After a crucial decision to turn to Windows Phone as principal smartphone strategy, Nokia’s Windows Phones have been on sale in Europe since the end of last year. “No one comes into the store and asks for a Windows phone,” a European carrier’s executive in charge of mobile devices said.
This is a huge problem Nokia is facing and European carriers believe Nokia has failed to challenge the dominating competitors, Google and Apple. “If the Lumia with the same hardware came with Android in it and not Windows, it would be much easier to sell”, said [...]
A select few Nokia Lumia 710 and Lumia 800 units were shipped with unlocked Qualcomm bootloaders instead of the locked Nokia versions, according to reports.
When a device with such an unlocked bootloader was connected to a Linux computer a Qualcomm storage device popped up, basically allowing full reads and writes to the NAND. “That means you can actually write data to the device, allowing custom ROMs and more”, like interop unlocked ones. Of course, there are risks of bricking your phone which would not be covered by warranty. However, if you are interested in the [...]
Last time we looked, Nokia Music was updated to version 2.0 with UI and audio improvements. This time around, the application has been updated to version 2.1.
The changelog includes general improvements in performance and responsiveness, Nokia Music Unlimited (only available in selected countries and on certain devices) as well as controls for shuffle and repeat in the music player. If you have a Nokia Windows Phone and you use the application you might want to consult your Marketplace on the device for the refresh.

The same way we heard about Nokia preparing its TV app for Lumia Windows Phones, Nokia Reading will soon make its way into the Marketplace as the Finnish company’s e-book store, as presented at this year’s MWC.
The first country to get it will be Russia with UK, Germany, Italy, France and Spain following. If you have a Lumia 610, 700 or 800, you will be able to grab it as a free download (the 900 will have it pre-installed). There will be plenty of free e-books but there will be also an added RSS reader feature that will allow you to pin publications to the home [...]
Back in the early days of Windows Phone, Microsoft had a “Where’s My Phone Update?” page which was constantly updated with new information to help users identify the status of updates by make, model, country and carrier. It was later yanked as it became difficult to maintain because of the complexity of the entire update process.
This didn’t stop Nokia from making a similar page for the Lumia 800 for instance. Following the source link below you will land on a page where you can select your region and then your country. Then, just look up your carrier to [...]
The screenshots above come from Russia and they are allegedly snapped off of Nokia’s upcoming TV application to soon grace Lumia Windows Phones. Nokia TV would nicely compliment an already interesting application offering that the Espoo-company is offering to its Windows Phone customers.
According to the report, Nokia TV will allow for video show streaming on WiFi and Data from a searchable database of local network offerings. The first country to see the app will allegedly be Finland, with local stations like YLE, MTV3 and Nelopen being supported. There’s no info on [...]
Nokia’s Lumia 800 has been fighting its own demons when it comes to the phone’s battery performance, and it seems that Nokia’s been trying to fix the issue ever since the handset debuted. We heard about the phone’s 11500 update in January, which was supposed to remedy the situation, but it remained. More recently, we’ve looked to the phone’s 12070 update for salvation, announced earlier this month. We heard about some tales of the update’s availability early-on, but Nokia’s largely been sitting on it, waiting for April 18 to start sending [...]
It is March 28, and, as Stephen Elop himself hinted (promised), Nokia made its Windows Phone debut in China. The first CDMA Nokia Windows Phone on the market is the 800C, introduced with China Telecom.
It will become available in April in the two best-selling flavors: black and cyan. If you are looking for something else (cheaper), make sure to wait until the second quarter of the year (which is just around the corner) when a CDMA version of the Lumia 610 will also land on China Telecom’s line-up.
Future owners of the Lumia 800C on China Telecom will have access to [...]
We already know that the Lumia 710 and Lumia 800 Nokia Windows Phones don’t (just yet) support Internet Sharing despite the fact that the Lumia 610 and the Lumia 900 have the feature enabled out-of-the-box.
Microsoft and Nokia “are working diligently on that” and, according to recent reports from Italy, the WiFi tethering feature — introduced with Windows Phone 7.5 “Mango” — should be rolled out to the Lumia 800 starting the end of the month. The report is based on someone’s claims who allegedly attended a meeting between carrier [...]
After recently updating its Nokia Drive and Maps applications for Windows Phone, the Finnish company isn’t stopping here as the Nokia Music application also received a version bump to number two.
The good folks at WPCentral reached out to Nokia and found out that the new version of Nokia Music only includes UI and audio improvements. However, every incremental version number counts and speaks of dedication. As it unfortunately turns out though, the application refresh is not available in the U.S. (which could be good news for international readers who were always [...]
When Nokia and Microsoft agreed to collaborate last year in February it was not sure which company was the other one’s safety belt; truth is Nokia needed to regain a huge chunk of the market lost and Microsoft needed a strong hardware partner to build the buzz for Windows Phone.
After launching the first Windows Phones — the Lumia 800 together with the Lumia 710 — five months ago, Nokia is confident. “Our strategy is working. When we formed an alliance last year with Microsoft our intention was to regain lost share. After one year, it is still working. We [...]
Watch this week’s Windows Phone view as we wrap-up all that’s good and bad inside the world of Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform. In today’s show we begin by talking about all the rumors that surround the launch of the Nokia Lumia 900 on AT&T. We later cover all the recent commitments that Nokia has made for the current Nokia Windows Phones in the market. We continue with our week’s coverage of the Nokia concept redesign for Windows Phone and Project Detroit. We later discuss the recent leaks of Windows Phone Tango’s multitasking capabilities [...]
Back in the day when we reviewed the LG Optimus 7, one of the Windows Phone 7 launch devices, we took a closer look at the “Play To” DLNA application which since has been renamed by the manufacturer to SmartShare.
However, Nokia is now releasing a Beta of a similar app, called “Play To”, for Lumia Windows Phones. The principle is the very same: you can display pictures and videos on DLNA-capable devices over WiFi, if you are on the same network. These can be TV sets, BlueRay players, or a computer running Windows 7 for instance. Future releases will most [...]
If you have a Windows Phone made by Nokia, any of the Lumia devices, really, you will be able to use the Creative Studio which is now available as a free download if you have an Espoo-designed phone. It’s basically a simple photo editing application which could help you get more out of a boring (or dull) image.
The best feature is probably the live preview where you can see real-time results, in the camera application, of the effects you apply. That aside, there’s also a panorama mode if you’re interested and not willing to wait until the Lumia 800 gets this as [...]
When Nokia’s first Windows Phone handsets arrived, we were understandably excited to get our hands on them and see if the actual user experience would live up to our hopes. The Lumia 800 largely satisfied those expectations, though we still identified quite a few areas where Nokia could have done things differently. One of those areas where we hoped the company could do better was with camera features. While HTC threw-in some special effect modes, including a panorama setting, Nokia was missing such luxuries. Now it looks like Nokia’s finally coming around to spruce things [...]
Early this morning, we found out that Nokia had revealed a new feature for its Lumia 610 when publishing the phone’s specs online, confirming support for sharing the handset’s cellular data connection with other devices via a wireless hotspot. At the time, we wondered if this news meant that the extant Lumia models would see similar support via update one day in the future. Sure enough, that now looks to be the case, with Nokia mentioning that tethering will be making it to all of the Lumia-series Windows Phone handsets.
The subject came up in a Q&A posted on [...]
Windows Phone fans in China can already pre-order the HTC Triumph — the HTC Titan, really — and it looks like Nokia doesn’t want to let HTC get away with it, at least if Stephen Elop can do something about it.
According to the CEO, March 28 is the date to circle in your calendar if you are waiting for Nokia Windows Phones in China. There were no other details but given the recent rumors as well as documentation found on the Chinese Regulatory Authorities websites, the Lumia 800 as well as the Lumia 710 (in their GSM and CDMA variants) are possible candidates. [...]
After it initially was just a tease, Nokia has announced the white version of the Lumia 800 Windows Phone to join the cyan, magenta and black flavors on February 6.
If you live in the U.K., you are now able to grab a white Lumia 800 only if you purchase it from Phones4U, as they currently have an exclusive on the phone. You can get the phone for free if you chose to go with any contract which starts from £20.50 per month or above. As far as specs go, it’s the same as the rest of the colors: 1.4GHz processor, 3.7-inch ClearBlack AMOLED display with WVGA resolution, [...]
Details regarding the new 12070 update for Nokia Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 Windows Phones emerged yesterday, complete with changelog as well as roll-out regions. At the time it appeared that only India and Singapore users could grab it (with others to follow soon) and now our friends over in the U.K. can get their updating cables ready.
Only the Lumia 800 page features the firmware refresh but we’re quite positive that the U.K. Lumia 710 will follow shortly. As far as details are concerned, we’re looking at the same 1600.2487.8107.12070 refresh which almost triples the [...]
As we’ve previously mentioned, the Nokia Lumia 800 is getting a software update in certain regions. From the official Nokia forums we find out that the update refers to devices in India and Singapore and contains the 1600.2487.8107.12070 refresh.
It brings essential improvements: enhanced battery standby and talk time performance, battery capacity icon instead of question mark on top right of screen, improved bass in audio performance, soft-key illumination at all brightness levels, fixes for device performance issues including self-reboots, freezes and [...]
“Smart group shot”, “Panorama”, “Action”, and “Self Timer” modes regarding camera improvements are not the only ones that should be part of the upcoming firmware update for the Nokia Lumia 800. Users have been experiencing poor battery life and the 12070 firmware version aims to fix those issues too.
If you live in Singapore and you have a Nokia Lumia 800 you will be able to upgrade your phone to the latest 12070 firmware using your Zune software. According to reports the new software increases battery life dramatically and, in [...]
Nokia’s Lumia 800 is a fantastic phone, but it’s been plagued by a few small issue that detract from its awesomeness ever since it debuted. We’ve heard plenty of talk about Nokia’s work to fix the phone’s battery issues, having it properly report and maintain its charge. After coming out with an update to address the issue, Nokia pronounced it resolved, and turned its attention to audio and camera issues. Now there’s a new firmware that’s been uncovered for the 800, which suggests that not only are those camera changes about to arrive, but that [...]
That pretty expensive bundle which was rumored to get the Nokia Lumia 800 to the American market — and which has been available at brick-and-mortar Microsoft Stores — is now available for purchase online, if you have nothing better to do with $900.
For $899 you can choose between a black and a magenta themed bundle which includes an unlocked Lumia 800, one Nokia Purity HD stereo headphones by Monster, a Nokia Play 360 wireless Bluetooth speaker, and a Nokia Luna Bluetooth headset. In case you decide it’s money well spent, follow the source link below and add it [...]
