There have been a bunch of leaks attempting to show off components which will supposedly find homes in the iPhone 5S, but a lot of what we've seen so far has been a little... meh. That is, we've seen buttons, connectors, and other tiny parts, but not so much in the way of more substantial hardware. If you've been craving something more significant, we just might have what you need, as a couple new leaks have revealed what just might be the iPhone 5S's motherboard and its display panel. There have been fakes in the past – especially when it comes to iPhone circuit boards – so what makes ...

Rumors about a company looking to buy-up Nokia are nothing new. While nothing ever seems to come of them, those suggestions keep popping up again and again over the years, and it sure seems like more often than not, we're talking about Microsoft considering making the purchase. The subject is back on our mind today, but in a slightly different context, with Huawei voicing its interest in maybe snatching-up Nokia. Huawei execs are gathered in London for the P6 announcement, and Richard Yu, chairman of the company's consumer business group, took the opportunity to put forth the idea that ...

Of all the smartphone platform upstarts currently working on their wares, Tizen has the potential to be the most successful. For one thing, it's got the backing of Samsung, who's just an unchecked juggernaut at the moment. Then there's the hardware, and what little we've heard so far – mentions of things like 720p displays – had us hopeful that Tizen would be home to considerably higher-end hardware than the likes of which we're seeing from the first Firefox OS efforts. Today, we continue to learn about what to expect from Tizen hardware, checking out some evidence that Samsung is ...

There have been a couple reports in recent months of HTC dealing with a wave of prominent executives breaking their ties with the company. As HTC works out its HR issues internally, we were left wondering what would be come of all those employees who walked away. As it turns out, at least two of them think that they have the know-how to play the smartphone game for themselves, and have announced the launch of their new company Kazam (image unrelated), which will develop smartphones for the European market. We often talk about how the key to smartphones sales has really become promotion, ...

Huawei's Ascend P6, the company's new super-thin Android flagship, has been leaking like a rusty bucket for several weeks now, and we've seen hardware renders, UI screenshots, and checked out some relatively decent rumored specs. Still, we had a few lingering questions, so it's great to see Huawei finally make things official today, announcing the Ascend P6 at a London event. So, what have we got? Pretty much exactly what we were expecting: a 4.7-inch 720p screen, 2GB of RAM, and a 1.5GHz quad-core K3V2 SoC. Those specs would be a lot more impressive on a phone coming out in 2012, but ...

Remember last week how T-Mobile was teasing a waterproof smartphone? It posted a video last Wednesday showing such a handset in action (though without revealing the actual phone itself) and promised to have more news about this hardware to follow on Thursday. Except, that didn't happen on Thursday, nor Friday, and we even managed to go all weekend without news about this mystery waterproof phone arriving. OK, sure we were expecting it to be the Sony Xperia Z (especially after AT&T confirmed the Galaxy S 4 Active as an exclusive), but why wasn't T-Mobile following up on its tease? Well, ...

So far, Windows Phone has done an admirable job at avoiding temptations to get caught up in the hardware spec rat race, as so many Android OEMs do. WP hardware may not have the highest-end components around, but darn it – it gets the job done. Still, while the platform may not be racing to adopt the bleeding edge, it does need to modernize itself from time to time – just look at the addition of 720p support last year. We've already heard rumors that 1080p could be in the platform's future, along with support for new SoCs to help drive all those pixels. The latter's where our interest ...

We've been talking about Microsoft's plans for the next big Windows Phone 8 update, GDR2, for months now. Some of the picture of how the update would arrive has been clear: for instance, we know that Nokia models will start getting their "Amber" updates next month, and that's going to be tied-in to the release of GDR2. But with how inconsistent Windows Phone update distribution has become, that's hardly confirmation that other OEMs would be working on the same schedule. While still incomplete, we can now put together a slightly more encompassing picture of update availability, thanks to ...

With all the leaks we've been seeing in recent weeks, it's sure felt like Nokia's first 41-megapixel Windows Phone model, so far known by codename EOS, was nearly ready to launch. Last week, we learned of invitations going out for a July 11 Nokia event that sure seemed to hint that it could mark the announcement of the EOS. Today we add some more fuel to that launch fire, with an unknown Nokia handset passing through the FCC that sure could be the EOS. Nokia model RM-877 includes support for HSPA+ on the 850, 1700, and 1900MHz bands, as well as LTE on bands 2, 4, 5, and 17. Bands 4 and 17 ...

Verizon was in no hurry to get started with sales of Samsung's Galaxy S 4, but after taking its sweet time, we finally saw the carrier begin carrying the Android last month. Presumably, that was going to be it, and our attention started turning to other Verizon launches, like its similarly delayed interest in the HTC One. However, it looks like the carrier could still have another trick or two up its sleeve, and a new leak attempts to reveal plans for a line of limited edition GS4 designs. The leaked screenshots reveal GS4 case designs from firms like Kid Robot, Undefeated, KAWS, and ...

Read OnIt's been a couple weeks since we first got confirmation of the Moto X, capping-off months of Motorola "X phone" rumors. Even before we had that name, we had been hearing quite a bit of talk about the phone's possible hardware specs, and tried to gain some insight from potential benchmark results. What we were able to suss out sure made the X seem a lot less capable than the 2013 flagship phones we're seeing from companies like HTC, Samsung, or Sony. Now some newly arrived Moto X specs have leaked, and while they finally go into detail about a number of the hardware's capabilities, they ...

Last week, some new images arrived that showed a phone very similar to the leaks we've been seeing of supposed Nokia EOS hardware, only instead of a plastic construction, they showed a metal body for the handset. We wondered which, if either of these designs we might see in the final, commercial version of the hardware, but now a number of concerns have come to light that suggest this metal phone could be something else entirely. First up, a few new pics of this aluminum frame surfaced over the weekend, finally giving us a side view. The weird thing is, if we look at the button cut-outs, ...

You know it had to happen: no sooner do we finally start coming around to the idea of 1080p screens on smartphones – that maybe they're not completely overkill and can meaningfully contribute to a phone's specs – when now there's talk of handsets with even higher resolutions. According to some industry sources, we could start seeing devices arrive in 2014 with six-inch WQXGA screens: that's a resolution of 2560 x 1600. We're already familiar with such high-res displays, but in much larger sizes, like the 10-inch component on the Nexus 10. While a WQXGA screen that size still has a ...

Twitter's Vine has found itself becoming one of the bigger hits of 2013, and after iOS users getting all the fun of posting their short clips online for months, there's now an Android Vine release to get even more users in on the action. Despite the good times so far, Vine may have a bit of a fight in store for it, as some rumors suggest that Facebook is nearly ready to announce a big new feature for Instagram, bringing the same sort of short video support to the app. What we do know for sure is that Facebook has an event coming up this Thursday, where it's expected to announce a new ...

We've seen a big uptick in interest lately towards bringing a proper console-quality gaming experience to smartphone users. While the processing power has been there, the larger issue has been about control – touchscreens are fine for plenty of things, but traditional gaming ain't one of them. On the Android front, we've seen projects like NVIDIA's Shield attempt to meld console-style controllers with a smartphone to overcome those limitations. There's a similar movement taking place over on iOS, and that accessory pictured up above just might be one of the first Apple-certified ...
