Last September, I was standing outside a venue in New York City, talking with the man himself, Michael Fisher. We were in line for the Nokia Lumia 920 announcement, trying not to drool all over ourselves in anticipation of what I then believed would be the device of the 2012. Leaving the event and having every attempt to hold the device myself snuffed, I was a tad disappointed. Not only because I merely got to touch the display for a few seconds, but also because the device turned out to be just as fallible to the barrage of hype and rumors as any other device. When first announced, its ...

Ever since Symbian Belle first arrived on the 700 and 701, we've been wondering when Belle updates would become available to other recent-model Symbian phones. Nokia keeps a web page up that shows off some of the system's features, as well as contains the latest status news on these updates to existing hardware. Recently, those notes have been all over the place, including briefly claiming that Belle was already available for a few of the models in question. It's back to behaving now, and has been recently updated to include info on a few more phones. Nokia now claims that Belle will "soon ...

With its twelve-megapixel camera and imaging capabilities that rival stand-alone point-and-shoots, Nokia's N8 has been the cameraphone to beat since its introduction earlier this year. A recent rumor says that Nokia is working on a spiritual successor, with plans to get this new Symbian model out sometime in Q2 of next year. The big news for the phone's camera, at least according to these rumors, is that it will have a hardware optical zoom. The N8 already sacrificed thinness for its camera, so the bulk of an optical zoom has us concerned about just how thick this new model might end up. ...

While our anticipation of Nokia World at the end of the month is largely motivated by the expected reveal of the company's initial Windows Phone lineup, there's going to be plenty else taking place. A new rumor suggests that the first day of the conference, October 26, might be used to introduce Symbian Belle updates for existing Anna phones. Models like the 700 and 701 ship with Belle pre-installed, but any smartphone that initially shipped running Anna should be in the running for a Belle update of its own. That list includes models like the C7, E7, and N8. We haven't seen any pics or ...

We've been hearing for a while that the king of camera phones, the Nokia N8, is going to receive an update which will improve its camera even more. The refresh is supposed to add 30 fps video and continuous auto-focus, among other things. The update is open for beta testing and is applicable to Nokia N8 phones running Symbian Anna. It brings a ton of imaging-related features to the phone, such as UI improvements, more Settings, faster, improved red-eye removal and much, much more. These all come, of course, in addition to the highly anticipated 30fps video mode and continuous autofocus. If ...

It looked like Nokia was nearly ready to start sending out Symbian Anna updates to some of its smartphones yesterday, prepping its servers with the software for N8 and E7 models. We wondered, though, what about the C7 and C6-01? All four Symbians were supposed to be getting Anna sometime before the end of the month. Well, we've got good news for owners of those handsets, as well, with Nokia confirming the update is now available for all four smartphones. Symbian fans may already have their sights set on Belle, but those who haven't yet gotten a chance to use Anna will appreciate getting ...

New Nokia smartphones like the E6 come with the latest Symbian Anna pre-installed, but what about existing hardware? Earlier this summer, Nokia confirmed plans to get Anna updates out to the N8, E7, C7 and C6-01 sometime by the end of August. It looks like it will meet that deadline with time to spare, as reports indicate that Nokia's preparing to distribute the update for the N8 and E7 imminently. The Navifirm tool, which connects to Nokia's own servers to access firmware updates, reveals that Nokia has been loading its system with updates for every carrier and color variant of the N8 and ...

The good folks over at the Nokia Beta Labs are always cooking up something new and exciting and this time it's Live View, and augmented reality browser, a little bit in the vein of LG's ScanSearch available in the Marketplace for LG Windows Phone users. Upon launching the application, the smartphone will display real-time location information and points of interest based on the surrounding, overlaying the bits to the camera application. It is definitely a great way to discover places, points of interest using both location data as well as the real-time images of the surroundings. Check out ...

The Nokia N8 smartphone is very well known for its exceptional camera quality allowing the device to take fabulous pictures almost on par with professional cameras thanks to its Carl Zeiss optics. Nokia's mobile camera guru Damien Dinning was talking unofficially about the N8's camera and mentioned that the smartphone will be getting an update. The refresh will further improve the already great camera but this time in terms of video capturing as 30FPS would be added for smoother playback as well as continuous auto-focus. "There wil be an N8 specific update coming which will. You need the ...

After spotting the Nokia N8 in pink joining the other available colors for the smartphone -- black, silver, blue, orange, and green -- things became pretty clear that the Finnish manufacturer will be releasing a new color version. Nokia today announced the launch of the Nokia N8 flagship smartphone in pink. "Following the fantastic response to the range of colors we launched for the Nokia N8, it seemed a natural step to extend this choice. The Nokia N8 in pink complements the original line up well with its expressive, intense hue", said Rachael Bell, Senior Designer, Nokia. Everything else ...

The well-known Eldar Murtazin made yet another Nokia and Windows Phone 7 related tweet and according to the information he posted, models named W7 and W8 will be the Finnish company's first Windows Phone 7 powered smartphones. Murtazin also referenced Nokia Windows Phones last month when he tweeted about two Nokia Windows Phones on Chassis 1 and two on Chassis 2. This time, it's specific to the model, even though it's just a rumor at this time. This R category folder so far contains files on an HTC Mozart-like smartphone called the Nokia W7 while the W8 is comparable to Nokia's N8. The ...

Nokia's current flagship device, the N8, currently available in a range of colors was spotted today sporting a new pink color scheme. Nokia has yet to make an announcement regarding the new color which is not yet available on its online store. The color may be a special edition limited to specific locales or carriers. The N8s pink color joins the five currently available colors: black, silver, blue, orange, and green. Nokia has featured quite a number of pink handsets in its history, perhaps more than any other smartphone manufacturer. Nokia's N8 features a 640x360 Gorilla Glass AMOLED ...

The popular new version of Angry Birds called "Angry Birds Rio" is now available in the Nokia Ovi Store on the N8 smartphone. It costs $1.99 for the full version and there isn't a free "Lite" version available just yet (as was available for the original Angry Birds game). The video below shows you how to find the new game in the Ovi store on the Nokia N8 and then goes through a couple of the levels in Angry Birds Rio. For some reason there was a bit of lag during that first slingshot, but subseqent turns went very smoothly. Of course the N8 also supports multi-touch zooming and all of the ...

It may not be the Android-ification of the Symbian^3 UI that we spied on the Nokia N8 last month, but the upcoming PR 2.0 firmware has its own series of improvements to offer users of Nokia devices. NokiaCentral took a look at some of the changes that will make it into PR 2.0, giving us a preview of what's to come. One thing you should notice straight away about PR 2.0 is that page transitions have become faster and more responsive. When you swipe your finger to flip between screens, the software will keep right up with your movements. Speed improvements are a common theme amongst several ...

Despite the recent news of a Nokia-Microsoft collaboration, leading the smartphone manufacturer to begin producing Windows Phone 7 devices, Symbian doesn't look like it's going anywhere as an alternative OS for Nokia smartphones. While the company had been working on a next-gen Symbian^4, it decided to focus instead on implementing the sorts of changes it had in mind on the existing Symbian^3 platform. A product render used as a backdrop to a recent Nokia event now provides us with a glimpse of what the next of those Symbian^3 updates may be, showing a redesigned UI. You see the changes ...

If you were watching the Grammy Awards show last night, you might have been surprised to see a commercial from Nokia for their N8 smartphone. I certainly was. I can't remember the last time I saw a Nokia product advertised in the U.S. Regardless, the commercial is pretty cool and showcases the N8's fantastic camera and video recording capabilities. I'm not sure the actual quality of this phone comes across in the ad. What do you think? Check out the ad in its YouTube version below. Source: The Nokia Blog

The Nokia N8 -- which we recently unboxed and took a look at both the hardware and the software -- had its PR 1.1 firmware leaked last week somewhere in Italy, indicating at least its existence and stage in testing. Nokia announced today that it will soon start to roll out the 1.1 software update, which many expected for a January release, for the N8 -- and for the C6-01 for that matter -- but no other details were made public. While Nokia says will keep users posted on the update and the process, we found out from the leak, if the information is correct, that the new software version will ...

The Nokia N8 is of course running Nokia's Symbian ^3 operating system, and it's the first device with the new OS. The home screen is similar to older Symbian operating systems with two softkeys in the lower corners, and signal strength/battery life in the upper corners. The difference appears in the 3 swipe-able home screens that can contain an arrangement of custom icons or widgets. This is, of course, similar to Spb Mobile Shell and Android UIs, however in this implementation the background photo can be changed independently on each screen and does not move with each swipe. Text input is ...

We've just unboxed the Nokia N8 and gave you a quick hardware tour of the handset and it turns out that a firmware has been leaked and it's out there somewhere (currently in Italy). The firmware is PR 1.1 and, as you can see in the screenshot above, it's dated January 7, 2011, which means that it must be subject of heavy testing as we speak. Check out the video below and you'll notice the landscape orientation dialer with reference to which MyNokiaBlog thinks that it might be the reason for Nokia delaying the E7. Source: MyNokiaBlog

The Nokia N8 hardware design is really spectacular. It just looks fantastic coming out of the box. It's got an aluminum metal body with a 3.5" capacitive glass OLED screen, 0.3Mp front facing camera, MicroSD memory expansion slot, and 16Gb internal storage. In terms of processor speed, it's nothing terribly impressive at 680Mhz with 256Mb of RAM, however the 12 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens and Xenon flash really is something to marvel at. You've also got an HDMI port on the phone, and even an FM Transmitter for playing audio on an FM radio in the car.

The Nokia N8 has been around for a while, but we heard it was pretty good, so we thought we should check it out. The N8 comes in a fairly large square blue box. There are reflective foil highlight outlines of the device embossed on the box cover and inner layer. Opening the flip-top box reveals the gorgeous Nokia N8 smartphone, and beneath a plastic molded holder are a bunch of extras. You've got an AC Charger, nice headphones with hardware control buttons and microphone, MicroUSB cable, MicroUSB to female USB adapter, and MiniHDMI to full HDMI adapter. That last one is really nice to ...

Nokia announced today that it is in the process of releasing new, "green" editions of its C7 and N8 smartphones, featuring reduced packaging, efficient power supplies, and a collection of environment-related apps. The phones themselves aren't getting any changes as part of this eco-effort. To the company's credit, both are already engineered from relatively earth-friendly materials. Instead, Nokia's cutting back on packaging for the phones, using "just enough to protect the devices in transit." That spartan presentation continues with a new minimalist user guide, explaining how to get ...
