I love my Nexus 7. It's one of the best tablets on the market for the money. Recently, Google updated it to Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean and brought with it irritating lag! That lag presents itself at the worst times. Another issue I wanted to address was battery life. Although the battery on the Nexus 7 isn't small, in my use I needed another hour or two of use. Investigating solutions that would address both lag and battery life, some of our readers recommended Franco Kernel, a replacement kernel, kernel updater, and settings control panel all-in-one. It won't work with every device, but if ...

We've already heard rumors that this year's Google I/O in May could bring with it a new Nexus 7 tablet, and so far those claims have focused on introducing changes like a thinner bezel and the move to a full HD 1080p screen. Now, an analyst report is suggesting that Google and ASUS could dump NVIDIA as the company behind the tablet's chipset, instead moving to a Qualcomm-made component. Pacific Crest’s Michael McConnell claims that Google and ASUS will likely move to a Snapdragon S4 Pro for the new Nexus 7, like the APQ8064 chip in the Nexus 4. While that won't offer quite the same ...

Even if it takes six Skype calls to make a podcast happen, we're gonna do it for you folks, because that's just the kind of guys we are. And it's a good thing, too; while the news cycle has calmed down somewhat in the wake of last week's big BlackBerry event, there's still plenty to talk about from the worlds of Android and Windows Phone, from rumors and speculation to ... well, no, just rumors and speculation, really. But it's scintillating stuff, especially if you're into things named "M7" and "Nokia Tablet." All that, plus listener mail and a heaping helping of Joe Levi's robot voice, ...

A Bluetooth fix was mentioned by a certain Google employee which could be one of the features in the upcoming Android 4.2.2 update -- spotted in the wild on Nexus 4 devices -- but unfortunately the new Android codes we've seen over the weekend appear in AOSP are not referring to this point-update. According to reports, unnamed Google employees rocking a Nexus 4, 7, 10, and Galaxy Nexus phones are currently testing Android 4.2.2. International Business Times claims to have tested the updates and concludes that it's "minuscule at best, with minimal changes to security and bugs". Should be ...

Watch today's Pocketnow Daily as we talk about the Nexus 4 availability in stores, even though that might change by the time this video goes live. We next talk about Asus and Google working on a newer version of the Nexus 7 with a better display and design. HTC makes the news next as we now have confirmed dates and invites for their M7 press event. Then the iPad 5 takes the spotlight as we find images of the new design, which is exactly as we currently see the iPad mini, only bigger obviously. We end today's show talking about Apple's release of a 128GB iPad 4 and question the need for it ...

If your phone or tablet is in Google's Nexus family you can quickly and easily restore your device to the latest, stock image. If you've already applied a custom ROM and don't want it anymore, want to force an update to the lastest version of Android, or even convert your YAKJUxx Galaxy Nexus to a TAKJU or YAKJU version for faster OTA updates, this is how you do it. Before we get started, following these instructions will wipe what's on your device, and anytime we talk about flashing there's a risk (albeit slight) that your device may never wake up again. Proceed at your own risk. Next, ...

Despite previous rumors according to which Google will unveil a new family of LG-made Nexus devices at its yearly I/O, we sounded our beliefs on our Podcast that it was too early for a Nexus phone and, instead, we'll probably see a Nexus 7 refresh. According to a recent report, Asus and Google have teamed up once again for a seven-inch tablet. The Nexus 7 follow-up is expected, according to sources in the supply chain, to land in May. May 15-17, 2013, is the date for this year’s Google I/O and could be the perfect opportunity for a follow-up. Those who claim to have seen engineering ...

January: the post-holiday comedown mixes with the post-CES recovery and pre-MWC quiet to form a lull of epic proportions. Fortunately though, leaks and rumors never stop, and we've got a few of them to bat around on this episode of the Weekly. Today, Joe Levi and Anton D. Nagy each return to the podcast to talk rumored Sony Xperia tablets, LG Windows Phones, and the will-it-never-die speculation surrounding a cheap iPhone. Also making the cut: the HTC M7 and Samsung Galaxy S IV, the Huawei Ascend W2, and some far-out pseudo-news regarding LG's supposed "Nexus 5" and "Nexus 7.7." All that, ...

Remember that neatly-matching Nexus 7 dock we took a couple looks at late last year? The one that didn't even surface until nearly half a year after the tablet's debut? Well, we were hoping for it to show up right around New Year's, but that just hasn't happened. So, where is it? Apparently it's still on the way, and should finally start shipping within the next two weeks. That two-week claim comes from one The Verge's sources, while B&H Photo, which has been taking pre-orders for the dock, is expecting it to land a little sooner, now saying that it should be available as of January ...

Just because it's a new year doesn't mean things are changing with the Pocketnow Weekly podcast. We're still shaking up the host roster on occasion, and we're still squeezing more than 90 minutes of discussion out of the mobile-technology news sector, even in the pit of the post-holiday lull. On our first podcast of 2013, Joe Levi joins us to talk Android amid a sea of pre-CES leaks, but not before we dive into a long and detailed discussion about the new mobile version of Ubuntu - a platform we'll learn how to consistently pronounce someday, but not today. We also touch on Sailfish and ...

Watch today's Pocketnow Daily as we talk about our Samsung ATIV S review along with some specifics on why this phone is so hot. Then it's more $99 Nexus 7 talk, even though the price tag has grown a bit to $130 or $150. Then Samsung returns to the news, this time because they've just confirmed that they will be offering their Windows Phone legacy customers the 7.8 upgrade. Apple then shows us how they don't care about start-ups by the results of a recent story regarding the POP charger for iOS devices. We end today's show by talking about LG and how their advertisement is ridiculous in a ...

The $99 Nexus tablet is one rumor that just won't go away. It's not like the Nexus 7 isn't already one of the most affordable Android tablets around, but it just hasn't been able to shake this rumor that ASUS and Google could be cooking-up an even cheaper version. So far, that $99 price point has been the focus of these claims, but some new rumors suggest that while the tablet may soon be a reality, you could end up paying just a smidge more for it. Supposedly, the companies will be using China's O-Film Tech to produce the touchscreens for this new Nexus, and by using components employing ...

Last week we got to check out the official ASUS dock for the Nexus 7 tablet, thanks to a short video hands-on. The dock's been something of a mystery, since we're already coming up on being half a year out from the Nexus 7's release, and we've yet to see it reach any kind of broad availability. A listing for the dock on the ASUS Japanese website showed it as out of stock, and we weren't aware of any retailers that had managed to secure their own stocks. That's finally starting to change, and B&H in the US is accepting pre-orders for the dock. That Japanese price worked out to about the ...

Read OnIt's that time again when we slowly need to get used to writing a new number when mentioning dates; luckily thanks to our smart devices we don't need to go out and look for a 2013 wallet calendar, unless we really want to. It's that time when we look back at what happened this year, with all the goods and bads, and anxiously look forward to what next year might bring. As usual here at Pocketnow we're happy to tell you what we think, and we're excitedly waiting to hear your opinions, in our upcoming series which will contain both 2012 recaps and 2013 predictions. We'll have something for ...

What the heck is it with Nexus-series devices and ridiculous delays before their official accessories surface? With last year's Galaxy Nexus, we were keeping out eyes peeled for the eventual arrival of some its gear well into the spring. The Nexus 7 has been shipping since July, but key accessories have been MIA. Last month, word arrived that an official dock would soon be available, but details were sparse. We still have a lot of questions about the dock, especially when it comes to global availability, but thanks to a new unboxing video, we can check out the Nexus 7 dock in all its ...
