Nokia, a Finnish smartphone company was founded in 1871. What started as a paper manufacturing company evolved into one of the worlds largest and well known names in the mobile device market. Nokia currently works mostly with smartphones and mobile software. In early 2011 the company's new CEO, Stephen Elop signed a strategic partnership with Microsoft where Microsoft will gain access to Nokia's mobile services such as Ovi Maps and Nokia would adopt Windows Phone 7 as an operating system for their new smartphones over the company's own Symbian OS. Whatever happened to the Nokia Lumia 1820? We'd been talking about it since last year, and for a while we were hoping it might make an appearance at MWC, but then it dropped off the face of the earth. Was there still a chance this guy might be headed for launch, or were we barking up the wrong tree all along. As if from out of nowhere, the 1820 is back on our radar this evening, with a case maker's website alluding to the smartphone, along with a few rumored Samsung models. Noreve makes some fancy leather cases for a whole bunch of smartphones. Pull up one of those listings, and edit the ...

Nokia's Lumia 630 (as well as the 635) has been a long time coming. The name's been around since December, and early looks at screenshots ultimately gave way to leaked renders. Odds are, we'll finally see Nokia go official with this model at its April 2 event, but until that day gets here, will we ever have an opportunity to witness the 630 out in the real world? That's a definite possibility, and the pics you see up top very well may be our first in-the-wild look at this upcoming Windows Phone handset. The big problem here is just how very close up we are to the phone itself, obscuring ...

Nokia has already sent-out press invitations for its launch of the future of its Lumia line-up. These would be the first Nokia Lumia smartphones that are pushed to launch from the Microsoft leadership, and given the fact that Microsoft is a software company first, we wonder how this mix will help Nokia differentiate its Windows Phones going forward. Historically Nokia has done the best job in this department, and we get new rumors today about what to expect. If you remember, the previous Nokia updates were dubbed "Amber" and "Black". Rumors have Nokia calling its next firmware "Blue", ...

Nokia's got a couple buns in the oven – and by “buns” we mean Windows Phone handsets, and by oven we mean, well, assembly line, we guess. But no matter how we're referring to them, phones like the Lumia 630/635 and Lumia 930 have just been itching to go public. Earlier we heard that Nokia might have its eye on an April 19 launch event, but just last week we picked up on a new rumor suggesting that the phones could debut quite a bit sooner, and might be unveiled right at the start of the month, on April 2. Sure enough, today Nokia starts sending out invitations to just such an April 2 ...

When talking about smartphones, Apple and Blackberry are somewhat alone in that they make their own  hardware. Phones powered by Microsoft's OS and Android are built by OEMs like HTC, Nokia, Samsung, LG, Motorola, and others. Back in the day, major companies like Dell, HP, Compaq and others would outsource the production of their devices to OEMs. Over time, these OEMs began to gain popularity and eventually brought hardware carrying their own brand to the market. Ironically, Compaq, Dell, HP, and others have all but gotten out of the smartphone/PDA game, having been replaced by the OEMs ...

On September 3, 2013, Microsoft and Nokia announced a deal through which the Finnish manufacturer's Devices and Services division has been acquired by the Redmond-based software giant. After internal consents from the board, there were still a couple of hurdles in the deal's way, mostly represented by regulatory approvals. Nokia announced that next month, April, is when it expects "the sale of substantially all of its Devices & Services business to Microsoft". This will arrive just a tad late compared to the initial Microsoft-Nokia deal forecast of the acquisition closing within the ...

When it comes to Windows Phone news, as well as news of the latest Lumia smartphones from Nokia, there are two dates we've been keeping in mind: April 2, and April 19. The former is when Microsoft's Build conference gets underway this year, and sometime during the event (which runs though April 4), we're expecting Microsoft to make a big Windows Phone 8.1 announcement. The latter date is one we've heard rumored for a Nokia event, where it would presumably introduce its first native WP8.1 handsets. Now, however, it seems that those new Lumias may make their first public appearance a little ...

Inbox Zero. It's become something of a myth in the Pocketnow Weekly recording studio ever since we started actively courting listener feedback all those months ago. Skip a listener-mail section here, another one there, and before you know it you've got a mountain of mail it'd take a whole episode to get through. So that's just what we're doing. Just like we did on episode 076, we're devoting an entire podcast to your missives. We'll hear from people concerned about dual-SIM stigma, people worried about the future of Apple, and people writing to remind us that the automated home isn't as ...

Rumor has it that Nokia might be presenting its latest spread of Windows Phone handsets in just a smidge over a month from now, with a possible event in the works for April 19. We'd love to see that happen, as there are a handful of in-development models we've been following lately that we'd love to see go official. Candidates for what might show up have included the Lumia 630, Lumia 635, and the Lumia 930, which we recently heard is how the phone codenamed Martini might arrive. Today we add one more to the running, as we hear about what sounds like another budget-priced Lumia, the Lumia ...

The Lumia 2520 graced our lives months ago, brightening our unboxing desk and leaving a lasting first impression. Sadly, it didn't stick around long enough for us to give it the full review treatment, disappearing in a shipping accident so mysterious we sometimes still bring it up on the Pocketnow Weekly podcast. Fortunately, Nokia has sent us a replacement unit, and this time around it's included a bonus: the recently-released Nokia Power Keyboard. The long-awaited accessory brings two USB ports, a 2,027 mAh battery, and one of the most comfortable keyboards ever to Nokia's Windows RT ...

Samsung is next as we get more leaks of what to expect from its S Band, and also what to expect about a premium Galaxy S5. We later go through some of the new iWatch rumors, and specifically the pedometer patent. We end today's show talking about the new Facebook video ads that ...

Available since the end of last year for PureView devices, the Nokia Refocus app allows you to take Lytro-like (light field) pictures with your Nokia-made Windows Phone. The way the app achieves this is simple: it shoots a variety of consecutive frames with different focus settings, after which the user can simply tap on a part of the image to display that region in focus (hence using the proper frame from the burst). The Finns today announced that the Nokia refocus app is now available for all Lumia smartphones that are powered by Windows Phone 8. “As we have seen with the great imaging ...

Upon returning from MWC, we heard rumors of an upcoming Nokia phone, codenamed Martini, that would run Windows Phone 8.1, aka Blue. A rumor popped up shortly after that there might be an April 19 Nokia event, where said Martini would officially be unveiled, alongside some other Windows Phone devices from the new Lumia line-up. Today, we're hearing new rumors, thanks to @evleaks, that the phone codenamed Martini, will actually be the Nokia Lumia 930. Whether this Nokia Lumia 930 is the same as the one we were expecting to be unveiled at MWC is unknown; however, those rumors mentioned ...
