When HTC made its new Windows Phone 8 lineup official last week, one of the first thoughts to cross our minds when seeing all those bright, bold colors and eye-catching designs was how Nokia-esque the Windows Phone 8X and 8S appeared. Well, apparently we weren't alone, as now at least one tipster is claiming that Nokia is gearing-up to launch a legal volley at HTC, with the hopes of preventing sales for at least one of its new models due to allegations of copying Nokia's look. What PC-Tablet calls an "internal reliable source" says that Nokia thinks HTC's 8X looks too much like the Lumia ...

Last week, in the midst of a Microsoft news explosion, I posted a piece on why you might consider the HTC Windows Phone 8S over its bigger, more-advanced counterpart, the 8X. My principal argument was centered around the fact that though the 8X offers more headline-worthy features and a much more robust spec sheet, the 8S features attributes some might find even more compelling. That's not a condition limited to HTC's new "signature Windows Phone 8 devices," though. There's evidence of this trend all across the smartphone landscape, with manufacturers delivering more and more ...

This time on the Pocketnow Weekly: SO MANY NEWS. "It's been quite a week" is something of a tired phrase when it comes to mobile technology, and we've used it, verbatim, for the past month or so -- because it's true. From Windows Phone 8 to Android to iOS 6 to ... heck, even BlackBerry had some news this week. We did our best to get to most of it on the podcast, but there's only so much time in a morning, especially when some of the news is so finely detailed. Tune in to this week's Pocketnow Weekly podcast for in-depth discussion of HTC's new Windows Phone 8 handsets, new Android phones ...

HTC just announced their Windows Phone 8 entries for the fall, and you may have already seen our hands-on video of the two devices, but how do these compare with Nokia's Lumia 920 and 820 that were announced a earlier this month? Well, both HTC's Windows Phone 8X and 8S come in a variety of bright colors.  They feel great in the hand with the soft-touch unibody finish.  The styling of both the 8X and 8S is quite impressive and they really stand out when you look at other black slabs on the market.  But Nokia's got the bright colors and gorgeous design too, so really you have to look at ...

HTC has made a couple of bold moves today with their launch of the Windows Phone 8X and 8S. Surely this isn't an easy market for them with the Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 just around the corner, but I must admit that these new HTC smartphones do deserve your attention. HTC made a lot of talk about how they pushed design in their press event today. Now even though design may not be much for many of you, in a platform like Windows Phone where differentiation is tough, design is everything. Nokia has done a great job in making the Lumia a gorgeous phone, but I must admit that both the One X and ...

One September 5th, we heard from Nokia that the Lumia 820 would feature removable battery covers that are available in a number of different colors, but that you'll also be able to get Qi wireless charging compatible covers also in a number of color options.  The wireless charging shells will be made from PC/ABS plastic and will be available in matte white, yellow, black, red and cyan. Today Nokia reveals yet another type of battery cover for the Lumia 820 that includes built-in rubberized corners which will help protect the phone when thrown across a room (or dropped accidentally).  ...

When I first proposed this article, it was with mixed emotions. I almost bagged the whole idea, in fact. More than once. The road to this little editorial was fraught with more wishy-washy back-and-forth double-talk than (choose any candidate) in the (choose any political race) of (choose any year). Here's my problem: for much of its twelve-year history, Pocketnow was a Microsoft-centric website, a bastion of highly devoted fans of the Windows Mobile platform. Much of that reader base remains, and those folks are certainly the most vocal component of our comment sections. Most of the ...

We know something about slow news weeks. For much of the summer, that's what the tech news cycle felt like: waiting for promised events and products, attending the occasional (and awesome) product launch, but always looking forward to the "coming months." Well, that month has finally come, and it's called September. Hot on the heels of IFA in Berlin, a bevy of companies -Apple, Nokia, Samsung, and Motorola- all hosted events of their very own, unleashing a slew of hot new hardware devices on the public. Tune in to this week's Pocketnow Weekly podcast for a boatload of iPhone 5 discussion, ...

Yes, the iPhone 5 is all the rage right now, and the iPhone 5 Event video was just posted for public viewing, but many of you are finding last week's Nokia Lumia 920 announcement more interesting.  If you missed the original September 5th live stream of the event, last week Nokia has posted the full announcement video online as well.  We were there too and have some other coverage that you might want to check out again if you haven't already.  See below for the full Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 event video (it does not require Quicktime) and let us know what you think in the ...

There's no better way to celebrate the launch of a new music service, than with Music. Nokia has just announced their availability of Nokia Music in the United States, and their way of saying hello is with a concert led by Green Day. The event will take place at Irving Plaza in New York City on September 15th, but sadly there's a catch. This is not a public event. If you want to spend some time with Nokia and celebrate, you'll have to enter a contest via Facebook, and win obviously. Green Day wants this to be a fan-based event, so those that do the best job in promoting the concert all ...

Ready for some new smartphones at Verizon? A couple screenshots have just leaked of Verizon's device management system, showing both the arrival of one of Nokia's new Lumia handsets, as well as the rumored HTC 1080p Android. Yesterday, Nokia announced the Lumia 820 and 920, the company's first Windows Phone 8 handsets. Now, both white and gray variants of the Lumia 822 show up in Verizon's system; presumably, that's the designation for the CDMA version of the 820. It's just a shame there won't be more color options available to Verizon users but those two neutral tones; at least they'll be ...

As you may already know, Nokia announced two new Windows Phone 8 devices this morning; the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820. We got our first real-life in-person look at the two devices today as well.  Check out the video below to see a few demos of both the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 with a special guest appearance by Windows Phone celebrity Ben Rudolph. The main announcement revolved around the Nokia Lumia 920 with its "PureView" optical image stabilization camera.  It's not the 41 megapixel "PureView" camera that we know from the Nokia 808, but "PureView" isn't supposed to be about megapixels, ...

It's a tough time to be an underdog. Any smartphone company that didn't do their best to succeed in the past five years, is either extinct (Palm), purchased (Motorola), or going crazy trying to draw attention to themselves this holiday season. This has become the Nokia story for the past 18 months. Today's launch of the new Nokia Lumia line-up has left me with some mixed feelings, and I did notice that the rest of the crowd wasn't as impressed as Nokia expected them to be. It's really hard to be wowed by any product these days, and sadly, that's what it takes for any device to break ...

With all the teasing Nokia's been up to lately, making jabs at Samsung, and now this morning, at Android in general, it really needed to follow-through with the kind of announcement that was worthy of such boasting. Luckily, Nokia was ready to go with just the hardware we've been hearing rumored, unveiling its Lumia 820 and Lumia 920 Windows Phone 8 handsets. After a bit of a late start, Nokia slowly got down to business with CEO Stephen Elop taking the stage, discussing the company's rise in the Windows Phone ecosystem and its role in helping the platform find new users in developing ...
