It may not be the Android-ification of the Symbian^3 UI that we spied on the Nokia N8 last month, but the upcoming PR 2.0 firmware has its own series of improvements to offer users of Nokia devices. NokiaCentral took a look at some of the changes that will make it into PR 2.0, giving us a preview of what's to come. One thing you should notice straight away about PR 2.0 is that page transitions have become faster and more responsive. When you swipe your finger to flip between screens, the software will keep right up with your movements. Speed improvements are a common theme amongst several ...

Despite the recent news of a Nokia-Microsoft collaboration, leading the smartphone manufacturer to begin producing Windows Phone 7 devices, Symbian doesn't look like it's going anywhere as an alternative OS for Nokia smartphones. While the company had been working on a next-gen Symbian^4, it decided to focus instead on implementing the sorts of changes it had in mind on the existing Symbian^3 platform. A product render used as a backdrop to a recent Nokia event now provides us with a glimpse of what the next of those Symbian^3 updates may be, showing a redesigned UI. You see the changes ...

The Nokia N8 represents Nokia's current flagship smartphone and we heard it was pretty nice, so we thought we should take a look. The N8 is very powerful and includes the latest Symbian ^3 operating system, but you may have heard that Nokia has recently committed to launching its future high-end smartphones with Windows Phone 7. The N8 could very well be a collector's item with it's Symbian operating system and compelling feature set, but maybe there's a reason Nokia has decided to go with Windows Phone 7 instead. If you were watching the Grammy Awards show last night, you might have been surprised to see a commercial from Nokia for their N8 smartphone. I certainly was. I can't remember the last time I saw a Nokia product advertised in the U.S. Regardless, the commercial is pretty cool and showcases the N8's fantastic camera and video recording capabilities. I'm not sure the actual quality of this phone comes across in the ad. What do you think? Check out the ad in its YouTube version below. Source: The Nokia Blog

The Nokia N8 -- which we recently unboxed and took a look at both the hardware and the software -- had its PR 1.1 firmware leaked last week somewhere in Italy, indicating at least its existence and stage in testing. Nokia announced today that it will soon start to roll out the 1.1 software update, which many expected for a January release, for the N8 -- and for the C6-01 for that matter -- but no other details were made public. While Nokia says will keep users posted on the update and the process, we found out from the leak, if the information is correct, that the new software version will ...

The Nokia N8 is of course running Nokia's Symbian ^3 operating system, and it's the first device with the new OS. The home screen is similar to older Symbian operating systems with two softkeys in the lower corners, and signal strength/battery life in the upper corners. The difference appears in the 3 swipe-able home screens that can contain an arrangement of custom icons or widgets. This is, of course, similar to Spb Mobile Shell and Android UIs, however in this implementation the background photo can be changed independently on each screen and does not move with each swipe. Text input is ...

We've just unboxed the Nokia N8 and gave you a quick hardware tour of the handset and it turns out that a firmware has been leaked and it's out there somewhere (currently in Italy). The firmware is PR 1.1 and, as you can see in the screenshot above, it's dated January 7, 2011, which means that it must be subject of heavy testing as we speak. Check out the video below and you'll notice the landscape orientation dialer with reference to which MyNokiaBlog thinks that it might be the reason for Nokia delaying the E7. Source: MyNokiaBlog

The Nokia N8 hardware design is really spectacular. It just looks fantastic coming out of the box. It's got an aluminum metal body with a 3.5" capacitive glass OLED screen, 0.3Mp front facing camera, MicroSD memory expansion slot, and 16Gb internal storage. In terms of processor speed, it's nothing terribly impressive at 680Mhz with 256Mb of RAM, however the 12 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens and Xenon flash really is something to marvel at. You've also got an HDMI port on the phone, and even an FM Transmitter for playing audio on an FM radio in the car.

The Nokia N8 has been around for a while, but we heard it was pretty good, so we thought we should check it out. The N8 comes in a fairly large square blue box. There are reflective foil highlight outlines of the device embossed on the box cover and inner layer. Opening the flip-top box reveals the gorgeous Nokia N8 smartphone, and beneath a plastic molded holder are a bunch of extras. You've got an AC Charger, nice headphones with hardware control buttons and microphone, MicroUSB cable, MicroUSB to female USB adapter, and MiniHDMI to full HDMI adapter. That last one is really nice to ...

Nokia announced today that it is in the process of releasing new, "green" editions of its C7 and N8 smartphones, featuring reduced packaging, efficient power supplies, and a collection of environment-related apps. The phones themselves aren't getting any changes as part of this eco-effort. To the company's credit, both are already engineered from relatively earth-friendly materials. Instead, Nokia's cutting back on packaging for the phones, using "just enough to protect the devices in transit." That spartan presentation continues with a new minimalist user guide, explaining how to get ...

There were more and more reports coming in from various parts of the world concerning the Nokia N8 and users claimed their devices mysteriously went dead with no chance of reboot, recharge or start-up. Nokia confirmed yesterday that there was a power management problem plaguing some of the N8 units and made a statement along with a video where Nokia's Executive Vice President Niklas Savander talks about the Nokia N8 quality. Faulty Nokia N8 units will be replaced under warranty as luckily the problem seems to affect only a part of the units shipped. Find the statement quoted below and head ...

While Nokia's flagship N8 smartphone received just a 5/10 in Engadget's review last month, it seems that the Symbian-powered handset was at least able to revive a Windows Phone 7-formatted microSD card that the publication's editor had allegedly been unable to save through other means. After reportedly trying to reuse a card that had already been integrated into his Samsung Focus' file system, editor-in-chief Joshua Topolsky found that no other products could read and thus reformat it, including cameras and Linux utilities. Until, that is, an N8 owner suggested attempting the format with ...
