Initially called the Nokia Camera, rebranded to Lumia Camera after the Microsoft acquisition, the application, in its Lumia Camera beta stage, has been added to the Windows Phone Store, should you want to join the beta program and check out new features before they hit the public version of the application. However, you'll have to rock a Lumia 930/Icon, Lumia 1520, Lumia 640, or Lumia 640XL phone powered by the Denim update, in order to download and install the app. Not to be confused with the Lumia Camera (sans beta) app, this version brings some features and improvements to the users ...

"Lumia 930, 1520 and Lumia Icon will get “Hey Cortana” voice activation as part of the Lumia Denim update", says the official wording from Microsoft. This feature would basically allow certain Denim-powered phones to be on the lookout for the "Hey Cortana" keyword, which would activate the functionality to further improve the user experience. This is based on chipset features which enable the phone to listen to certain keywords (in this case, "Hey Cortana") in order to trigger a feature. However, in the UK, the O2 Lumia 930 Denim update rollout has begun; strangely, the "Hey Cortana" ...

Before Microsoft took over Nokia's mobile division, we spent a good amount of time praising the the once cellphone giant for its efforts with the Lumia smartphone lineup. The Lumia designs were both bold and futuristic, but what really stood these smartphones apart from the competition is the enhanced camera experience that we began to test with devices like the Lumia 920 and the Lumia 820 a few years ago. The successors to these smartphones have been in the market for a few months now, and dubbed as the Lumia 930 and Lumia 830 respectively. We've already spent a good deal of time covering ...

Most new device launches go the same way: usually the press gets review units before they’re widely available, and we get to use them for a few days -or a week if we’re lucky- as we work on our review. Then press day arrives. The embargo on media coverage lifts, and everyone posts their reviews and videos at the same time. It’s a huge frenzy, commenters go nuts, and it’s a giant explosion of frantic opinion-sharing activity. For about … a day. And then it all goes away. Sure, there’s followup coverage as people find bugs and hidden features, but after that initial blast, not ...

Microsoft's Lumia Denim is probably one of the most anticipated Windows Phone updates since the inception of the operating system. On its own, Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 does a good enough job at setting Microsoft's mobile operating system on par with competition, but Lumia Denim takes a couple of steps further in differentiating Microsoft's hardware from even other Windows Phones. The list of updates that come with Lumia Denim is quite significant, but Microsoft felt the camera enhancements alone were important enough to give us a tour during our stay in Las Vegas for CES 2015. Our ...

CES 2015 is already starting to wind down, and though we've been able to check out a nice assortment of new products, there hasn't been much to share from the world of Windows Phone. Sure, we got those platform-agnostic Alcatel Onetouch Pixi 3 models, but nothing really high-end; anything like new Lumias will have to wait. Almost as if in a conciliatory gesture, Microsoft has decided to give us something to tide us over until its next major launch, and today announced plans to release new gold-hued special editions of the Lumia 830 and Lumia 930. Both the 830 and 930 will be coming out in ...

Now that the Nokia Lumia 830 is official as a supposed high-end smartphone for a low-end price, it's time to start comparing it to phones we already have recognized as true flagships in our full reviews. First up on our list of comparisons, the Lumia 930 / Icon, which we reviewed and called the best Windows Phones to date at the time. Now it's time to compare the battle-worn soldier to the new kid on the block, in Nokia Lumia 830 vs Nokia Lumia 930 / Icon. This result is disappointing, but most definitely an expected outcome. The Lumia 830 loses out in everything, so if you have the extra ...

For Verizon customers, it's the Windows Phone question of the year: Lumia Icon or One M8 for Windows? Both phones offer premium builds and powerful internals, both run Windows Phone 8.1, and both have their own software goodies to try to captivate customers – but which is the better phone overall? We tackle that question in our HTC One M8 for Windows vs Nokia Lumia Icon comparison video down below. Talking hardware, neither of these phones are small. But what they both are is sturdy and solidly built, for whatever you take that to mean. The HTC feels a bit better in-hand, if only ...

Though Nokia's high-end phones are well-known for their incredible cameras, it can always improve. It's looking to do that with the Lumia Icon, Lumia 930, and Lumia 1520 today, by adding camera-related features to the upcoming Windows Phone 8.1 update. These Lumia Cyan camera fixes have been detailed by now-Microsoft employee Juha Alakarhu in a Q&A. Low-light performance will be improved, which is a huge plus for some Lumia 1520 owners. Artificial noise will be reduced, and clarity will be made better, claims Alarkhu. Better colors and video quality are also on the list, but why ...

We all know the Nokia Lumia 930 as the international variant of our much-acclaimed Nokia Lumia Icon. We also know that this device isn't really available yet, as we should see its international launch very soon. What's interesting though, is that even though this is the latest and greatest Windows Phone in the market at the moment, it seems to also be ready for a price-cut before its official launch. Rumors say that the Lumia 930 will see a price drop from the €579 pre-order price that's currently available, to just €499, which is quite significant for a smartphone of its class. At the ...

The "flagship killer" that demands that you "NEVER SETTLE" breaks cover. The pioneer of the modern mobile browser shares his story. And at long last, Microsoft and Nokia finally consummate their love. We could have a feature segment, but with news this hot, do we really need one? Not with a guest like Stefan Constantinescu of TabDump to bring some flavor (and profanity) to the proceedings, that's for sure. A word on the language of this episode: we've recently ditched the "Clean" content rating that's been with us from the start of the Weekly, trading it in for Apple's ominous "Explicit" ...

One of the hallmarks of our review process is the comparison video, and one of our favorite comparisons to make is the cross-platform faceoff. That's especially true when the two competitors are powered by Android and Windows Phone: there are so many disparities to cover, so many philosophical differences to delve into, that it can be a bit daunting – but the payoff, whatever it is, is usually worth it. In today's comparison, that satisfaction comes in the form of surprise. Because the Icon, like most Nokia Lumia devices, is built largely to support its camera, we expected the Verizon ...

You'd wonder what the secret is for wireless charging to become ubiquitous. Everything about it is cool, from the fact that you simply place your phone over the pad, to the fact that it's a standard that works across platforms. Sadly the problem is that it hasn't really taken off over the last couple of years, and Nokia is finally planning to do something about it. The company's VP of Nokia UK & Ireland, Conor Pierce has confirmed that it'll start to push wireless charging seriously in the future, and that it'll begin with the launch of the Nokia Lumia 930. In the past you had to buy ...

Will Nokia announce the Lumia 930 at its press event tonight? One week ago, we would have answered that question with a solid “probably,” but more recent rumors have suggested that the 930 might be a no-show, and maybe only the 630 would be on the menu. We'll know for sure in just a matter of hours, but even if the 930 isn't on the slate tonight, we're bound to see Nokia reveal the phone in the relatively near future. While so far we haven't had much to look at while talking about all these Lumia 930 rumors, today we finally get to put a face to the name, as the first render of the ...

The April 2 Nokia event where we expect "#moreLumia" is basically part of the Microsoft Build conference starting today, and, according to both rumors as well as speculation, the world should expect the Lumia 630, alongside the higher-end Lumia 930 Windows Phone devices, powered by the latest iteration of the platform, 8.1. However, a recent report (based on an anonymous tip) claims that the rumored Lumia 930 will not be unveiled; instead, we should prepare to see only the Lumia 630. Another recent report claimed that on April 23 we should be able to get both the 630 and the 930 (in ...

There were a lot of rumors and leaks of Windows Phone 8.1, and its features, and on March 26 we've heard that Microsoft has allegedly finalized core development for the upcoming refresh. According to some recent reports, March 26 was also the day on which Microsoft's OEM partners have gotten their hands on Windows Phone 8.1. What does all this mean? First of all, phone makers can now develop and test firmwares; it also means that Windows Phone 8.1 devices should be just around the corner. WPCentral claims to have information on a certain April 23 date on which the first phones will become ...

Nokia's got a couple buns in the oven – and by “buns” we mean Windows Phone handsets, and by oven we mean, well, assembly line, we guess. But no matter how we're referring to them, phones like the Lumia 630/635 and Lumia 930 have just been itching to go public. Earlier we heard that Nokia might have its eye on an April 19 launch event, but just last week we picked up on a new rumor suggesting that the phones could debut quite a bit sooner, and might be unveiled right at the start of the month, on April 2. Sure enough, today Nokia starts sending out invitations to just such an April 2 ...

When it comes to Windows Phone news, as well as news of the latest Lumia smartphones from Nokia, there are two dates we've been keeping in mind: April 2, and April 19. The former is when Microsoft's Build conference gets underway this year, and sometime during the event (which runs though April 4), we're expecting Microsoft to make a big Windows Phone 8.1 announcement. The latter date is one we've heard rumored for a Nokia event, where it would presumably introduce its first native WP8.1 handsets. Now, however, it seems that those new Lumias may make their first public appearance a little ...
