailers. As part of yet another early Black Friday sale offered by a tech company fearful it may not make many waves come November 27, the Pebble Time Steel is already marked down from a starting price of $250 to $200 and up. The relatively new rectangular wearable piece is encased in robust stainless steel, and can be ...

This week's proving to be a surprisingly busy one for fans of Pebble's cross-platform wearables, and following news of a nice discount on this year's Pebble Time smartwatch, and an update on availability of the timeline UI for first-gen models, it's finally time to check back in with Pebble's latest design, as we get word of the arrival of the Pebble Time Round. The Pebble Time Round, you may recall, launched back in late September as the manufacturer's first smartwatch with a circular screen. We knew that shipments were slated to start heading out to users pre-ordered sometime early this ...

Just how many Apple Watches are out there, on the wrists of early adopters? Possibly a tougher question to answer precisely than what Donald Trump’s wig is made of. But one thing is clear. Cupertino’s iPhone-compatible wearable isn’t the box-office lemon haters claim. Obviously, it’s not an iPhone 6s-like blockbuster either, yet at “nearly” 7 million unit shipments approximated by market research firm Canalys, it easily dwarfs all Android, Tizen and RTOS-powered rivals. As Fitbit recently indicated, smartwatches and lower-cost, lower-end fitness trackers cater to different ...

If you haven't tried a Pebble smartwatch just yet, the company’s looking to introduce you to the world of wearable tech with a nice discount on this year's color-screened Pebble Time, knocking $50 off the watch's price. And while that's a great offer, what if you're already rocking a Pebble smartwatch – and specifically, one of the older models? Pebble hasn't forgotten you, and a few months back during the warm days of summer the manufacturer promised that owners of the Pebble and Pebble Steel could look forward to a major update coming to their wearables before the end of the year, ...

With September's launch of the circular-screened Pebble Time Round, the rectangular Pebble Time is no officially no longer the same new hottness it was back when it debuted earlier this year as the company's first smartwatch with a color display. But that's fine, because not only does it mean that we have new round option to look forward to (which should start shipping any day now), but it's giving Pebble cause to start discounting its older hardware. Today the company's up to just that, giving the Pebble Time a 25 percent price cut. While the Pebble Time could be initially be yours for a ...

The Pebble Time and its later successors garnered some decent fame over the last few weeks. Surely Pebble isn't necessarily building the best looking round smartwatch, but we've got to hand it to the company for adding new features while sticking to most of its roots in this new line of smartwatches. Voice Dictation was one of those innovations, and today it gets an extra kick. As of today Pebble has announced that it is allowing third-party developers to add voice dictation to apps for the Pebble Time, Pebble Time Steel, and Pebble Time Round. This is a big deal as at the moment the ...

For the past few days now, Pebble's been counting down to an announcement, and the smart money seemed to be on this signaling the release of a big firmware update for first-gen Pebble watches. That would have made for some interesting news, sure, but what we got today has turned out to be a heck of a lot more compelling: Pebble has just drawn the curtain back on the Pebble Time Round, a super-thin smartwatch with a circular display. Pebble Time Round features a color display, just like the Pebble Time, and will be available with either 14mm or 20mm band options. Users can look forward to ...

Update: Now with more silicon than ever. Hey, do me a favor? Next time you go on down to the Piggly Wiggly, see if they've got them there tablet six packs? I won't have 'em all, I promise; I just want a couple for the road. Yep, things got a little craaaaaazy in mobile technology this week. In the midst of our comprehensive Moto X Pure Edition review and a boatload of hands-ons from CTIA in Las Vegas, we've seen Nextbit announce a cloud-based smartphone, Apple allow an ad blocker into the App Store, and Amazon release, yes, tablet six-packs. And on top of all that, we've got some ...

IFA 2015 was apparently, at least in Hayato Huseman's eyes, all about the wearables. We glimpsed into the Samsung Gear S2, the Huawei Watch, the second-generation Moto 360 and quite a few others. This comes after a rather tepid introduction period for Android Wear as a platform and terrific, but not quite analysts'-expectations-terrific sales for the Apple Watch. With all that said, the people at research firm IDC think that timidity to buying a smartwatch might just burn off. First of all, the growth in the general wearables market continues on with a forecast 76.1 million units to be ...

The last couple months have seen Pebble's next generation of smartwatches arrive bit by bit. First we saw the Pebble Time start going out to its crowdfunding backers, then later become available to shoppers at large; most recently, we've even started talking about brick-and-mortar retail sales. But that's only half of the new Pebble picture, and we've also been anxiously awaiting the new Pebble Time Steel. While that Pebble's been a little behind schedule, it's finally on its way out now – just not necessarily with its matching steel band (not yet, at least). And while that's great news ...

We've already seen what Pebble can do when it outfits its a smartwatch with a color display, and after launching this past winter, the Pebble Time finally arrived several weeks back. That's given us ample time to get to know the wearable, at least in one form; shortly after the original Pebble Time went public, we learned of a second model, the metallic Pebble Time Steel. And despite the Pebble Time's availability, we've still been waiting on the Pebble Time Steel's arrival. A couple weeks back we heard Pebble deliver assurances that its first shipments of the metal smartwatch would get ...

Pebble's latest smartwatch has been charming us for weeks now, as the color-screened Pebble Time took an already successful smartwatch and only managed to improve upon it. We've been busy checking out recent developments like the start of retail sales, as well as talking about some of our favorite customization options, and now we get word of Pebble's latest effort to fine-tune the Time user experience, upon the release of a new Pebble Time firmware and updated Android app. The new Pebble Time 3.2 firmware delivers a number of worthwhile changes and new options for the watch's settings, ...

Slowly but surely, Pebble's latest wearables have been becoming available to more and more shoppers. We're still in the Pebble Time phase of deployment – Pebble Time Steel will be on its way soon, though – and have been moving past initial shipments fulfilling crowding commitments to the first steps towards broader retail availability, with Best Buy accepting Pebble Time pre-orders. Today that path to retail sales reaches its inevitable conclusion, as Pebble shares word of the Pebble Time coming to Best Buy and Target stores. In addition to accepting orders online, both retailers will ...

The color-screened Pebble Time has been shipping out to its crowdfunding backers for several weeks now, and we've even seen general pre-orders open to the public at large. And while that edition of the smartwatch may be here, we're still waiting for its metallic cousin, the Pebble Time Steel. When Pebble announced the smartwatch back in the early days of March, it promised shipments would start going out sometime in July. With the month nearly half over, today Pebble's following things up with some new info about how and when Pebble Time Steel will finally become available. The good news ...

If you've been itching to get into the wearable space, you might find it hard to find out which devices are worth looking into. Smartwatches release less frequently than smartphones or tablets, and even when a new device launches, it just doesn't see the same type of hype and publicity. Wearables don't just include smartwatches though, and there's a certain VR kit that has every potential to be a home run — assuming it's properly marketed. Find out our top picks for the best wearables in early 2015! [embed width="780" height="439"]http://youtu.be/zEJQ3MeOIK0[/embed]

Ever since junior high school I've worn a smartwatch - whatever the definition of "smartwatch" was at the time. Whether it was a calculator watch with a calendar and contacts storage, or a watch with an altimeter, barometer, and moon phases, I tried to wear the latest tech on my wrist. Yeah, I'm a geek, but you already knew that. Most of those watches had plastic bands, but as I've gotten older I've gravitated to metal or leather bands. One of the first upgrades I performed on my LG G Watch was the installation of a black metal band. My Moto 360 came with an elegant leather band, but I ...

The Pebble Time is one of the hottest new smartwatches to hit the market, and though we've already reviewed it and compared it to Android Wear, reviews only get you so far. Sometimes using a product as a normal consumer goes beyond what specs it has or how it holds up against similar products. There are small things that we don't mention in our reviews, like the strong vibration feedback from the Pebble Time compared to other smartwatches, because they're minor enough that they don't necessarily affect the end user experience — but small changes are still worth noting somewhere, right? ...

The new color-screened Pebble Time has landed, and we've been spending the last few weeks covering the smartwatch's arrival. The original Pebble (and Pebble Steel) already offered users a lot of customization options with the help of alternate watchfaces, and the debut of the color display with this generation only opens the door for more variety. Beyond that, you can always swap out the band for another 22mm option. But if even that's not enough for you, and you crave further control over the way your smartwatch looks, dbrand may have just what you need, as it reveals its new modular ...

As fun as it can be to marginalize and criticize them, smartwatches are magical pieces of technology. From something as mainstream as an Apple Watch to something as fringe as a Cogito Classic, today’s wristborne wearables are modern miracles of miniaturized intelligence. As I say at the top of every Pocketnow Weekly podcast, these real-life tools are the manifestation of many childhood dreams, mine included … and it’s incredible to stop and think about just how complex they really are. All of which makes it doubly frustrating when these supposedly “smart” devices screw ...

Pebble has sort of been the father of all smartwatches. The origin. It was the first of its kind … but certainly not the last. Over the past year, give or take, we’ve watched the rapid growth of a new wearable platform, Google’s Android Wear, and with its rising popularity, the Pebble has begun to feel … dated. But now Pebble has released a new watch, the Pebble Time, and with it came a new interface — what the company is calling Timeline UI. It’s a nice refresh to the tired monochromatism of Pebble past, but Google also recently released an update to Android Wear, version ...

Updated to reflect revised Apple Watch sales estimates. (Thanks, SocialBrian!) I remember the moment I realized smartwatches had a chance at being the next big thing in mobile. It was the spring of 2012, I'd just spent a week with the original Pebble, and I suddenly found myself unable to live without it. It was 1999 all over again: I was a wristwatch-wearing man, and leaving the house without it prompted angry expletives and a day full of accidental glances at an empty wrist. Three years later, smartwatches have made the jump to the mainstream consciousness. No longer confined to the ...

One of the really cool things that I enjoy most about my Moto360 is the customizable watch faces I can create using a normal JPG upload and few customization options. I love this because I can really make the watch mine. It’s not worth the developmental hassle to make a custom watch face and code it for the Play Store and everything because at the end of the day, how many people are going to want a TekBeard watch face? Plenty more people would be interested in a Pocketnow watch face, but still, that’s a lot of coding for a very specific audience. When I got my Pebble Time, one of the ...

When we first learned that Pebble was returning to the crowdfunding route for the new color-screened Pebble Time, we weren't sure quite what to think. Wasn't crowdfunding more for upstarts, not companies that had already established themselves on the market? But just hours later, our concerns quickly evaporated as the funding total hit millions upon millions of dollars. That's great news for Pebble, but with the campaign now closed, what's a smartwatch fan who missed all that excitement to do? Well, a little under a month back we learned about the forthcoming start to general pre-orders ...
