Windows Phone build 8779 popped up on July 6 on NaviFirm without any specific details, as an update to grace some of the Nokia Windows Phones after the Tango refresh. Now the Finnish manufacturer is confirming software updates for three of its Lumia devices, namely the 610, 710 and 900. The Lumia 610 will get firmware version 1066.0000.8779.12201 which brings enhanced sensitivity for proximity sensor performance and improved sound level for alarm tone during voice calls. The Lumia 710 will receive version 1600.3031.8779.12180 with Internet sharing and flip to mute while the Lumia 900 ...

If it's not one thing, it's another. No matter how great the latest smartphone to arrive sounds on paper, spend enough time actually using it, and you'll always end up finding something that bugs you. It might be a problem with the build quality, or some unintuitive software, but users will always find something to complain about. FixYa's been keeping track of the complaints it hears regarding several popular models, giving us a look at some of the top user-reported issues. In the Android camp, we've got the brand-new Galaxy S III, as well as the Galaxy Nexus. For both models, the ...

Way back at the start of 2012, we heard some rumors about a Nokia Lumia 910. At the time, the prevailing theory was that this was essentially just another 900, but one intended either for release in Europe or another US carrier while AT&T enjoyed exclusive access to the original 900. Well, that didn't exactly work out as expected, and we've since seen the 900 arrive internationally while nothing's yet popped-up on the likes of T-Mobile. After keeping a low profile for several months, the Lumia 910 is coming back to our attention now, once again raising question about just what it is. ...

Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 event last week managed to answer plenty of questions about the operating system, including finally putting to rest the issue of updates for current handsets. While no existing models will transition to WP8, we learned that some of these models would be seeing Windows Phone 7.8, instead. In preparation for those updates to start arriving, Microsoft has put up a short page informing users of what they can expect, and prepared a video demonstrating how the new UI will appear on the Nokia Lumia 900. If you were hoping beyond hope that WP7.8 might include a few WP8 ...

When we learn about smartphone bugs, they usually fall into just one of a few categories. There might issues with wireless connectivity, or maybe the phone seems to not be managing its battery life very well. The Lumia 900, though, is starting to get a reputation for bugs that are a bit outside the ordinary, if not downright weird. First we had the phone's display going all purple when users dialed-down the brightness; Nokia managed to fix that one in a software update. The latest head-scratcher of a bug has users discovering that their phones seem convinced they're in Akron, Ohio. It's ...

We still may have several months to go until the first Windows Phone 8 hardware starts arriving, ready to run the new platform, but what are the prospects looking like for upgrades coming to existing gear, bringing them up to the just-announced Windows Phone 7.8? According to Nokia, we may not have that long of a wait at all, with the Lumia 900 getting WP7.8 in what could be just a few weeks. Nokia's US Twitter account responded to a question about Lumia 900 WP7.8 availability by saying that the update is "rolling out in the coming weeks". While a literal interpretation of that response ...

Just over a month ago, Nokia announced that hope was in sight for owners of the Lumia 900 who had been complaining about purple-tinged screens, visible when they turned their phones' brightness down low. While news of an update that would resolve this issue was great, the company didn't have any ETA on when such a release might be ready to go. Today Nokia announces that the update is indeed ready for prime time, and will be first be hitting 900 owners on AT&T in the States. That problem with the purple tint to the display is probably the most noticeable issue this update addresses, but ...

Nokia has updated its Maps application bundled with Lumia Windows Phones to version 2.o.21.304. The new version of the application is more social and it allows you, for instance, to add a photo to a place description and leave a relevant review directly from your Nokia Lumia. You can also sync your favorite places with maps.nokia.com, which makes them available online or on other platforms in case you have an account (Windows Phone, Symbian, MeeGo). You can also pin stuff to the home screen so if you have a Nokia-made Windows Phone we advise you to update your Maps client. Source: Nokia

Two nights ago, we told you about a new limited edition Batman Nokia Lumia 900 that would be arriving to help promote the upcoming release of The Dark Knight Rises. At the time, we had little more than a picture Nokia had tweeted of the handset to go on, other than the impression that it looked pretty cool. Now the rest of the puzzle has started coming together, and we've learned plenty of additional details about how the phone will be released and what you can do to get one. The advertising campaign for the phone has begun, letting us know that availability will be starting right at the ...

I’ve recently learned that there are two things about being a mobile-phone reviewer. The first thing: you get to handle awesome gadgetry days or weeks ahead of its official release date, and you’re not just allowed to use the heck out of it; you need to, in order to do your job. That’s the awesome thing. The other, less-awesome thing: you eventually have to give it all back. “Empty Nest” is a recurring column discussing what I miss -and what I don’t- about the devices I’ve had to return. ___ The Nokia Lumia 900 review unit I just sent back came to my door under somewhat ...

It's not a typo as many would have thought. O2 Germany confirmed it on Twitter that it is no mistake, the Nokia Lumia 900 with 32GB (the white variant) indeed exists and it will most probably land on the carrier soon. Still, there is a thin chance of this to be a mistake because if it turns out to be true, many owners of 16GB variants of the Lumia 900 across the globe (and especially on AT&T in the U.S.) will be disappointed. Instead, we should be happy for our fellow Windows Phone fans in Germany; still, they don't have an exact availability date and pricing yet. Those who passed on ...

When it comes to marketing tie-ins that seem just too big to resist, second only to the Olympics might be the summer Hollywood blockbuster. Just as we're seeing Olympic-themed phones going up for sale, there's also going to be a limited edition Lumia 900 released by Nokia just in time for The Dark Knight Rises. Nokia already had a very limited-edition Batman-themed Lumia 800 available, but with that one now gone, this 900 could be your only chance to snag an official Batman smartphone. Unfortunately for Batman fans in the US, the only markets we've heard of that are currently slated to see ...

Sorry folks, it's not available in the U.S.! With that one now out of the way we will remind you that Nokia Reading is the Finnish manufacturer's digital reading app and library for Windows Phone with e-book reading feature as well as RSS reader functionality which even allows you to pin publications to the home screen. Russia, U.K., Germany, Italy, France and Spain were rumored to be among the first regions to get the application and it is now available in the Marketplace's Nokia Collection section on Lumia 900, 800, 710, and 610 Windows Phones. If you have one of the aforementioned ...

Nokia appears to be truly committed to Windows Phones and while the hardware capabilities are standardized over OEMs, the Finnish manufacturer is further differentiating itself from the others with the help of dedicated applications, like the Creative Studio from the end of March. Furthermore, a "Camera Extension" will be launched for the Lumia line-up which will integrate with the Camera application of Windows Phone, but with added features. These features will bring no less than four camera modes: Smart Group Shot, Action Shot (burst mode with about eight shots), Panoramic (stitching ...

If you haven't noticed, AT&T has really turned up the heat in advertising its latest smartphone heavyweights. Now feeling the pressure from two other iPhone-carrying competitors, it's working hard to maintain a diversified smartphone portfolio, and it's doing a pretty good job of it, too. In line with that goal, AT&T has been heavily marketing its version of the HTC One X, as well as the Nokia Lumia 900. Of course, those of us who make the mobile industry our occupation, hobby, or obsession know the differences between these two high-end devices, but most people don't. So if you're ...
