Today’s news from HP marks what looks like the end of an era, with the company deciding to throw in the towel on webOS-based smartphones. The platform has only been around for about a couple years, starting with rumors of something called “Nova” that Palm was working on. We got a proper name for the project with Palm announcing webOS and the Palm Pre at CES 2009.
By summer, Palm had launched the original Pre QWERTY slider. The Pixi gave users an option with a non-slide-out QWERTY keyboard.
Early 2010 brought news of upgrades to the Palm and Pixi, both [...]
The new direction HP is taking in regards to webOS 2.0 upgrades for existing webOS devices surely has lots of Palm users feeling confused and a bit betrayed. Yesterday, the potential for getting these updates suddenly changed from “all devices will get them sometime this year” to “don’t expect an easy OTA update, if we even come out with an update for your phone at all“. While HP said that it would work on some sort of plan to bring existing users along to a current webOS release, it still left a lot of ambiguities hanging. Now the company has put up a [...]
HP had plenty of news for its users today about upcoming hardware and expanded availability of recently-released devices, but what of the the original Pres, Pre Pluses, Pixies, and all? Users have been waiting patiently for a webOS upgrade to version 2.0 for these devices, with an early 2011 release seeming probable. That possibility is looking very unlikely now, as upgrades have clearly taken a back seat to the current roster of HP’s smartphones. The company revealed at today’s event that those phones will never get webOS 2.0 over-the-air, though tethered upgrades remain a [...]
Palm’s Pixi may not come off as a very powerful smartphone, owing both to its diminutive form factor and less-than-stellar 600MHz processor. If you’re a proud Palm owner looking to change some minds and show off just what your Pixi can do, a new kernel hack is available which allows you to boost your smartphone’s performance by up to 33 percent, for a maximum speed of 806MHz.
By popping in the latest UberKernel release and controlling its settings via the Govnah app, you can fine-tune the performance boost your phone will see. Pushing the Pixi this far is a [...]
WiFi tethering isn’t necessarily new on WebOS, if you want to pay for it with the optional program included on devices like the Palm Pre Plus, which requires an added monthly fee to work. At long last, WebOS users can install a homebrew application to grant free WiFi, Bluetooth, or USB tethering for getting internet on the go. The developer, WebOS Internals, intends to have the app ready for release within a week.

You may not have to wait until Palm finishes production on its smartphone promotional video to catch a glimpse at the Pixi 2, as Sprint may have mistakenly shown us the Pixi 2 where it meant to use the first Pixi.
While Sprint’s page offering a free on-contract Pixi describes the original smartphone as we know it, the image Sprint uses clearly shows a phone with a front-facing video camera. The 360-degree and zoomable depictions of the phone show the correct model, but the main picture is definitely something that’s not quite a Pixi.
Is this the codename [...]
After the similar Windows Phone 7 update which recently brought Places to the Microsoft platform, the new Facebook application brings the same functionality to webOS devices.
The update will bounce the application’s version number to 1.5.0 and the main feature that has been added is the ability to use Facebook’s Places. Now webOS device users will be able to check into their favorite Places together with their friends on Facebook. The application is free and requires webOS version 1.3.1.

We’ve mentioned Angry Birds for webOS and that certain glitch with the Pre that got in the way of updating the popular game — that has been fixed by the way — and it looks like the winter edition is now available for webOS users.
The blockbuster game is now available in the App Catalog for the Palm Pre and Palm Pixi and it will cost you $1.99. Rovio opted for releasing — advent calendar-like — daily levels until Christmas and this autumn’s Halloween Edition is also available for all those who are running webOS and want to help out the birds [...]
An alleged Pre issue was keeping the popular iOS and Android game – Angry Birds – from being updated and pushed to the App Catalog last week. According to a Rovio tweet, Palm has solved the issue and the game developer announced the arrival of the update to the Pixi and Pre soon.
Furthermore, Angry Birds Seasons is “almost there” for your webOS device according to Rovio as the festive version recently hit iOS and Android. There’s the picture to prove it in case you were skeptical or maybe even afraid you might be left out. In these circumstances, we [...]
The Palm Pre 2 is nearly here, so it shouldn’t be much of a surprise that the original Palm Pre is rather unceremoniously on its way out. Even though this time it’s Verizon, not Sprint, that will be getting first dibs on the Pre 2 in the US, Sprint has removed the Pre from its website, marking the beginning of the end for the handset.
Considering it’s been available since last June, and has seen an upgrade in the form of the Pre Plus, chances are that if you had your heart set on a Pre, you picked one up long ago. Even with the phone no longer an option for [...]
HP hasn’t yet revealed when its webOS 2.0 will be widely available, but news of a forthcoming Palm Pre 2 release in the UK, along with a software upgrade for existing phones, is now suggesting that the move to webOS 2.0 will be in full-swing by the end of the year.
While France already has access to the Pre 2 with its pre-installed copy of webOS 2.0, the rest of the world hasn’t been so lucky. Now Pocket-lint reports that HP has confirmed a UK release for the Pre 2 this Friday, November 12. Existing webOS devices may get the chance to upgrade the following month, as [...]
Almost two months after it first hit both Palm devices on Sprint, the AT&T Palm Pixi Plus has become the last of six American models to receive the webOS 1.4.5 update. Even AT&T’s Palm Pre Plus was upgraded almost a month ago, around the same time as Verizon’s Pre Plus, and about two weeks after Big Red’s Pixi Plus. The release comes just a day after rumors of a Palm Pre 2 have picked up thanks to a document published by French carrier SFR.
With the biggest webOS changes looming in the unreleased version 2.0, 1.4.5 is mostly a minor upgrade which [...]
Over at HP’s Wireless Central website, they’re giving away all Palm Pre and Pixi phones on AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint for free (with a new service plan)… AND they’re giving you $50 extra to spend on apps for the devices. As you know, HP recently aquired Palm since they weren’t doing so well. We’re not sure what this major sale means for the Palm Web OS devices. It could mean that there’s some new hardware coming soon, or it could mean that sales of the Web OS phones have just not been so good and they need to get some people to take them [...]
New Palm handsets may be on the way, according to a German certification corporation which has listed a pair of unknown models in its database. TÜV Rheinland, which had previously revealed GSM versions of the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus (that eventually landed on AT&T), has certified phones with the model numbers P102UNA and P102EWW; the Pre Plus is known as the P101UNA and P101EWW in GSM and CDMA variations, respectively, with P121UNA and P121EWW being the corresponding serial numbers for the Pixi Plus. Pre|central, which first reported the sighting based on one of its forum posts, [...]
Prices on the current crop of webOS devices seem to be falling at a torrid pace, with dual cuts by Verizon and possibly Sprint meaning that almost all four current models can be had for under $50. In fact, even without leaked evidence claiming to be from Sprint’s internal employee newsletter, “The Playbook, that drops the Pre to $49.99 and the Pixi to free, Verizon is now offering both of the improved versions of these handsets — the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus — for absolutely nothing on two-year contract.
AT&T, meanwhile, is already giving away the Pixi [...]
Palm has just released a beta software development kit for the next major version of its homegrown operation system, being dubbed webOS 2.0, which promises several attractive features for end-users and developers alike. For those keeping track, this will be the twelfth edition of webOS since its debut in June of last year, and the first major full-number version jump. Recently acquired by computing and information services giant Hewlett Packard, Palm has seen a reinvigorated interest in its platform that has been well-received by both critics and consumers.
According to both Pre [...]
Three weeks after its counterparts on the Sprint network got the same treatment, Verizon’s Palm Pixi Plus owners are starting to see the highly-anticipated webOS 1.4.5 update being offered for download. What makes this latest version of Palm’s proprietary operating system so important is that it allows users to run 3D games and apps developed with the company’s PDK software development kit.
Interestingly enough, while Sprint’s 1.4.5 rollout hit both the Pre and Pixi simultaneously, it is reportedly only Pixi (Plus) users who are seeing the upgrade right [...]
webOS recently got an update to firmware version 1.4.5, which brings to the Palm Pre and Palm Pixi a 3D gaming experience. According to PreCentral, even the Palm Pixi’s gaming experience is good, despite having a more limited processor than its more capable sibling, the Palm Pre and Palm Pre Plus. The Pixi is said to have a more limited frame rate in game play, but the over all experience is good.
We’ve seen the HTC EVO 4G being Modded to Charge Via Palm Pre Touchstone Charger from a hacker that modded his Sprint HTC EVO 4G to wirelessly charge via the induction charging mechanism of the Palm Pre’s Touchstone charger.
Inspired by this, XDA Developers’ Carnivore9 has made his mod to charge the T-Mobile HD2 using the Palm Pixi charger via induction charging. I hope all the tech guys out there will understand and love this! For the rest of us, it’s a nice “WOW-Mod”!

When the AT&T Palm Pre Plus was announced for May 16th at the $149.99 price point, there was no word on the Palm Pixi Plus. Now it is believed that the smaller webOS sibling will launch on AT&T on June 6th at the $49.99 price point after a two-year contract and rebates.
In an act to bolster sales and keep loyal users to the brand, Palm will be sending out envoys to stop random people on the street who are sporting either a Palm Pre or Pixi and give them free accessories. If you’re in need of some Palm gear, be sure to get noticed while you’re using your webOS phone in public. You can read more about Palm’s random acts of wow campaign from the company’s blog. According to Palm, “These Palm envoys could show up in any country where Palm phones are sold. And there are no catches, no obligations, and no strings [...]
It looks like Verizon Wireless is running a promotion giving away the mobile hotspot service on the Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus for free. The app is already available as a free download thru Palm’s App Catalog and according to a message we received from a Verizon Wireless rep:
Customers who purchase or upgrade to a Palm Pre and Palm Pixi will get the Mobile Hotspot for free. Existing customers who already have the service will find charges on their next bill will be $0.00.
The device pricing will be: $49.99 buy one get one free, and the Pixi will be $29.99 buy one, [...]
After mysteriously announcing two webOS devices will be coming at CES but not specifying which ones, AT&T has taken the wraps off of the GSM versions of the Palm Pixi Plus and Palm Pre Plus. According to AT&T, the GSM Pre Plus will go for $150 after rebate while the Pixi Plus will retail for $50 after rebate.
The devices are still listed as coming soon from AT&T, but you can sign up to be notified on the carrier’s site.
While we’re campaigning for Windows Mobile ports to Windows Phone 7 Series, Palm’s on their own mission to get developers to port their iPhone apps to webOS based smartphones, such as the Palm Pre and the Pre Plus. According to Electronostia, “The kit’s approach, which runs native code within the platform’s web-based framework, is said by AllThingsD to be so direct that an iPhone game can be converted in a “matter of days.” Few changes are necessary, and the performance is purportedly as fast as on its native Apple [...]
