Adam Doud sure doesn't like the idea of a Windows Phone phablet. Pocketnow's newest editor is, if nothing else, consistent. He's denounced the concept of a Nokia-made smartphone/tablet hybrid more than once, with his latest anti-phablet proclamation coming on the heels of today's unveiling of the new Lumia 1520. Adam's arguments are quite valid. His insistence that modern Windows Phone software can't effectively utilize the added screen real estate of a phablet is understandable, even if the problem isn't confined to Microsoft's OS (we recently took the Android-based HTC One max to task ...

Nokia shocked the world today by actually having a Nokia World event in the twilight of their device manufacturing days. With the door on the phone factory about to close – at least the door with the “Nokia” logo on it - Nokia brought some pretty nice devices to the Windows Phone Lumia lineup, including two new six inch phablets and the oft rumored Nokia tablet. The crowd went wild. Go Nokia! Having said that, I have already made my general disposition toward a Nokia phablet known in a previous editorial. I understand the concept of it. I understand the reasoning behind it. I ...

Nokia World is finally happening in Abu Dhabi, and it's great to see that the company's new products got announced in time before a competing company stole their thunder. Let's begin with the first-ever Windows Phone phablet to hit the market, the Nokia Lumia 1520. The device is now official, and the device is more than just huge when it comes to news, and size. The Lumia 1520 is also the most powerful Windows Phone to ever be announced. As expected, it is a big phone, with a 6-inch 1080p display, which is already bigger than the HTC One max that we recently had a chance to review. It's ...

Apple's not the only one with big news coming soon, and in just a matter of hours, Nokia's throwing a Nokia World event in Abu Dhabi. There's a lot to cover here, so let's dive right in to the device that feels like it's the nexus of this announcement, the Lumia 1520. Well, it wasn't always the 1520 - not to us anyway. We've been talking about the general idea of a phablet-sized Lumia for a while, and back in August, that started taking shape as a phone codenamed Bandit. Before the month was out, we heard that Bandit might launch as the 1520, and our first look at fully-assembled hardware ...

If that "Guru" is any indication, Nokia sure intends to have devices other than straight-up phones and tablets to present at tomorrow's Nokia World announcement. Now those accessories it brings to show off look like they could finally include the Nokia Treasure Tag, a Bluetooth-based tracking device we've been hearing about in rumors and leaks since the sunny days of July. With just hours to go before Nokia's event, we see the Treasure Tag make a reappearance, starring in a render alongside another of tomorrow's expected guests, the Lumia 1520. While there have been Treasure Tag leaked ...

Those of you waiting for a phablet on the Windows Phone platform may be in store for more than just any phablet. We've heard about the Nokia Lumia 1520, and we do know that the company is planning to announce this phone on Tuesday at their Nokia World event. But if this thing were just big, it probably wouldn't mean as much as it does now that we've got some specs to match its size. The device just got leaked in a Chinese online store, and this is definitely going to be a monster. It's apparently bringing a 6-inch 1080p display, which in the chassis of a Lumia is already far from big. Then ...

Google may be keeping us guessing about product launch dates, but Nokia's been much easier to read: the company has a big event scheduled for next Tuesday, when we're almost certainly going to see the introduction of a number of new models, including the 1520 phablet. With just days to go before that event, some late-stage hardware specs have leaked, preparing us for just what to expect on October 22. Not much of this is too unexpected, but @evleaks asserts that we'll see the phone launch with a Snapdragon 800, 20MP PureView camera, six-inch 1080p display, and 2GB of RAM. Wireless charging ...

In just barely over one week, Nokia World is set to kick off in Abu Dhabi, bringing us news of what's rumored to be half-a-dozen-some new devices. We've had plenty of opportunities to guess what will be present, and the one real sure thing – the one model no one seems to doubt will actually make an appearance – feels like the Lumia 1520 phablet. Apparently we're not the only ones anticipating its launch, as we get to see in this leak of some 1520 cases. This find is only really tempered by the use of a 1520 stand-in (with the very same screenshot we've been seeing in renders for a ...

For a smartphone that's still weeks away from being launched, we sure have had plenty of opportunities to check out Nokia's Lumia 1520. So far, those have included both leaked renders, as well as pictures of the hardware in the flesh, and between those sources, they been revealing the handset in a number of color options. Early on, we got to look at a red 1520 running some in-development software, and now that model returns our way, this time showing up in a new render. Notably, this image is of significantly higher quality than the yellow 1520 render that arrived last month, and looks ...

It all started so simply; we'd seen smartphone after smartphone arrive with displays in the three or four-inch ranges, and larger tablets were clearly a different breed of device entirely. But then that middle ground, previously a no-phone's-land, started to see some activity. Maybe the first model to really get people talking about this form factor was the 5.3-inch first Galaxy Note, but since then we've seen dozens more arrive. Those haven't all been like the Note, which might be best described as a large phone, but have also come as models in the six-inch realm that felt more like small ...

Watch today's Pocketnow Daily as we talk about the much-expected Nokia RX-114 tablet reaching the FCC, along with Nokia's first phablet, the Lumia 1520. We then talk about the leaked displays of the HTC Butterfly 2, and what to expect from this device. Sony is next as we've got some press renders that point to a smaller, but still powerful, Xperia Z1f. Google follows the news as we've got the company selling apps on vending machines in Japan. We end today's show talking about Android 4.3, and when we expect it to reach your device. All this and more after the break. Stories: - Nokia tablet ...

September is just about to leave us behind for October, which means that Nokia's October 22 event is finally in sight. While there's bound to be some lower-end Asha business, we're also expecting to finally see Nokia launch some much more prominent devices, including the Lumia 1520 phablet and maybe even that 2520 tablet. Over the weekend, we had the opportunity to check out just such a Nokia tablet in some FCC paperwork, and today we're in the same boat with the 1520, as its own documentation gets published by the agency. We're looking at two distinct hardware versions here, as the ...

The mobile space is full of profound juxtapositions this week as Apple can't make enough iPhones to meet demand, while BlackBerry can't keep its head above water long enough to sell existing stock. Meanwhile, Microsoft announces its second round of Surface products, while soon to be-acquired hardware maker Nokia (allegedly) prepares its own Windows tablet - and the horrible marriage of smartphone maker HTC and audio baron Beats finally, mercifully, dissolves. That's the big news for the week ending September 27, 2013, and all of it -plus iOS 7 literally making people sick- awaits you in ...
