Nokia entering the Windows Phone game, while waved-off by some, is applauded by many and the first two devices to come from the Espoo-based company running the Redmond-made platform are enjoying great popularity and feedback from the market.
However, by the time Nokia Windows Phones reach the Chinese market — which recently became the largest mobile market on the planet — in the second half of 2012, the Finnish phone maker will be definitely facing fierce competition. Windows Phones made by prestigious manufacturers like Samsung and HTC will give Nokia a hard time on [...]
According to different reports, Nokia is pushing out several updates for its dedicated navigation application shipping on all Windows Phones made by the Espoo-based company. We are expecting offline navigation to be included but the first minor update doesn’t seem to bring it.
It looks like there is an update which bumps the version numbers to 126.96.36.1994 and there is also an update which is numbered 188.8.131.52. We are still waiting for that full offline support but if you have a Nokia Windows Phone and got one update or even both, let us know in the comments if you notice [...]
More than once, we’ve heard rumors claiming that Nokia’s Lumia 800 would be gracing AT&T’s LTE network someday in the near future; the first whispers of this arrangement arrived in early November, and more recently we’ve heard that testing of an LTE-enabled 800 is underway at both AT&T and Verizon. So far, though, this news has relied heavily on the contributions of unnamed sources who haven’t been providing much in the way of corroboration. Now, though, it looks like Nokia has done the work for us, and the latest 800 software reveals hints of [...]
Windows Phone users know this from the very early days: OEMs have special categories in the Windows Phone Marketplace where they aggregate applications and goodies for users of their phones.
LG, Samsung and HTC all have their own Marketplace categories and now Nokia has secured its own, called Nokia Collections. Nokia Windows Phone owners no longer have to search for apps released by Espoo; instead, when opening the Marketplace, there should be a special category where all device/make-specific software should be found. The images above are reportedly snapped off of the French [...]
Nokia recently acknowledged the problems some of its users rocking a Lumia 800 Windows Phone are experiencing in terms of poor battery life and, aside from telling people how to find out if their phone is affected, Espoo also promised a fix.
According to a memo received by Italian carrier 3 Italia, there will be a software update pushed out and available on January 18 to address the issue. The memo refers to Cyan and Magenta variants of the Lumia 800 but if you want to find out whether you are going to need the refresh, dial ##634#, go to Battery Status and see if the full [...]
The Nokia Lumia 800 Windows Phone, just like its MeeGo-powered twin, the N9, is available in Black, Cyan and Pink. This could soon change as new colors were tipped by the phone-maker with the occasion of a Windows Phone showroom organized by Microsoft France.
The exact colors to complement the existing flavors are not yet known; they will largely depend on the market but, as you can see in the image above, a magenta, white and a yellow version are considered as possible candidates. The fresh Lumia 800 Windows Phones should hit the market in a few months so we can expect new [...]
Documents published by the FCC tell us all sorts of things about smartphones. Sometimes, they alert us to the existence of a new model, and other times act as confirmation for some hardware we’ve already heard rumored. Then there are the cases where we’re already very familiar with a phone, but seeing it show up at the FCC lets us know about the status of plans to introduce the phone to the US. That’s the case with the latest handset to grace the agency’s halls, with Nokia’s Lumia 800 putting out a full spread.
With the 800 already available [...]
The Nokia Lumia 800 has a non-user-replaceable battery and, while Windows Phone does a great job at maintaining a relatively good battery life, some Lumia 800 users were complaining about poor battery life on the handset.
Nokia has acknowledged the problem and has promised to deliver a fix which will remedy the issue. Thankfully it has to do with a software bit so the problem can be easily solved but those who don’t want to wait for the fix — coming early next year — can ask for a replacement phone. Diving in the Diagnostics Tool by dialing ##634# allows you to [...]
We’ve already heard a number of reports of phones running Windows Phone Tango builds currently undergoing testing. Looking at rumors of which future Windows Phone features might arrive when, it’s possible that the platform will finally get LTE support with this release. It doesn’t take too far of a walk to wonder that if there’s already software with support for LTE devices under testing, what about the phones themselves? A new report says that Nokia has just such an LTE handset undergoing evaluation on both AT&T’s and Verizon’s LTE [...]
Watch this week’s Windows Phone View as we wrap-up all this week’s good and bad inside the world of Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform. In today’s show we begin by talking about the launch of the Nokia Lumia 710. We later cover why we know that T-Mobile will be the first US Carrier to sell it. In our week’s coverage we go through Adam’s recent Xbox LIVE game review and Dan Webster’s Window’s Phone App Round-up. We then talk about the possibility of NFC on current Windows Phone handsets, and we end the good section with some talk about [...]
Nokia revealed two weeks ago that it would be addressing user concerns over the Lumia 800’s battery life with a series of two updates for the phone. The first-such release was announced for December, with the second update on-target for January. True to its word, Nokia has just announced availability of that first update for the Lumia 800, including improvements to the phone’s charging system.
It’s interesting to see Nokia tackle charge-management issues with this release, as its previous statement had it looking like those improvements would be part of the [...]
Microsoft’s giant Windows Phone it put up in New York City was pretty darned impressive, using movable video walls to construct a smartphone that towered above the crowd. There’s more than one way to make a giant smartphone, though, and for the promotional push Nokia’s running for its Lumia models in Hong Kong, the company built a giant WP7 handset of its own this time made out of other smartphones.
Altogether, it took 550 phones to make this one giant… well, it’s a little large to still be called a handset, we suppose. Sure, it might not be as [...]
If you’re a fan of the Nokia Lumia 800 — or just need to have the phone after the spectacular show Nokia made in London painting the Millbank Tower all Lumia — you might be interested to know that the black, SIM-free version of the phone is now available online in the U.K.
It goes for £369.00 without taxes (around $580) and it is available as of now over at our friends at Clove. You can also try and import it to the U.S. if you fell in love with the phone after our review, where it received a 4/5.

Last week we’ve heard of Nokia’s major plans for another marketing kick, this time in London, to promote its main Windows Phone, the Lumia 800. Make no mistake, the phone hijacked London’s Millbank Tower in show of lights and projections.
Deadmau5 (Joel Thomas Zimmerman) had a great performance and the Millbank Tower was all dressed up in lights, 4D projections and other high-tech stuff. The whole tower collapsed (not the building itself Heaven forbid, but the projections were emulating that) and then later on revealed a huge Nokia Lumia 800. Check out the [...]
Watch this week’s Windows Phone View as we wrap-up everything that’s Good and Bad inside the world of Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform. In today’s show we begin by talking about the Nokia-Microsoft partnership and their device releases planned for 2012. We later go through the positive sales results that the Nokia Lumia 800 has gotten recently in the UK. We cover our full review of the device and what you should expect if you make it your next handset. We then go through the release of the AT&T Variant of the HTC Titan, the European launch of the LG E906 [...]
There is no doubt that the Nokia Lumia 800 is a real success in the U.K. — contrary to some analysts’ predictions — as the device sold out. If you were waiting for the cyan variant of the phone, Three U.K. has got you covered.
According to a recent carrier tweet, the Lumia 800 Windows Phone in cyan flavor has hit the stores yesterday. Interestingly the carrier’s webpage doesn’t feature the cyan variant — only the black one — so if you must have the funnier color variant you’ll have to head down to a Three U.K. store and grab one [...]
Despite some concerns that UK sales of Nokia’s Lumia 800 wouldn’t meet expectations, the Windows Phone handset’s launch has been going over swimmingly. Nokia’s not about to rest on its laurels, though, and is planning to drum-up interest in the smartphone with the help of what sounds like it’s going to be quite the epic audio/visual event.
After dark on this coming Monday, November 28, Nokia will flip the switch on what it’s calling Nokia Lumia Live. The company is basically taking a skyscraper and turning it into one giant visual effect; that [...]
One of Nokia’s first Windows Phones, the Lumia 800, went on sale in the U.K. on November 17. While analysts have chimed in to predict lower-than-predicted phone sales — previous guesses were roughly around two-million — Nokia is happy about “an excellent start” in the U.K.
“Based on earliest data the sales start of the Lumia 800 is the best ever first week of Nokia smartphone sales in the U.K. in recent history. By our measures, we have gained significant smartphone sell-out share in the channels in which we are operating in the U.K.”, [...]
During our review of Nokia’s Lumia 800, we noted that the phone’s battery seemed respectably decent, though a far cry from outstanding. While we weren’t left with too many concerns about the phone having enough juice to make it through the day, Nokia has been been hearing from other 800 owners who just really aren’t satisfied with the handset’s battery life. In what sounds like good news for everyone, that feedback has now prompted Nokia to plan for a couple of updates targeted at curbing excessive power consumption.
The first should be made [...]
After the Nokia Lumia 800 Windows Phone went on sale in the U.K. on November 17, the manufacturer tweeted that it loves “the Lumia 800 reception in the UK”. Orange in the U.K. said the phone enjoys “the largest interest we’ve had in a Nokia handset”.
The image above comes right in context and from Microsoft UK’s PR team member James Tutt. Of course this could very well depend on the amount of devices on stock with that particular store but, on the other side, could give a proper answer to analysts that predicted the failure of Nokia with the [...]
The Nokia Lumia 800 is probably the most highly-anticipated Windows Phone ever. We’ve been wishing and hoping for Nokia to use a powerful Windows-based mobile operating system since 2003, and finally we see the incredible phone manufacturing expertise from Finland merged with the gorgeous new Windows Phone software. It’s not all good news, though, since Nokia only recently decided to go with Windows Phone around 6 months ago, and that means they really did not have much time to release this phone. Corners may have been cut a bit, and it’s clear that this phone is [...]
It is well-known that Compal Communications is manufacturing Windows Phones for Nokia and Acer; we knew that since the company officially became Windows Phone 7 ODM back in June. Now, according to recent reports, Compal is increasing shipments and it can be mainly due to Nokia.
After shipping initial Windows Phones to Nokia back in September, the total number of units shipped from January through September was at 2.1 million. The company is expected to ship over 600,000 handsets in November compared to 200,000 delivered last month. While the exact numbers for the fourth quarter [...]
In a utopic world where applications aren’t hacked and ported to other devices, Nokia differentiates its phones from the rest with the help of certain applications that come preinstalled, such as the Nokia Drive navigation software.
According to recent reports, Nokia is going to allegedly update Nokia Drive and make it able to completely offline navigation. Currently maps can be downloaded to the phone but the actual routing process still needs a connection. This might not be a problem while you’re driving in your own country but data roaming charges can be huge. A [...]
