First announced back during February’s Mobile World Congress, LG’s second autosteroscopic 3D smartphone, the Optimus 3D Max, has already made its retail debut in Asia. Since then, we’ve been waiting to see the phone start spreading out into some additional markets around the globe. The 3D Max is now poised to do just that, with LG announcing today the European launch of the smartphone.
The 3D Max is a mostly minor refresh of the original Optimus 3D, but it does make a couple decent improvements. There’s not a big change to the phone’s processor a [...]
Now that smartphone manufacturers have had some time to look at the Ice Cream Sandwich source, we’re starting to hear some more detailed estimates of when certain handsets are likely to start receiving their updates to Android 4.0. Just last week, Sony Ericsson talked about its plans to get Ice Cream Sandwich out to its Xperia and Walkman models in early spring. Today it’s LG’s turn, and the company has taken to Facebook to post its current schedule for Android 4.0 deployment.
The first of LG’s phones to make the jump to ICS will get their updates [...]
After HTC officially announced which phones will get Ice Cream Sandwich and approximately when, it is now LG’s turn to publish information on its Facebook page related to the latest Google platform.
According to the information shared, the Optimus 2X, the Optimus Black, the Optimus 3D and the Optimus LTE will be the first ones to get the refresh. Exact information about the roll-out process and availability is expected later on, in December, as well as additional wording on other phones that might get the update, given “it is compatible with the functionality, [...]
Right at the end of October, LG announced its intent to bring Gingerbread updates to both the Optimus 3D and Optimus Black. A few days later, a leaked copy of the Optimus 3D Gingerbread ROM surfaced, giving us an early look at some of the new features the update will bring the smartphone. Today, LG issued a statement detailing those new features, and explained how the updated will be delivered to users.
When looking at the leaked ROM, we touched on some of the new video functionality coming along with the Optimus 3D’s Gingerbread update. The phone’s video editing [...]
We knew of plans to bring Android 2.3 Gingerbread to the LG Optimus 3D (which shipped with Froyo and is still on Android 2.2 even if meanwhile Google bumped the version number all the way to 4) and the manufacturer talked about November 21.
A leaked Optimus 3D Gingerbread ROM unveils Android 2.3.5 system as well as some improvements and new features like the ability to edit 2D and 3D videos, 3D to 2D video conversion as well as increased bitrates for 3D videos. HSPA+ also sees some fixes in order to bring faster speeds of up to 21Mbps.

We recently learned of LG’s plans to deny its dual-core Optimus 2X an upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich, a regrettable fate for the smartphone if the news ends up panning-out. Despite that rather large setback, the future isn’t entirely dim for Optimus 2X owners; LG just revealed that Gingerbread updates are on the way, not just to the 2X, but for the Optimus 3D and Optimus Black as well.
The Optimus 2X will be the first to have its shot at Gingerbread. According to its Facebook page, LG will begin distribution of the update tomorrow, November 1. A few weeks later on, it [...]
Having an autostereoscopic 3D display on your smartphone may be at the cutting-edge of handset technology, but it’s only useful so far as you have 3D content to enjoy. Manufacturers were wise to give 3D phones dual cameras, so you can always record some new 3D video in a pinch, but what if you’re looking for some gaming action, instead? Optimus 3D owners will soon have a whole new world of 3D content to explore, with LG just about to release its 3D game converter software.
The app is able to take normal 2D Android games and stretch them out into the third dimension. [...]
The LG Optimus 3D, just like its American brother (the AT&T Thrill 4G), comes with Android 2.2 Froyo out-of-the-box which is really holding back some people from purchasing an otherwise great phone. Some regions will get Gingerbread this month but the firmware which just became available is still Froyo.
With a V10K version number, the new Optimus 3D ROM is still Android 2.2 but this time it’s got the 3D Game Converter software baked in. That means that the phone will automatically take 2D-games and convert them into 3D, taking advantage of the phone’s main [...]
Looks like there has been quite a lot of activity in CyanogenMOD-land recently. After announcing the CyanogenMOD ROM for the LG Optimus 7 back at the end of July and teasing it at the beginning of August, the team announced that there’s an “early CM7 build for the LG Optimus 3D” available.
Additionally, users of the HTC Saga (aka HTC Desire S) have one more reason to rediscover their phones. The first CyanogenMOD Nightly build is out and if you feel brave enough you can give it a go, granted you understand the risks involved and that you’re likely to run [...]
Watch this week’s Android Revolution as we go through what’s hot and what’s not in the world of Google’s Android project. This week we discuss the recent teaser of a Samsung event in Berlin on September 1st and we also breeze through all the leaks of the week, which by the way include information on the Google Nexus Prime and how it may bring a 720p resolution screen to the market. We go through all the all the Andriod Smartphone releases for the week and all the software updates you definitely must look out for. In the Dark Side we go through the HTC Evo 3D [...]
The first smartphones with autostereoscopic screens first started showing up in Japan last year, and 2011 has seen greatly expanded availability with the release of the LG Optimus 3D and HTC EVO 3D. What’s next for these devices? LG’s Dr Henry Noh recently took the time to explain his vision for the sequel to the Optimus 3D.
Noh thinks that, in a world where it can be hard to make one smartphone stand out from another, 3D devices have a distinct advantage. To translate that advantage into increased sales, however, 3D can’t come at too high of a price. For him, [...]
The AT&T variant of the LG Optimus 3D, the AT&T Thrill 4G, has had its fair share of launch delays and it could have probably hit the market sooner. The carrier has finally made an announcement regarding the phone’s launch date, which is set for September 4.
Better being late than never doesn’t really apply to the fast-moving tech world of gadgets we live in (also applies to the U.S. variants of the Galaxy S II) but after being introduced in February at MWC, the Optimus 3D will finally make its way into the hands of AT&T customers. There’s [...]
There will certainly be a lot of interesting things on display at this week’s IFA in Berlin but not all of them will be hardware-related. LG is set to introduce yet another world’s first, this time an OpenGL-based 2D to 3D game conversion engine for smartphones.
The LG Optimus 3D, the manufacturer’s first take at a glasses-free 3D phone, will get a Maintenance Release (MR) this October and the 3D Game Converter will be part of it. The application will allow for a 3D user experience on previously purchased 2D games. There’s little work on the software side [...]
The LG Optimus 3D was introduced at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona as the manufacturer’s first glasses-free 3D phone. It will arrive on AT&T’s network as the Thrill 4G and will directly compete with the HTC EVO 3D on Sprint, while the worldwide Optimus 3D will try to lure in customers looking for the HTC EVO the EVO 3D’s international variant.
The phone is being marketed as one featuring a tri-dual architecture, which means that it packs three components that are dual: a dual-core processor; second, dual-channel data transport and [...]
We’ve been wondering all along why AT&T dropped the 3D moniker and chose to go with the 4G in the case of its own LG Optimus 3D, marketed as LG Thrill 4G? There might have been a last minute change — or a mistake in the Best Buy buyer’s guide — as the phone now shows up as the AT&T Thrill 3D.
If you look at the screenshot above taken from Best Buy’ buyer’s guide you’ll see the LG Thrill 3D. It’s the same LG Thrill 4G, the AT&T variant of LG’s first glasses-free 3D phone, the Optimus 3D. It’s been [...]
We knew that the CyanogenMod team was already working on bringing some custom Android goodness to the LG Optimus 3D and now, thanks to developer Ricardo Cerqueira, we can get a glance at how it will look and work on the phone.
In the video below you can see that the build is running buttery smooth with no problems whatsoever on LG’s first glasses-free 3D smartphone. NenaMark seems to like the build too as it reports 58 fps and according to the developers, 3D is also working so the main selling point of the device won’t be affected by the custom ROM. Check out the [...]
As was the case in the television industry, OEMs that make smartphone are hoping that 3D is the next big thing that drives millions of consumers to upgrade to more expensive hardware. We are in the midst of the first wave of 3D phone releases: today you can buy an LG Optimus 3D, the Sprint HTC EVO 3D, and a couple others. It remains to be seen whether 3D on a phone will play out like it did with televisions (few have upgraded), or if the new technology will be a true value-add that becomes standard on all future high end smartphones. Those of you that are using a 3D smartphone, let us [...]
After CyanogenMod recently added support for the Samsung Galaxy S II, two new recent and higher-end phones will join the party as custom ROMs are in the works for both the HTC Sensation and the LG Optimus 3D.
The two screenshots above were posted on Google+ by CyanogenMod developers Ricardo Cerquiera and Ed Carrigan. As you can see, Android 2.3.4 is in for the two phones and, even if it’s not a huge step for Pyramid users, it will be great news for Optimus 3D owners as the phone is shipping with Android 2.2 Froyo. The builds are still cooking so don’t expect to [...]
The LG Optimus 3D — soon the AT&T Thrill 4G — is shipping with Android 2.2 Froyo out of the box which could be a deal breaker for some but the manufacturer promised an official update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread (coming this autumn according to rumors).
You’d expect a full-3D experience when it comes to a 3D phone but LG went with its classic LG UI. Because of the technology, 3D is only available in landscape but unfortunately the UI supports neither landscape mode nor 3D mode. What the phone has though is a 3D launcher, where you’ll find a couple of [...]
The LG Optimus 3D, launched at this year’s MWC in February, is coming to AT&T as the Thrill 4G. It should be available over at Radio Shack starting August 7 — even though a late July launch was rumored for the phone’s availability — but you can now secure your unit.
If you want some non-HTC 3D goodness and you’re on AT&T, you can now reserve a unit for you by going to the Radio Shack store and grabbing a $50 gift card. When it will be available at the retailer, the phone will set you back $79.99 on a two-year contract, $549.99 for the [...]
Whether 3D is a gimmick or a novelty which will soon become a standard is yet unknown as it is too early to say but it’s definitely the selling point of the HTC EVO 3D and the LG Optimus 3D. They’re both their respective manufacturer’s sole 3D phones and, as fresh as they get, they will be coming exclusively to Rogers Canada.
The carrier has just introduced both the HTC EVO 3D and the LG Optimus 3D and will make a microsite available for customers to pre-order either one of the two (existing Rogers customers can now reserve their HTC EVO 3D or LG Optimus 3D on [...]
The LG Optimus 3D — with its AT&T Thrill 4G variant — and the HTC EVO 3D — both European and Sprint — are two of the current 3D-enabled smartphones. Besides both sporting an auto-stereoscopic display that allows for glasses-free 3D content playback, they both sport dual stereoscopic cameras at the back for capturing their own 3D content.
Aside from pictures you take, videos you shoot and the games that come bundled or offered with your smartphone, there really is no huge choice for 3D content available. This will probably change as games and [...]
Besides all the funky internals which make it a powerful phone, the LG Optimus 3D sports a dual five-megapixel stereoscopic camera at its back which allows for both 2D and 3D image capturing and video recording.
The phone is able to record 2D videos in 1080p at 30fps and 3D videos in 720p at 30fps. The two-dimensional videos are nothing new but the three-dimensional ones can be played back on the LG Optimus 3D, on an external 3D display to which it can connect via HDMI or on another 3D-enabled device, directly from YouTube. We’ve made a couple of test recordings, both 2D [...]
