Windows Phone 7 was launched at the end of 2010 — October 11 for Europe and Australia, adding America on November 8 — and, at that time, had ambitions for 30 countries worldwide, with support for five languages and a Marketplace operating in 17 countries. On February 21, 2011, Microsoft started pushing out the first ever Windows Phone 7 update in a first major global project of this kind in Redmond’s mobile history.
As we’re convinced you’ve heard us talking in our PocketCast (that is Episode 5, starting 10:41), there were mixed thoughts regarding [...]
Mobile analytics provider mtiks has made some Windows Phone 7 related numbers public on its blog regarding app statistics by device, country and usage.
According to the figures, the US market is the number one market for Windows Phone 7 applications with 57.3% — which is to be expected as a home country with a vast population and two carriers to start off the platform — followed by Germany (18.48%) and UK (7.49%).
Both app number and app usage-wise, the Samsung Focus is the most popular Windows Phone 7 device followed by the HTC HD7. From a centralized point [...]
Even if you are not a Windows Phone 7 user, you most probably learned by now that Microsoft has started pushing out a first Windows Phone 7 update, a prerequisite if you will for the upcoming NoDo to be out in March. On the same note, you probably also heard that there were some issues involved and Microsoft has made its stance public on the first ever Windows Phone 7 patch roll-out process.
According to Microsoft, 90% of the people who actually got the update notification and started the process have managed to finalize it with success. 90% is a good number if you refer to nine [...]
If you follow the news, you most probably know by now that LG is offering free applications exclusively to LG Windows Phone 7 owners via the LG apps store inside the Marketplace. New titles were added in December and then again in January and now LG is offering four additional app titles.
If last time the apps were third parties, with value of $29.2, and LG offered them all for free, this time there are four applications made by the manufacturer itself.
1. Today is an application that is based on the Panoramic screens on Windows Phone 7 to offer information about weather, [...]
We found out something interesting related to the LG Optimus 7 handset running Windows Phone 7, namely that it runs without a battery. Well, sort of!
With other devices running different operating systems, pulling the battery while this is being charged and the phone is on instantly cuts the power and the phones will turn off. With the LG Optimus 7, pulling the battery while charging will leave the device functioning. There might be an explanation involving electronic schematics: maybe the current doesn’t go through the battery and then to the phone but the other way [...]
The LG Optimus 7 handset we recently reviewed is (so far) a European device but we might see it on AT&T’s network in the U.S. soon as it passed FCC with frequency bands indicating complete compatibility with the carrier.
The device currently available on the market supports European bands only — that is GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900MHz and UMTS 900 / 1900 / 2100MHz. Adding the 850MHz and 1900MHz bands for both GSM and WCDMA would make it a great U.S. candidate with AT&T that already has its sibling, the LG Quantum (aka LG Optimus 7Q) in its Windows Phone 7 [...]
We already know that one of the unique benefits of LG Windows Phone 7 devices is that the Korean manufacturer is offering 10 free apps exclusively for LG Windows Phone 7 owners.
There is a dedicated section inside Marketplace called LG apps store which you can access using your LG Windows Phone 7 and that app store just got updated with new titles. The LG free software program is called hAPPiness and it now officially features Voice to Text – which we reviewed earlier plus an additional two new applications that entered the store by rotation: Fortune Coins (augmented [...]
Our LG Optimus 7 contest has come to an end after three days of receiving more than 230 submissions. We’ve reviewed the LG Optimus 7 and we asked a question that was split up in bits throughout the coverage. A big thanks to all of you who followed us and commented and thank you to all the participants!
Drum roll! Congratulations to Olof Ljunggren for winning a brand new LG Optimus 7 from pocketnow.com and LG. He told us his favorite Windows Phone 7 feature is “The homescreen with all the live tiles”. Please drop us an email at the same address with your contact [...]
LG’s Voice to Text application has been advertised as giving a unique experience on Windows Phone 7 ever since they announced the LG Optimus 7 and the Quantum but unfortunately the application was not released until recently.
Your whole workflow with this app will be reduced to starting the app, tapping the proper icon (for text message, email, tweet or note), talk and tap send (you need to select a recipient too). It will save you the time wasted on typing the text on the keyboard and, even if punctuation is not properly perceived, it’s always easier to re-read the [...]
The LG Optimus 7 has performed impressively well in head-to-head speed comparisons with other Windows Phone 7 devices, and now we may know why: a teardown has revealed that it’s one of the rare launch devices to use flash NAND for storage instead of microSD cards. In fact, Samsung’s Omnia 7 is the only other shipping WP7 handset we’re aware of that has eschewed the slower-but-cheaper-and-more-abundant cards. While some folks may bemoan the inability to upgrade these two handsets’ storage, the truth of the matter is that only the Samsung Focus grants card slot [...]
The moment I know you’ve been waiting for has arrived as we have reviewed the LG Optimus 7 handset. As we’re sure you’re aware from the rules of our contest, in order to stand a chance to win the LG Optimus 7, you will have to send us an answer to our question which was broken down into pieces throughout our review.
You can now submit your entry by sending an email to contest(at)pocketnow.com with the title “LG Optimus 7 Contest” and your answer to our question, which, if you got right, gives you a chance to win a brand new LG Optimus 7 from [...]
After taking the Look N Type application for a short spin on the LG Optimus 7, we take a look at another LG program available from the LG Application Store inside Windows Phone 7’s Marketplace.
The app is called Photo Stylist and is available for free for LG Windows Phone 7 owners. It is a program which enables you to add effects and filters to your pictures on the phone as well as customize them, all with the help of a real time preview. You can either select a picture from your Collection or you can have the app simply grab a photo using the handset’s camera and [...]
LG is offering free applications for LG Windows Phone 7 owners which can be accessed from the LG Application Store inside Windows Phone 7’s Marketplace.
Look N Type is an application similar to Android’s RoadSMS and TransparentSMS on Windows Phone 6.x platforms and it will overlay the camera image to the screen so that you can see what’s ahead of you while composing an Email, Text Message or tweet. While I don’t recommend texting and doing something else — because it can get you in trouble — the application is working well and is packed with [...]
Just a couple of days back we posted about some high magnification pictures of several display types employed by different manufacturers taken with a microscope to uncover the differences in pixels when it comes to different screen types and today we’re given a look at AMOLED vs. LCD on two Windows Phone 7 devices.
The two devices in the video are the Samsung Omnia 7 and LG Optimus 7, with the first one employing an S-AMOLED screen and the second an LCD screen. What you can clearly see in the video is that, besides the advantages of S-AMOLED screens (like contrast, deep [...]
The LG Optimus 7, one of which we are giving away brand new in our contest, comes bundled with another nice feature besides the unique DLNA support and it is called Panorama Shot.
This program accesses your camera application and enables you to take 180 degree panorama shots split out into five pictures with a single push of the shutter button. The principle is very easy: start the Panorama Shot application, press the Camera button to capture the first segment of your panoramic picture and then the application automatically overlays the arrows indicating in which direction to [...]
A unique feature of the LG Optimus 7 Windows Phone 7 handset — one of which you can win brand new with our contest — is DLNA support and implementation which enables you to hook your handset up with another DLNA-enabled device in order to play back music, videos and pictures.
Branded as LG’s own Play To application bundled with the LG Optimus 7, lets you easily enjoy content on your phone beyond its screen by connecting the device to a WiFi network, selecting another DLNA device on the network where the Optimus 7 will stream to and simply choose what you want [...]
The LG Optimus 7 Windows Phone 7 handset — one of which we’re giving away brand new — comes equipped with a 5-megapixel camera with auto focus and LED flash.
The device can capture the following picture and video sizes with several options built-in the camera application — which we’ll cover separately together with LG’s cool Panorama shot application:
Video: – 4.3 standard VGA (640 x 480) – 4.3 standard QVGA (320 x 240) – 16.9 wide HD 720p (1280 x 720)
Picture: – 4.3 Standard 5MP (2592 x 1944) – [...]
In this video we’re taking a look at the hardware on the LG Optimus 7 as well as the form factor and build quality of the Korean Windows Phone 7 handset.
The device is solid, feels good in hand and the materials used leave the impression of a well-designed, well-built handset. The battery cover is stainless steel and the casing is plastic — but doesn’t feel cheap at all — as well as plastic hardware buttons at the bottom (my only concern is that the silver color on these might fade away with time but we’ll have to see that in the long [...]
With Windows Phone 7 out worldwide now, we’re pretty excited about first gen handsets and with Microsoft’s strict hardware requirements related to the Operating System, most of the devices out there are pretty much the same specs-wise — as manufacturers tend to go with minimum or budget solutions.
At the end of the day, it all comes down to the quality of components, materials used as well as proprietary software bundled and the LG Optimus 7 is bringing a rock solid build to the table with nice finish and an 1,500mAh battery — largest among Windows Phone [...]
We’ve seen some pretty interesting Windows Phone 7 ads already, but LG has really raised the bar with a pair of compelling two-minute Optimus 7 commercials (and one Optimus One spot as well) which achieve that difficult marketing goal of entertaining while educating. All three eschew human actors for animated shorts that mix mediums such as stop-motion, claymation, and comic books with CGI enhancements for visually-exciting experiences; at the same time, the viewer becomes acquainted with several unique features of the handsets, like the DLNA WiFi sharing, Microsoft Sharepoint [...]
Introduction: With all the buzz around Microsoft’s brand new mobile platform — now available worldwide — we here at Pocketnow want to make you a part of the Windows Phone 7 experience, and a great way to do that is by giving away a cool Windows Phone 7 handset.
Contest prize: The prize is an LG Optimus 7* device powered by Windows Phone 7, and we’re giving a brand new unit away together with LG so you can experience all the exciting features of the new platform on a cool handset.
How to win: We will review the LG Optimus 7 handset as usual, in [...]
Australian developer Chris Walsh recently found a method to run so-called native code on the platform indicating that jailbreaking Windows Phone 7 could be possible, though it’s a first step in a huge process.
Same developer seems to have conquered another OS tower as he now tweeted that he’s got registry and file system access. The tweet also mentions that this was achieved on Samsung and HTC devices and the developer is committed to getting that on LG handsets too. Are these hacks device dependent? Normally they shouldn’t be but, as with the case of USB [...]
The Samsung Focus isn’t the only device that can act as a USB modem for your laptop or computer. In turns out that with a little bit of elbow grease, those rocking the LG Optimus 7 can also utilize this hidden feature of Windows Phone 7. Below are the steps to get it working (and by our measure, it should only be a matter of time before a procedure is available for every Windows Phone 7 device).
1. Unlock your LG Optimus 7 to access the program MFG (i.e. this is the passcode) 2. Download and install drivers for LG modem on your PC 3. Turn off the data connection [...]
