We've got a few updates on phone updates (no pun intended) which we've already talked to you about before, concerning the long-awaited Ice Cream Sandwich update for the HTC Thunderbolt on Verizon and the lack of Windows Phone 7.8 for Nokia's Lumia 710 on T-Mobile. Right at the end of January, we got a big surprise when we saw that Verizon had posted documents on its HTC Thunderbolt support page indicating that the phone's Android 4.0.4 update was finally going to arrive. The update was supposed to come to the phone last summer, and after going absent for so long, we had really started to ...

A couple days back, we saw the long-awaited arrival of Windows Phone 7.8 updates for existing models, with news coming in that first Nokia, and then HTC were making the update available to their users. If you didn't want to wait for your phone to get its official chance to upgrade, we even shared with you the technique for forcing Windows Phone models to accept the update. Still, we're sure some of you like to keep your smartphone nice and legit, and were waiting for your handset to be tapped for its formal WP7.8 update. If you've got a Lumia 710 on T-Mobile, you might want to rethink that ...

As usual here at Pocketnow we're happy to tell you what we think, and we're excitedly waiting to hear your opinions, in our upcoming series which will contain both 2012 recaps and 2013 predictions. We'll have something for ...

Several months back, I wrote a piece explaining why it's the rate plans, not device prices, that customers should focus on when buying subsidized smartphones in the U.S. That's because, while shelling out a mountain of dollars for a smartphone at a retail store feels a lot more costly than paying $80 a month for a wireless bill, the reality is that the monthly bill will cost you much more over the course of a two-year contract. I'm not sure people, as a whole, have gotten the point yet. That's probably because reality's hard to accept, companies obscure the true cost of their services, ...

The manufacturer wants you to know that it hasn't forgotten about you, posting a message to its blog today to explain some of the software updates on the way for owners of the Lumia 610, 710, 800, and 900. While it doesn't refer to it by name, Nokia alludes to the release of Windows Phone 7.8 by mention of a WP8-style start screen coming to all four ...

We've talked about it briefly on our Pocketnow Weekly Podcast -- and we occasionally touch on it whenever Nokia's and Microsoft's share of the market comes in discussion -- but now it appears that the speculations can end. The Finnish company made its financial records for the second quarter of the year public, and with the numbers, we find out details about Lumia sales. It appears that Nokia sold four million Lumia devices in the second quarter -- compared with one million reported for the last quarter of 2011 and two million in the first quarter of this year -- managing to double its ...

Some Nokia Lumia 710 and 800 devices are already getting the Windows Phone 8773 update -- dubbed Tango, which is running out-of-the-box on the Lumia 610 -- but it sure looks like the Finnish phone maker will not stop right here. A new update popped up on NaviFirm and it looks to be Windows Phone 8779. The update's regions are listed as being countries like Thailand, Pakistan, India, Lebanon, and Tunisia so it could only bring features which would improve the user experience in these markets. With many features already included in the Tango refresh -- like internet sharing, flip phone ...

A few days back, we learned about a leaked T-Mobile screenshot that seemed to foretell the arrival of a software update for Nokia's Lumia 710, set to start going out yesterday. The release would bring the phone up to Tango, along with finally granting it a WiFi hotspot mode. Now that the date has passed, we haven't heard any confirmation from users actually getting the update, and now Nokia itself has posted a message that an update for the 710 and 800 will instead start going out to Lumia owners worldwide as of June 27. According to Nokia's country-specific update status pages, updates ...

Earlier this month we learned about a couple promotions Nokia was planning that centered around the release of this summer's Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises. Part of those plans included the release of new Batman Xpress-on covers for the Lumia 710. We heard a few details about how these might be released, but were left with plenty of questions remaining, including if existing owners of the 710 would be able to pick one up. Now Nokia has published the full rundown on the offer, and it's even more generous than we were hoping. Better than giving existing 710 owners the chance to buy one ...

We've seen Windows Phone Tango, build 8773, arrive pre-installed on phones like the Nokia Lumia 610, but what about it coming as an update to already-released models? A recent leak suggests that owners of the Lumia 710 on T-Mobile could be about to see Tango updates start arriving, while a new addition to Microsoft's site has us thinking that the update could be nearly ready for other models, as well. Microsoft has a new version of its Windows Phone update history page for its website, finally adding 7.10.8773.98 to the mix. For the moment, the new info isn't available on the site's ...

Last week, we learned that in addition to Nokia releasing a special edition Lumia 900 for the release of The Dark Knight Rises, it looked like the 710 would see a similar Batman tie-in. We got to see some Batman-themed Xpress-on covers for the 710, but didn't have any details on just how widespread they might be, nor on what you'd have to do to get one. While we still haven't heard any official word, details on the promotion have now leaked, for those of you interested in a Dark Knight Rises 710. To get one of these Batman covers with your 710, you'll need to get to pick up a new 710 on a ...
