One of the hallmarks of our review process is the comparison video, and one of our favorite comparisons to make is the cross-platform faceoff. That's especially true when the two competitors are powered by Android and Windows Phone: there are so many disparities to cover, so many philosophical differences to delve into, that it can be a bit daunting – but the payoff, whatever it is, is usually worth it. In today's comparison, that satisfaction comes in the form of surprise. Because the Icon, like most Nokia Lumia devices, is built largely to support its camera, we expected the Verizon ...

When, oh when, will the Nokia Lumia Icon finally launch? A couple weeks back we got what might be the biggest break in the phone's launch story to date, when a page on Verizon's test site not only revealed the phone's listing prematurely, but also confirmed that Icon name, marking a major shift in how we talk about Lumia phones. But as quickly as it was unearthed, that page vanished. We were hoping that a launch might soon follow, with rumors pointing to a possible January 14 date, but that day came and went without delivering any Lumia Icon. Today we wonder if we're once again right on ...

We've been waiting for the launch of the Lumia 929 for quite a while now, and last month something odd starting happening with the phone's name. First the phone's seemingly internal codename Icon was leaked – now, we're well used to such codenames coming out at the beginning of a phone's history, but usually we leave those behind as we focus on model numbers and launch names – so why was it popping up then, months after the 929 hit our radar? It didn't take long before the story started getting even more interesting, suggesting that Icon wasn't a codename at all, but how the phone ...

Just what use would an iris scanner be on a smartphone? When will 2K displays take over the smartphone world (and why should we care)? How exactly does one spell "Magotes," anyway? If these questions have ever crossed your worried minds -and even if they haven't- the second-to-last episode of the Pocketnow Weekly's 2013 season is right up your twisted alley, friend. But even if you're not interested in such tomfoolery, there's still plenty here to ping your pong. In this episode we talk headline-grabbing rumors like the Galaxy S 5 and wooden Moto X, yes - but we also spend a lot of time ...

Rumors surrounding the launch plans for Nokia's Lumia 929 have really been getting more interesting lately. They've been dragging around for a while now, as one missed guess at a launch date gets replaced by another. But now not only have we been talking about the possibility of Nokia delaying this model until next year, but that it might not even be released with that 929 moniker, and instead could drop numbers altogether in favor of the name Lumia Icon. It sounds like that theory's still in the running, but today we learn a little more about just when things might start happening. Last ...

Nokia's Lumia 929 sure is taking its sweet old time in actually making it to market. First rumors of a November launch fell through, and despite claims that the hardware might finally launch in December, we're halfway through the month with nothing to show for it. So, when is the Windows Phone handset finally going to hit stores? Today we hear the latest guess at a launch window, while also considering a surprising theory for how the handset might be named. Instead of December, this new theory pegs the phone's release date as Thursday, January 16. We're not sure exactly where this date in ...

Earlier today, while we were busy hanging with some of you fine folks on the latest episode of the Pocketnow Live, a lot was going down elsewhere. Our LG G Flex review was in the final polishing stages; our own Taylor Martin was kicking out some coverage on Motorola's mold-breaking budget wonder, the Moto G; and friend of the show Marques Brownlee was interviewing Dennis Woodside, CEO of Motorola Mobility. All that activity demands a followup, of course, and what better venue for an end-of-week wrapup than the Pocketnow Weekly podcast? We can't think of any, either. So whether you're here ...

It has been entirely too long since we got a fresh look at some Nokia Lumia 929 hardware. The phone's been taking its sweet time in getting here, and after missing all the projected November launch dates, we're really hoping it finally shows up sometime this month. We've been picking up bits and pieces of new info – like that recent rumor that the phone's codename may be Icon – but it's been nearly a month since we had any new imagery of the handset to gawk over. As we wait for word of the 929's availability, we've got a few new pics to check out today. Somehow this 929 for Verizon ...

This is going to be a quick one, with an FYI attached. The Verizon Nokia Lumia 929 codename is "Icon", according to @evleaks. Those interested in getting this phone on Verizon should expect "almost-Lumia-1520-like" specs, minus the huge screen. This means that, according to rumors, the Icon will pack a Snapdragon 800, have a five-inch 1080p OLED display, offer 2GB of RAM, and have a 20-megapixel PureView camera. As per when exactly the Icon will be available is anyone's guess. We first heard of Thanksgiving, then November 21, and, more recently, December. One thing is certain though: if ...

Leaks can go both ways: sometimes they're spot on, sometimes they miss, like the Verizon Nokia Lumia 929 leak that hinted the phone should become available on November 21. It didn't happen, but that's not going to stop leaks from pouring in. We're now looking at a "mid-to late December" release on Big Red, and the information comes from a leakster that is also claimed responsible for the picture below. This is allegedly the white version of the Verizon Nokia Lumia 929 (which will reportedly be a limited color option), snapped in real life, with the Verizon, 4G LTE, and Nokia branding, ...

A Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, five-inch 1080p screen, 2GB of RAM, and a 20-megapixel PureView camera, is what you should expect, if the rumors are true, to see on the upcoming Verizon Nokia Lumia 929 -- specs which are pretty much identical to the Lumia 1520, minus the one-inch-smaller display. We've seen a lot of leaks, rumors, and speculation and now we're hearing some more, this time, regarding a possible release date. November 21 -- this Thursday -- is what an anonymous tipster claiming to be a Verizon insider suggests. The tipster also claims that we'll see the Lumia 2520 on ...

Ever since the Nokia World event last month, we've been wondering what would become of those model we had heard rumored so much, and were expecting to see Nokia launch, but ended up being no-shows at the announcement itself. Those included both the Lumia 929 and Lumia 525 “Glee,” and lucky for us we get to check out some new signs of each this morning. The 929 shows up in some nice, clean pics, revealing the hardware from all angles. All the Verizon branding we've seen before is present, and we get some hands-on measurement of device dimensions, revealing a 10.5mm thick body. Look for ...

Despite the leaked render of the Verizon Nokia Lumia 929 from the beginning of October, the phone was nowhere to be seen at last week's Nokia World in Abu Dhabi. Still, it is believed to be, at the moment, a variant of some sort for the Lumia 1520 which was unveiled in the United Arab Emirates. The picture above, and the video embedded below, claim to feature the upcoming phone. As a Lumia 1520 variant, it will retain the Full HD resolution screen -- though in a slightly smaller form factor -- the speedy Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC, as well as the 20-megapixel camera, according to reports. ...

Apple's not the only one with big news coming soon, and in just a matter of hours, Nokia's throwing a Nokia World event in Abu Dhabi. There's a lot to cover here, so let's dive right in to the device that feels like it's the nexus of this announcement, the Lumia 1520. Well, it wasn't always the 1520 - not to us anyway. We've been talking about the general idea of a phablet-sized Lumia for a while, and back in August, that started taking shape as a phone codenamed Bandit. Before the month was out, we heard that Bandit might launch as the 1520, and our first look at fully-assembled hardware ...

Yesterday, we heard the name Lumia 1320, along with the note that the handset had been under development at Nokia as codename "Batman." We speculated a little about what sort of phone it might be, but not having anything to go on besides that name, our options were pretty limited. Today there's some new chatter about the 1320, but instead of helping to clarify the situation, we're left not being quite sure what to believe. First, we have that leaked image above, purporting to be the Lumia 1320. A couple things are weird about it, though: it looks exactly like the supposed 929 renders we've ...

It all started so simply; we'd seen smartphone after smartphone arrive with displays in the three or four-inch ranges, and larger tablets were clearly a different breed of device entirely. But then that middle ground, previously a no-phone's-land, started to see some activity. Maybe the first model to really get people talking about this form factor was the 5.3-inch first Galaxy Note, but since then we've seen dozens more arrive. Those haven't all been like the Note, which might be best described as a large phone, but have also come as models in the six-inch realm that felt more like small ...

Nokia's Lumia 929 sprung up on us out of nowhere a little over a week ago, showing the sort of home screen packed with extra Live Tiles that we expect to get from 1080p models running GDR3, like the Lumia 1520 phablet. Shortly after getting our first look at the phone's front, a rear shot seemed to reveal the presence of a 20-megapixel camera. That all had the 929 looking very much like it could be a variant of the 1520 itself, though maybe one in a slightly smaller package. Most recently, we've even heard about the phone's possible release date, with November 6 coming up as a possibility, ...

We just brought you the latest development concerning Nokia's six-inch 1520 phablet, showing the FCC its stuff, but that's far from the only Nokia model we've been tracking. A whole mess of new products are expected for next month's event, and while we can't say if these two will be joining them, this afternoon we get some new info on both the Lumia 929 (above) and the previously unnumbered model known only by the codename Glee. Supposedly, Glee will arrive as the Lumia 525, which certainly fits with the lower-end part of the description we've heard for that model; no word yet how the ...

That "Lumia 1820" may just be a pipe dream for now, but Nokia's got some other hardware that not only seems very much real, but looks nearly ready to launch. Last week, we saw the company start sending out save-the-dates for an October 22 event, where we'd presumably be hearing it announce such hardware. We've still got a month to go, but now Nokia's talking a little more about what it's got planned, sharing news of Nokia World in Abu Dhabi. The new teaser images, above and below, move from the barren sand dunes of last week's installment to the sunny shores of the Persian Gulf. The ...

We then talk about the first CyanogenMod phone to reach the market, the Oppo N1. BlackBerry is next as the company seems to have a buyer, but more with the idea of helping the company and not tearing it apart, aside from the news of the cross-platform BBM hitting a delay. Then we go through the rumors of a Nokia Lumia 929 phablet. We end today's show talking Microsoft's launch of the Surface 2 and new Surface Pro. All this and more after the break. Stories: - ...

Over the weekend we've seen a leaked press render allegedly depicting the Nokia Lumia 929, which is expected, as per the report, to land on Verizon's network soon. Today we're taking a look at what is claimed to be the back of said device, in its black color flavor. Aside from the Verizon and 4G LTE logos printed on the bottom, there's nothing really interesting, aside from the 20MP call-out for the camera. It completes the Nokia, PureView, and Zeiss branding, and it seems to confirm previous rumors of the phone's imaging capabilities -- which seem to match those on another rumored device, ...

Yes, folks, no weekend goes by without a new leak, and Nokia seems to be the target lately. What we see above is reportedly the Nokia Lumia 929, which, according to the leak, will arrive in both white and black on Verizon's line-up this year. In case you need a reminder, we've already seen a Verizon-branded Lumia device from China, and, at that time, we thought it was a Lumia 1520, or a variant of some sort. So, the image above might, or might not, be depicting the same device as the one below, from China. In any case, we're looking at a phone with GDR3, since there are more Live Tiles on ...
