LG has seriously been torturing owners of the Optimus 2X when it comes to bringing the phone an Ice Cream Sandwich update. The mess all started well over a year ago, just after ICS was first announced, when LG posted to Facebook that the Optimus 2X most definitely would not be seeing an update arrive. By November, the manufacturer was backing away from that position, though still wasn't committed to deliver ICS. Shortly thereafter, it finally switched gears all the way and announced that the 2X would be among the very first of its phones to receive the update. Over the course of the next ...

Late last month, we got some new information on plans for an official Ice Cream Sandwich update for the LG Optimus 2X. After some initial confusion over just whether or not the handset would be getting ICS, things finally seemed confirmed for the phone. As time passed, though, the update never seemed to materialize; we were expecting it for the first half of 2012, and after LG failed to deliver, had started looking to sometime this quarter instead. Perhaps those delays were signs that LG was losing confidence in ICS for the Optimus 2X, because that news that arrived at the end of July, ...

LG's Optimus 2X, the smartphone that introduced us to dual-core processing, has been on a long and rough road towards the hope of getting an official Ice Cream Sandwich update. Back when ICS was first announced late last year, the question of whether or not the Optimus 2X would see an update initially seemed up in the air. Eventually, LG committed to the update, and we saw it scheduled for a release sometime in the second quarter of 2012. Obviously, that never came to pass, and a Facebook posting from LG seemed to suggest that the update would arrive in Q3, instead. It looks like we're in ...

The road that leads to Ice Cream Sandwich has been a bumpy one for LG's Optimus 2X. Shortly after Google's official ICS unveiling with the Galaxy Nexus, we started hearing from manufacturers about their own plans for bringing ICS to existing handsets. Some early comments from LG on its Facebook page made it seem like ICS on the 2X just wasn't going to happen. Later, we saw that note deleted, and further news from LG revealed that it still hadn't made its mind up about the 2X and Android 4.0. That uncertainty didn't last long, though, and by November the manufacturer had confirmed that the ...

Now that smartphone manufacturers have had some time to look at the Ice Cream Sandwich source, we're starting to hear some more detailed estimates of when certain handsets are likely to start receiving their updates to Android 4.0. Just last week, Sony Ericsson talked about its plans to get Ice Cream Sandwich out to its Xperia and Walkman models in early spring. Today it's LG's turn, and the company has taken to Facebook to post its current schedule for Android 4.0 deployment. The first of LG's phones to make the jump to ICS will get their updates sometime in the second quarter of next ...

We've been seeing what feels like a new push lately to get Gingerbread updates out to aging Android handsets. Maybe it's starting to get to the point where manufacturers really feel the pressure to get those updates finished, lest their products become part of a rather undignified collection of smartphones that enter 2012 running two-year-old software. We just heard about the Motorola Milestone 2 getting ready to receive its Gingerbread update in Europe, and now LG's announced that its Optimus 2X update is now available in the UK. LG talked about its overdue Gingerbread update plans for a ...

After HTC officially announced which phones will get Ice Cream Sandwich and approximately when, it is now LG's turn to publish information on its Facebook page related to the latest Google platform. According to the information shared, the Optimus 2X, the Optimus Black, the Optimus 3D and the Optimus LTE will be the first ones to get the refresh. Exact information about the roll-out process and availability is expected later on, in December, as well as additional wording on other phones that might get the update, given "it is compatible with the functionality, features and performance of ...

Late last week, we learned of a comment made by LG that seemed to discount the possibility of bringing an Ice Cream Sandwich update to the dual-core Optimus 2X. While the statement itself was definitive enough, the circumstances surrounding it, including LG subsequently taking it down from Facebook, had us wishing the company would speak up and set the record straight, one way or the other. Now we've finally heard some follow-up comments from LG, painting the situation as not nearly so dire. While LG had said previously "we will not be introducing Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich updates on ...

We recently learned of LG's plans to deny its dual-core Optimus 2X an upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich, a regrettable fate for the smartphone if the news ends up panning-out. Despite that rather large setback, the future isn't entirely dim for Optimus 2X owners; LG just revealed that Gingerbread updates are on the way, not just to the 2X, but for the Optimus 3D and Optimus Black as well. The Optimus 2X will be the first to have its shot at Gingerbread. According to its Facebook page, LG will begin distribution of the update tomorrow, November 1. A few weeks later on, it will be the Optimus ...

When it comes to Android smartphones where their manufacturer has denied the possibility of an Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade, we're running into surprise after surprise. First, we heard from Google that the Nexus One, despite being the flagship Android model at the time of its release, would not see an official update. The latest to join that club shows that not even dual-core handsets are immune, with LG posting that it will not distribute an Ice Cream Sandwich update to the less-than-a-year-old Optimus 2X. Now, admittedly, LG hasn't had a stellar reputation for getting updates to the 2X, ...

After LG released its Optimus 2X in the States as the G2x on T-Mobile, we started hearing tales of various problems with the phone. Some users seemed to skate by just fine, but others reported their smartphones being plagued by resets, among other bugs. While T-Mobile initially distanced itself from such reports, it later confirmed that it had received complaints from "a small percentage of customers", and that they should be addressed in a future update. We're still waiting for both that and a Gingerbread update to arrive (assuming they aren't combined into one), but at least one G2x ...

The LG Optimus 2x is a solid smartphone with a great build quality, dual-core 1GHz Tegra 2 processor and graphics chip, eight-megapixel camera with LED flash, HDMI mirroring and more. You might know it better as the T-Mobile G2x. What you see pictured above is a WIND branded LG Optimus 2x. While the unlocked version is the LG P990, the version above is the P999, which recently passed FCC. Besides the clear carrier line-up indication there are no details related to pricing or availability but given Videotron has the smartphone for $529.95 outright, it should be around the same price range. ...

As a dual-core Tegra 2-powered speedster, it's no surprise that LG's Optimus 2X supports recording 1080p video. Despite having seemingly capable hardware, reports from people who have gotten some hand-on time with pre-release versions of the phone noted a less-than-impressive 1080p experience, with an inconsistent framerate and under-impressive clarity. LG has come up with a software update that address some of these issues, but there's still room for improvement. When looking at an Optimus 2X running software V09C, GSM Arena noted several issues with 1080p performance. In their tests, the ...

Sprint has a couple new BlackBerrys heading its way, according to a recently-leaked spreadsheet, along with a mysterious LG Optimus Slider. The BlackBerry Bold 9930 is the CDMA version of the Bold 9900, which we just heard might get its release date pushed back to September. Here we can see that Sprint is expecting the 9930 for August 21; we haven't specifically heard that the 9900 delay, if true, would also affect the 9930, but considering the hardware similarities, there's a good chance it might. At the very least, it looks like Sprint will be getting the smartphone sometime in late ...

Here's the comparison you've been waiting for, filmed by guest Editor Craig Gillispie: a comparison between the hottest dual-core phones on the market right now, the LG Optimus 2x and the Samsung Galaxy S 2. We run benchmarks, compare web browsing performance, determine which has more RAM upon bootup, and compare the time it takes each to launch certain applications. As you can see from the below spec comparison, the Galaxy S 2 looks better on paper, with a faster-clocking CPU, a big battery, better 1080p video recording in terms of framerate, a higher resolution front-facing camera, plus ...
