Nokia's Lumia 520 and 521 have become the best-selling Windows Phone 8 models around thanks in no small part to their incredibly affordable price tags. Not only did they launch cheap, but they've been getting even cheaper, and we regularly see them selling for well under $100. When you've got a smartphone phone going for $50 off-contract during one of these promotions, sooner or later someone's going to ask, “why aren't we just giving these things away?” As it turns out, that day has arrived, and shoppers at Microsoft's online store hoping to snag a one year Xbox Music subscription are ...

We spend a lot of time at Pocketnow talking about high-end luxury smartphones - but there’s a whole other side to the mobile market, a more affordable sector often dismissed as too laden with underperforming products to warrant much attention. Well, this year, Motorola and Nokia have done a very good job surprising us in this area, delivering the low-cost Moto G and Lumia 520, respectively. Our own Taylor Martin just reviewed the Moto G last week, and I spent a day getting to know the device shortly thereafter. Our consensus is that it's an impressive smartphone with a blockbuster price ...

When you see a smartphone available on the Home Shopping Network for $99, you might think that it would be something horrible that would fall apart after a month or it would be so slow and crashy that it would be unusable… unless it's a Nokia Windows Phone. We went ahead and ordered the budget friendly Nokia Lumia 521 to see how it works.  It's also available from T-Mobile, Walmart and other retailers, but the Home Shopping Network bundles a few extra accessories for a really great price.  Not ony is this Nokia Lumia 521 a really great deal, but there are a few things that actually put ...

Last week you may have noticed that the Home Shopping Network had a little sale on the T-Mobile Nokia Lumia 521.  For only $99, we decided to hit the buy button especially since we didn't give it too much coverage when it was first released and since then the phone has become quite popular.  It was just delivered so naturally we're going to give you an unboxing video.  You might be surprised by just how much is actually included in the box if you buy the Lumia 521 from HSN.  Most phones these days have a simple little box with a charging plug and a USB cable.  Not very ...

Watch today's Pocketnow Daily as we talk about the Moto X event finally becoming a reality on August 1st. Nokia's Lumia 521 is next, as it may not be hot in specs or features, but it sure is hot for its $100 price tag on T-Mobile. New Nexus 7 leaks show hardware details, and another look at Android 4.3 on the Nexus 4 show significant improvements in performance. VLC for the iPhone and iPad is next, as Apple has finally approved it again, but hurry up and download it before Apple changes its mind. We end today's show talking about Sony's new idea of bringing their Alpha department together ...

Nokia's Lumia 521 (and its sister the 520) may not wow us with blistering performance, super-thin hardware, or one hulk of a powerful camera, but we're endlessly fascinated by just how inexpensive this phone continues to be. Even at $150, it was one of the best launch prices we had ever seen for an off-contract smartphone from a respected manufacturer. We've already seen discounts shave away at that $150, like how Walmart had it for just $130, but this new price is the best we've run across yet: HSN has the 521 on sale for a hair under $100. You might remember that HSN was also involved ...

I know, I know, comparing the top-of-the-line Android phone with the bottom-of-the-barrel Windows Phone is crazy talk.  However, recently we saw Ben Rudolph's video showing how much gear you could get for the price of an off-contract Samsung Galaxy S4; including the new inexpensive Nokia Lumia 521 Windows Phone of course.  Ben paid $750 for the off-contract AT&T version of the Galaxy S 4 from Best Buy but the T-Mobile version is only $629.  He showed how you could get a Nokia Lumia 521 straight up with no contract subsidy for only $150 and then use the rest of that $600 to buy some ...

Last month, T-Mobile announced the crazy-low "I can't believe that's for a smartphone" price for the Nokia Lumia 521, which is selling for a mere $150, free of contractual obligation. At the time, we got the scoop on early HSN sales, as well as the phone's eventual arrival at Walmart and Microsoft retail stores. That was exciting news, but it wasn't quite the whole story of the 521's launch. Today we fill in a few missing bits, as availability of the 521 really starts taking off. We already knew Microsoft was getting the 521 on May 11, but since then the phone's pricing has become ...

It's no secret that we're seriously jazzed about T-Mobile's crazy-affordable pricing for Nokia's Lumia 521, selling the Windows Phone 8 handset for a scant $150. As we've mentioned when discussing this bargain, that's quite a bit less than what the international 520 has been going for, which we've seen more up around the $200 mark. Luckily for all of you not situated in the States, it looks like Lumia 520 prices are starting to come down to meet the 521's, with Canada's Koodo Mobile pricing its 520 at the same $150. Granted, those are Canadian dollars, but with the exchange rate what it ...

Not all of us have read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, so not all of us were exactly qualified to make the lame joke that kicks off this week's podcast. But we made it, and we stand behind it. Because as hundreds of fifth-rate "manufacturers" well know, sometimes you just have to fake it. But we're not talking about secondhand knockoff products in this episode of the Weekly. Rather, we get serious about octa-core comparisons, the till-recently-mythical HTC M4, the insanely cheap new Lumia out of Finland, and just how tired we are or aren't of the Samsung Galaxy S 4. In between, we ...

Nokia's Lumia 521 is coming to T-Mobile. We heard earlier this month that the phone would launch sometime in May, and at the time speculated a little about the smartphone's pricing. After all, this whole UNcarrier thing is new for T-Mobile, and we're still learning what to expect. We guessed that maybe it might go for $50 upfront on the carrier's installment plan, followed by some pretty low payments themselves. Well, today we finally get the details about the launch we were waiting for, and the pricing is even a little hard for us to believe: the Lumia 521 will sell for just about $150. ...

Back when Nokia's first Windows Phone 8 models were announced, T-Mobile got itself a special version of the Lumia 820, its own Lumia 810. That phone is only about six months old at this point, but it looks like it's already being put out to pasture, with a new leak marking the handset as approaching its EOL date. According to the document, T-Mobile is assigning the 810 end-of-life status as of next month, but before then you should start to see it replaced with the Lumia 521. Just as T-Mobile got itself a custom 820 with the 810, the 521 is its version of the 520. Now, something's a little ...

T-Mobile has already announced that the Nokia Lumia 521 would be coming to their network twice. It should be showing up within a month or so, but we got to play with an early version at the Pepcom Digital Focus event the other night in New York City. It's certainly smaller than the popular larger phones out there, and definitely smaller than T-Mobile's Nokia Lumia 810. It really feels great in the hand, but it's not quite as ergonomically designed as the Lumia 710 was. The thickness and weight feel just about perfect, as does the smaller screen size, but then again I'm the type who prefers ...

T-Mobile's been dancing around the Nokia Lumia 521 for months now. The carrier variant of the budget-priced Lumia 520, announced alongside the 720 back at the Mobile World Congress, is coming to T-Mobile at some point – that much, the carrier confirmed in February. At the time, it had nothing to say about availability other than that specifics would arrive "at a later date." Since then, we've seen new pics of the 521 leak, and while T-Mobile has yet to get down into the details of just when you'll finally be able to pick up a 521, it has finally set a launch window, confirming that sales ...

It's been just over a month since the Nokia Lumia 520 and 720 went official at the MWC in Barcelona, where we had the opportunity to go hands-on with the phones. While neither is particularly high-end, at least they add a little more variety to Nokia's Windows Phone 8 lineup while providing some new options for budget-conscious users. A variant of the 520, the Lumia 521, has been getting ready to launch on T-Mobile in the US. It recently got its FCC certification, and now we get to check out the first full-sized press render of the handset. As shouldn't be surprising for a T-Mobile model, ...
