Smartphone names, as a rule, are pretty awful. Some manage better than others, yet for every iPhone 5, there's another HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE. There a number of things a company can do to make things work, including keeping things simple, using descriptive terms where appropriate, and making it clear where devices fall as part of a larger lineup. Nokia's been skating around a real promising idea with its Lumia models, ditching a lot of the confusing branding we see from other manufacturers and giving each device a simple number. I've sure I've mentioned it before on a few occasions, ...

Then Ubuntu takes the stage as it apparently will reach Nexus smartphones in a week.  Then we go through some Nokia Lumia leaks, which while not hot, make it an interesting case for their push to cheaper Windows Phones. Nokia's definitely got some new Lumia models coming up; we've heard both a lot of code names as well as seen a bunch of model numbers. What we haven't had much of is actual imagery of these models. Now Dutch carrier KPN has a new ad out that reveals what just might be one of these upcoming Lumias. While the ad also clearly shows a yellow 920, at the very beginning there's a model that's quite unusual. With its curved corners, off-center headphone jack, and that camera arrangement, it's most reminiscent of the Lumia 822 on Verizon. That doesn't make a lot of sense here, though, since the ...

The Holidays are now behind us but that doesn't mean OEMs and carriers are not prepping other promotions, like this one, which will reportedly be a Verizon offer for Valentine's Day. There are no specific pricing or availability details attached but the report claims both of the phones mentioned below will go for less than $50 on contract. The Nokia Lumia 822 will be, according to the report, available in red, as pictured above. The phone is currently being offered for $49.99 on a two-year contract and comes in black, grey and white. We've reviewed the Lumia 822 in December so give that a ...

The Galaxy S III's barely old enough to warrant an After The Buzz episode, but we're already talking about the Galaxy S IV. In any other venue, that would be a sign of jumping the shark; on the Pocketnow Weekly, it's just business as usual. Tune in for our best speculation on what Samsung might include in its next sensational superphone, from unbreakable screens to bone conduction. Then keep on listening for an extended debate about the merits of Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 versus iOS, drilling down into their UIs and design philosophy. Finally, after some extended talk about how useful ...

AT&T's Lumia 820 is as close as American buyers can get to the stock midrange Windows Phone 8 experience Nokia envisioned when it announced its new smartphone line. Its hardware is indistinguishable from the international version of the device, bearing no trace of the heavy-handed physical customizations that mark the other Lumia 8xx carrier variants we've seen. We recently reviewed each of those spiritual contemporaries, the Lumia 810 for T-Mobile and the Lumia 822 for Verizon Wireless, and now it's time we turned our focus to the baseline model. We've already compared it with ...

SO MANY LUMIAS. We don't know about you, but that's what's been going through our minds recently. Here at Pocketnow, our familiarity with the midrange Lumia 8xx series has skyrocketed over the past few weeks. We've given the full-review treatment to the Lumia 810 for T-Mobile USA, launched a new review format with the Lumia 822 for Verizon Wireless, and now we've got a new mid-tier Lumia in our hot little hands: a Nokia Lumia 820 for AT&T. We already unboxed this unit last week, taking you on a little hardware tour before promising more videos "in the next few days." Those days have ...

Watch today's Pocketnow Daily as we go through the recent rumors of the Galaxy S IV landing an unbreakable screen next year. Then we talk Nexus 4 and LG's inability to keep up with the market demand. The Nokia Lumia 822 then takes the spotlight as we talk about our full review coverage. Then we talk about SwiftKey and how its new service in beta called SwiftKey Flow will make it even better. We end today's show talking about T-Mobile's confirmation that they'll be selling Apple products as of 2013. All this and more after the break. Links: - Samsung Galaxy S IV Coming In April 2013, ...

We were all given a bunch of exciting stuff to drool over following the Windows Phone 8 reveal back in October. In the avalanche of information about a fundamental change to the kernel, new hardware support, additional features and new UI enhancements, it was a given that a few things would slip through the cracks. Things like enterprise support, remote device management, Kid's Corner ... and a new utility called Data Sense. Data Sense is a Microsoft-developed app intended to help users reduce overage charges incurred by using too much cellular data. It's also presumably attractive to ...

Microsoft kick-starts the smack-talk machine, which blows up in its face just as Nokia sells its own headquarters. The Lumia 822 gives us an excuse to launch a brand-new review format, while a Nexus 4 trade lets us take a post-review look at Google's latest smartphone. The iPhone 5S breaks its cover -maybe- while the Nexus 10 gives everyone a reason to care about big Android tablets - again, maybe. Rumors of a new 1080p device from LG get the speculation bonfire going again, but a cool bucketful of Google Play-colored cold water got us back on track. And, of course, it wouldn't be a ...

Like its magenta-hued Lumia 810 cousin, the Lumia 822 is a custom build of Nokia's midrange Lumia 820 for an American carrier. Unlike its blocky T-Mobile USA companion, though, the 822 packs LTE support into its redesigned frame to accomodate the needs of its host, the much-larger Verizon Wireless network. The 822 marks not just Nokia's slice of a Windows Phone resurgence on America's largest carrier, but the first significant Nokia phone of any kind to land on Verizon in quite some time. In the absence of CDMA-friendly versions of either the Lumia 900 or Lumia 920 on Big Red, it also ...

You can create ringtones for your Windows Phone 8 but if you have one of the newer Lumia phones from Nokia, like the Lumia 920, Lumia 820 (and its Lumia 810, Lumia 822 variants) you might be interested in checking out this Ringtone Maker application from the company that branded your phone. It is available in your Nokia Collection (as well as accessible via the link below) and, as the description states, it will help you create ringtones. You can do so by using music on your phone which can be saved as a ringtone by opening the app and selecting the MP3 file. Of course you can trim the ...

The Nokia Lumia 920 has been getting all the media love since its unveiling several months back, mostly at the expense of its less-remarkable Lumia 820 sibling. But much as T-Mobile USA did with the Lumia 810 we recently reviewed, Verizon Wireless asked Nokia to make a customized variant of the "littler Lumia" for itself. The result: the Nokia Lumia 822, an LTE-packing Windows Phone 8 device with a somewhat homely design, but lots of features to call its own. We're in the midst of giving the 822 the quick-review treatment, and if you haven't seen it yet, head on back to our unboxing and ...

We've already reviewed one variant of Nokia's midrange Lumia 820 -the Luma 810 for T-Mobile USA- but there's enough different on both the inside and the outside of Verizon Wireless' variant that we thought we'd take another dip into the mid-tier Windows Phone 8 pool. The 822 is a curvier, thicker, but lighter take on the Lumia 820, with a design that summons images of a pebble when viewed from behind, and whose front side packs a little more "chin music" than we're used to. It runs the latest version of Windows Phone 8, projecting it onto a 4.3-inch ClearBlack AMOLED display. It's powered ...

As we're moving further and further into November, Windows Phone 8 pre-orders are turning into shipped handsets, and phones are slowly but surely working their way onto retail shelves. The latest availability news comes from T-Mobile and Verizon, both of which are stepping-up their WP8 games this week. We looked at the situation with Verizon last week, upon getting word of just when its WP8 pre-orders would ship. Those should have gone out as of yesterday, and now Verizon is talking about the start of full-blown sales. Beginning tomorrow, you'll be able to purchase the Nokia Lumia 822 and ...
