Got some bad news from HP’s webOS update tool? Not looking forward to a long wait for webOS 2.0? Right on schedule, Verizon’s bringing the Pre 2 to its network, with HP now accepting pre-orders for the smartphone.
We had previously learned that the Pre 2 would be released on Verizon on February 17, which has now been confirmed as when pre-ordered phones will ship. The $100 on-contract price tag also checks out with earlier leaks.
The coolest part of Verizon’s offer is the inclusion of its Mobile Hotspot feature for no additional charge. Normally, [...]
The new direction HP is taking in regards to webOS 2.0 upgrades for existing webOS devices surely has lots of Palm users feeling confused and a bit betrayed. Yesterday, the potential for getting these updates suddenly changed from “all devices will get them sometime this year” to “don’t expect an easy OTA update, if we even come out with an update for your phone at all“. While HP said that it would work on some sort of plan to bring existing users along to a current webOS release, it still left a lot of ambiguities hanging. Now the company has put up a [...]
HP had plenty of news for its users today about upcoming hardware and expanded availability of recently-released devices, but what of the the original Pres, Pre Pluses, Pixies, and all? Users have been waiting patiently for a webOS upgrade to version 2.0 for these devices, with an early 2011 release seeming probable. That possibility is looking very unlikely now, as upgrades have clearly taken a back seat to the current roster of HP’s smartphones. The company revealed at today’s event that those phones will never get webOS 2.0 over-the-air, though tethered upgrades remain a [...]
Verizon sure has been taking its good, sweet time in bringing HP’s Palm Pre 2 to its customers in the US. Europe’s had the phone since November, and Canadian users have been able to pick one up since December. Sure, if you were in the US and itching for a Pre 2 you could buy an unlocked model for $450, but most people interested in the smartphone have probably been waiting for a subsidized deal to come along. After several false starts, like the phone showing up in Walmart’s inventory system, Verizon is finally set to start carrying the Pre 2 tomorrow, February 10, a [...]
Update: Palm now has their official Pre 3 page up! Looks like 512MB of RAM is a go. Battery is 1230mAh (compared to 1150mAh on the Pre 2).
If you weren’t too impressed by the Pre 2 as the successor to the Pre Plus and original Pre, you’ll be excited to know that the new Palm Pre 3 ups the ante by offering a much larger 3.6″ WVGA (finally, a resolution and screen size bump!) screen with a larger QWERTY keyboard than the Pre 2. It’s powered by a beefy 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 8×55 CPU. No word on RAM(we’re thinking the same as the [...]
Turns out that HP’s trademarking of the name “Veer” wasn’t a coincidence, as today, the company revealed the new miniature QWERTY slider that’s as small in the face as a credit card.
Powered by the new 800MHz Snapodragon MSM7230 processor and webOS 2.1, the Veer features HSPA+ data, 512MB of RAM, and 8GB of storage. Veer is coming “early spring,” although carriers and pricing have yet to be announced; AT&T is a likely candidate with that HSPA+ radio on board.
Screen size is just 2.6 inches, with a 320 x 400 [...]
Yesterday’s “Motorola – Empower People” Superbowl commercial left me with one of those sarcastic smiles you only get when you feel somebody is exaggerating reality. The commercial was all about the Motorola Xoom in comparison to an iPad world. Surely we don’t cover tablets at pocketnow.com, but I’d like to talk about the main idea behind the ad. It’s something current Apple competitors still haven’t gotten right, and it’s called releasing true breakthrough products. Have a look at the Ad before we [...]
Verizon hasn’t exactly been the quickest in getting the Palm Pre 2 to market, but now a release date may finally be in sight: according to screenshots published by Engadget and Pre|Central, a third-party retailer is said to start selling the handset on February 17th for $100 on contract. However with HP Palm throwing a hardware launch on the 9th that very well may reveal upcoming smartphones along with the known tablet(S), we’re not sure how many people will be interested in what might be deemed last-generation hardware by the time it hits shelves.
The 1GHz Pre 2 is [...]
Palm has been rather coy with its promotion of the press event planned for February 9, playfully responding to sites posting leaked data with claims that we haven’t even scratched the surface of what it’s got planned. Keeping up with the teasing, the company has release a very short video clip of what can only be its soon-to-be announced hardware.
The safe money’s on Palm announcing a tablet, possibly the “Palmpad” or “Touchpad”, but maybe that’s too obvious, and Palm wants to keep everyone guessing. A new webOS smartphone would [...]
Like animals heading for high ground before a flood, when we start to see whole flocks of smartphones disappear, it’s a good bet that something big is coming. Apple’s well known for depleting its stocks of certain hardware in advance of a new release, but this time it’s Verizon with the vanishing gadgets. Check out Verizon’s website today, and you won’t see any Palm models listed along with currently-available smartphones.
The obvious guess is that Verizon’s move has something to do with the webOS event HP has been promising for February 9. If [...]
Hewlett Packard has sent another trio of tablet-related applications through the USPTO, “HP Duopad,” “HP Touchslate,” and “HP Touchcanvas,” following “HP Touchpad” from last week. When you include PalmPad, that makes five possible brandings for what are rumored to be only two or three upcoming units, so we suspect that some of these may either be red herrings or simply different potential names that the company is in the process of choosing among. Still, with tablets as in vogue as they are right now — over 100 were reportedly [...]
PreCentral has released a handful of documentation about the upcoming Topaz WebOS-powered tablet device from HP. What’s interesting is talk of a new version of the inductive-charging system we’ve seen with Palm’s WebOS smartphones, dubbed Touchstone v2. The new functionality is described as such:
…functionality looks to include both Bluetooth for wireless streaming of content and speakers for music.
The tap to share functionality comes via “communication coils” that enable “tap to share” use cases. Here’s what HP has [...]
Palm’s Pixi may not come off as a very powerful smartphone, owing both to its diminutive form factor and less-than-stellar 600MHz processor. If you’re a proud Palm owner looking to change some minds and show off just what your Pixi can do, a new kernel hack is available which allows you to boost your smartphone’s performance by up to 33 percent, for a maximum speed of 806MHz.
By popping in the latest UberKernel release and controlling its settings via the Govnah app, you can fine-tune the performance boost your phone will see. Pushing the Pixi this far is a [...]
HP’s February 9 webOS event is still a few weeks away, but there are already some new ripples in the webOS pool, as version 2.1.0 of the operating system is starting to head out to users.
Much like the content of the upcoming press event, we don’t know what’s inside webOS 2.1.0, either. Sporadic reports of users receiving update notifications have been popping up, with growing frequency. The update has been confirmed for the Pre 2 on Rogers in Canada, at least.
There may be some issues with the servers sending out the update, as some Pre 2 owners have [...]
Hewlett Packard has just filed for trademark protection on the term “HP Touchpad,” and unless it’s poised for a marketing push based around its laptop input devices, we suspect that this will be yet another tablet from the venerable Silicon Valley manufacturer. The description for the filing is fairly broad, however, the meat of it clearly refers to “computer hardware, namely memory cards; computer hardware for telecommunications; computer monitors; mobile digital electronic devices; mobile computers; handheld computers; portable computers; tablet computers; [...]
Hewlett Packard — the Palm Trademark Holding Company, actually — has just filed for trademark protection on the word “Palmpad” across all of Europe, suggesting that the company’s upcoming line of tablets will see an international rollout. Further evidence of a widespread release comes from the trademark offices of Australia and South Korea, where HP/Palm has also filed for Palmpad protection, following an appearance at the USPTO last July. Interestingly, Palm already has Palmpad trademarks on file in the UK, Canada, and Japan from back in the early [...]
Verizon still has yet to make the Pre 2 official, though at this point we’re expecting news of it any day. Alas, there might be a twist in this story. Some readers from PreCentral have done some URL hacking to come up with a page that shows what seems to be the Palm Pre Plus (no longer available on Verizon) with references to “Palm LTE Voice”. The page also features the little “LTE 4G” Verizon logo. Could this be a sign of an upcoming WebOS handset to land on Verizon with 4G capability? That’d sure be a great way to rejuvinize the WebOS platform. [...]
HP has been sending out notifications to news organizations that it intends to make a webOS-related announcement on February 9.
What could be in store for Palm devices? Well, we’ve heard that there’s a webOS tablet in the works, but it sounds like we can look forward to some smartphone news, as well. After all, HP advises that we “think small” in regards to the pending announcement.
On the lower end of exciting news, HP may just announce the schedule for webOS 2.0 updates coming to existing Palm smartphones. Towards the other extreme, the company [...]
Well, well, look what we have here: the Palm Pre 2 for Verizon on Walmart.com. As if we had any remaining doubts that the latest WebOS smartphone would show up on Verizon, this latest appearance tells us that we’re super close to the Verizon release–as in, any day now. The WebOS 2.0 device packs a significantly faster CPU and more RAM than the Palm Pre Plus of last year, plus features a modest redesign in terms of hardware.
Palm’s kicked off the second generation of webOS devices with the Pre 2, but you wouldn’t know it if you live in the US. Despite international launches, the only way to snag the Pre 2 in the States right now is directly from HP, unlocked, for full price. It’s possible the tide is beginning to turn, as the phone now shows up in Best Buy’s systems.
The data we can gleam from the leaked Best Buy inventory page doesn’t offer much of an insight into exaclty when the Pre 2 will see some wider distribution. Though just being in the that database is a good [...]
WiFi tethering isn’t necessarily new on WebOS, if you want to pay for it with the optional program included on devices like the Palm Pre Plus, which requires an added monthly fee to work. At long last, WebOS users can install a homebrew application to grant free WiFi, Bluetooth, or USB tethering for getting internet on the go. The developer, WebOS Internals, intends to have the app ready for release within a week.

You may not have to wait until Palm finishes production on its smartphone promotional video to catch a glimpse at the Pixi 2, as Sprint may have mistakenly shown us the Pixi 2 where it meant to use the first Pixi.
While Sprint’s page offering a free on-contract Pixi describes the original smartphone as we know it, the image Sprint uses clearly shows a phone with a front-facing video camera. The 360-degree and zoomable depictions of the phone show the correct model, but the main picture is definitely something that’s not quite a Pixi.
Is this the codename [...]
Last month we learned of code names for some as-of-yet unreleased Palm devices, hidden away in a ROM image. Now at least two of these models are set to make an appearance in an upcoming Palm promotional video.
Among other models, the ROM contained strings identifying “Broadway,” “Windsor,” “Mantaray,” and “Stingray” as upcoming Palm devices. Fast-forward to this week, and Palm is casting roles for a planned video, either to be used internally or shown on the web. The casting call didn’t reveal anything interesting, but actors [...]
