What the heck is going on with Nokia's Lumia 1520 and the phone's retail availability? We just saw pre-orders open, apparently with the intent to make the handset available on November 15, only to have Microsoft subsequently do an about-face, insisting that the orders went live prematurely, and putting a halt to them. So where does that leave us? Well, if we're to believe the latest leak, the 1520 is still on its way, but just a little later than expected, and should be showing up arm-in-arm with the Lumia 2520. Leaks identify the retail launch date for the 1520 at AT&T as Friday, ...

Remember we told you yesterday that the Nokia Lumia 1520 for AT&T can be pre-ordered from the Microsoft Store? Well, forget it! According to a recent report, the page went live prematurely and Microsoft has since yanked it; it lived about 12 hours. However, all pre-orders for the phone itself, as well as cover accessories, placed within that window will be honored, according to Microsoft, at the time the phone will become available. Meanwhile AT&T and Nokia both confirmed that the Lumia 1520 will indeed be part of the carrier's line-up -- something we knew from the very beginning ...

Watch today's Pocketnow Daily as we talk about the Nokia Lumia 1520 reaching AT&T very soon at a very interesting price point. Samsung follows the news as we go through their plans for foldable displays, 4K displays and their custom CPUs for 2014 and 2015. We later talk about Microsoft's possible shortlist for their next CEO. Apple follows in the news, this time because apparently the company has increased production of the iPhone 5S and changed the supplier for the 5C. We end today's show talking about Android 4.4 KitKat reaching other smartphones and already being tested. All this ...

The price is $549.00 if you prefer to grab the unit without the agreement and, whatever your choice, you can pre-order your phone on the Microsoft Store at the source below. There's no word in international availability just yet, and, those of you who opt for the AT&T flavor should know that this particular model doesn't support wireless ...

As we spent the morning anticipating on the latest episode of the Pocketnow Weekly podcast, Google's long-awaited Nexus 5 finally got itself announced today. It was a long slog; even earlier today, as the minutes turned to hours and all those "confirmations" started dissolving into the nothingness from whence they came, it was looking like yet another false alarm. But just as we were starting to retool for a November 1 release date, the Nexus 5 hit the Google Play Store. And when units finally start arriving at buyer doorsteps over the next few days, they'll come packing a feature that I ...

It happens to the most of us: shoot that perfect picture, say goodbye to the moment, and when you revisit the image you just snapped, oh snap, it's out of focus. Nokia seems to have a solution ready with the Refocus feature we've been hearing about since Abu Dhabi. Sami Niemi, Nokia’s director of Capture & Relive software product management, explains: “Nokia Refocus captures different images over the entire focus range. What this means is that you don’t have to worry about getting your shot in focus before you take a photo. You just capture your image first and then play with ...

On October 22 Nokia announced, among other things, the Lumia 1520, at the Abu Dhabi Nokia World 2013. It is the largest -- six-inch screen -- and most powerful Windows Phone to date, with its quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor. It also packs 2GB of RAM, 32GB of built-in storage (expandable), and a 20MP PureView camera. The phone will be available on AT&T -- with some modifications to its wireless charging system and support -- and today's leak tries to anticipate the look of the color options on the carrier's line-up. Black, red, and white are the shades mentioned and the purported ...

Some of you might have already noticed that a certain Nokia Camera application will be installed instead of the Nokia Pro Camera on your Lumia 1020 phones. The new app combines the Pro Camera and Smart Camera separate applications into a single one, and, also brings some improvements like the ability to choose quickly between three presets: Auto, Sports, and Night. The app can be downloaded from the Store for Nokia Lumia 1020 and Lumia 925 phones, and, will come pre-installed on the brand new Lumia 1520. With the roll-out of the Nokia Lumia Black update -- formerly known as Bittersweet ...

I'm writing this editorial while sitting in a Boston-area Starbucks, which means two things: 1) yes, I'm one of those pretentious jerks who writes in public, and 2) I'm seated next to a wireless charging plate embedded in the tabletop. The hardware is unobtrusive, just a glossy disc about three inches across, mounted flush with the table. At first glance, it almost seems like a permanent coaster, a structural suggestion from management encouraging you to "put your drink here." Only on closer inspection does the Powermat branding become evident, with tiny text encouraging the curious to ...

Fun fact: flame wars, petty bickering, and troll hijinks aren't just confined to the online world; they find a ready home in corporate tactics as well. That's a reality we were reminded of this week, as Apple announced its new iPad family on the same day Nokia unveiled not just its first Windows-based tablet, but also the first-ever Windows Phone phablets, at its Nokia World event in Abu Dhabi. Predictably, the Apple news obliterated Nokia's announcement in the news cycle - but, the Pocketnow Weekly being a platform-agnostic, equal-opportunity podcast, we're gonna cover both new device ...

Adam Doud sure doesn't like the idea of a Windows Phone phablet. Pocketnow's newest editor is, if nothing else, consistent. He's denounced the concept of a Nokia-made smartphone/tablet hybrid more than once, with his latest anti-phablet proclamation coming on the heels of today's unveiling of the new Lumia 1520. Adam's arguments are quite valid. His insistence that modern Windows Phone software can't effectively utilize the added screen real estate of a phablet is understandable, even if the problem isn't confined to Microsoft's OS (we recently took the Android-based HTC One max to task ...

Nokia shocked the world today by actually having a Nokia World event in the twilight of their device manufacturing days. With the door on the phone factory about to close – at least the door with the “Nokia” logo on it - Nokia brought some pretty nice devices to the Windows Phone Lumia lineup, including two new six inch phablets and the oft rumored Nokia tablet. The crowd went wild. Go Nokia! Having said that, I have already made my general disposition toward a Nokia phablet known in a previous editorial. I understand the concept of it. I understand the reasoning behind it. I ...

Nokia World is finally happening in Abu Dhabi, and it's great to see that the company's new products got announced in time before a competing company stole their thunder. Let's begin with the first-ever Windows Phone phablet to hit the market, the Nokia Lumia 1520. The device is now official, and the device is more than just huge when it comes to news, and size. The Lumia 1520 is also the most powerful Windows Phone to ever be announced. As expected, it is a big phone, with a 6-inch 1080p display, which is already bigger than the HTC One max that we recently had a chance to review. It's ...
