For a little while now, a rumor's been kicking around that Nokia's working on a spinoff of the Lumia 1520 phablet, most often referred to as the 1520v. From the start, the idea has been that this would be some kind of mini version of the handset, but the details haven't been entirely clear. Over the weekend, a whole bunch of new info arrived, and while it does offer a fair selection of new tidbits, all the conflicting info sure isn't doing a very good job of getting to the bottom of this puzzle. Let's start with the screen. As a mini 1520, we'd hope to see the 1520v to keep the same 1080p ...

Remember a month ago when we told you about the RAW photo support coming to Nokia Lumia phones? An update to Nokia Camera delivered compatibility with Digital Negative files, but there was a hitch: the handset needed the new Nokia Lumia Black update to function. That wasn't an issue for the 1520, but the 1020, with its 41-megapxiel PureView sensor just aching to snap some RAW shots, still hadn't seen Lumia Black become available. Thankfully, that's now changing, as AT&T starts making the software available to its users. AT&T appears to be first out of the gate with this release, ...

The big phones only get bigger, it seems. We've been clamoring over gigantic phones since the original Galaxy Note announcement, and possibly even before that over phones which are now comparably quite small. Personally, I've been carrying large phones since January 2012, not long after the original Galaxy Note made its way stateside. And I've been back and forth between loving and hating giant phones ever since. They come with a handful of advantages, and just as much baggage. After all is said and done, though, I'm always happy to come back to a larger smartphone (within reason) due to ...

Click this link to join the hangout! . Topic This week was pretty busy, and in an unexpected way; we like it! We're seeing new Google Play Edition devices -- LG G Pad 8.3, Sony Xperia Z Ultra, Nexus 7 in white -- and we've published our reviews of the Motorola Moto G and Nokia Lumia 1520. If that's not enough, Android 4.4.2 is being pushed out to Nexus devices -- some didn't even get the chance to grab the 4.4.1 update -- and HTC is announcing a black version of its One Max phablet, given, for Hong Kong. Spotify started offering free music streaming to mobile devices, and a new, ...

Sometimes there's so much news you need to call in the Reserves just to handle it all, and that's just what we've done this week. Between Google's surprise announcement of an unlikely pair of additions to the Google Play Store; Microsoft's rumored offer to pay Samsung to keep making Windows Phones; and a boatload of reviews, we're in over our heads this week - so we've brought in four team members to do the news justice. Sorry, no listener mail this week - but in its place you get a consolation prize: you get to know what curious fate befell that Lumia 2520 we were tinkering with a while ...

Before you get out the pitchforks, we should clear up one little detail about the title of this review: the Lumia 1520 is by no means a bad smartphone. At least, not in the traditional sense. Nokia's latest high-end Lumia is packed with top-shelf specs, as well as a processor and screen combination never before seen on a Windows Phone. In that sense, the Lumia 1520 is "bad" - meaning 1980s-slang bad. Shaft bad. Bad Meaning Good. Dig? But in exchange for this unprecedented bad-ness, the 1520 demands a lot of pocket space. With a six-inch display and 206 grams of heft, this phone is ...

So you've decided to spring for a special gift this holiday season - either for a romantic partner, a family member, or yourself (you heel). Shunning more mainstream ideas like a quadrocopter or that perennial snooze-fest, the necktie, you've opted to give the gift of communication this year. You're buying a smartphone, despite how many hassles you're bound to run into when altering a wireless contract that's not in your name, and dealing with sales reps who may or may not be lying to your face. You're in for quite a trip. But that's not the end of your challenges. Because you, ...

According to Michael Fisher, the Nokia Lumia 1520 is ludicrously big. Insanely big. Our official review hasn’t hit the feeds yet, but I’m pretty sure that’s one thing you can take to the bank – it’s an insanely big huge phone. This is not necessarily a bad thing. Phablets are here and they’ll be here for a while so best just get used to the concept and move on. I’m sure it’s a great phone and there is a demand for it. I’ve written in the past about how the Lumia 1520 just would not be for me when it came out. I still hold that opinion. But one thing that made us do a ...

"Avalanches above, business continues below." That's a lyric from a very weird song, but it also encapsulates the goings-on in the Pocketnow offices this week - with technology news bubbling up from the outside world even as review devices tumble down from above. We'll talk about those devices as well as the rest of the happenings in the mobile technology world, and we'll take questions from your listener mail in the ninety minutes of this week's podcast. (We'll also take every opportunity to distract you from Michael Fisher's awful audio quality with promises of G Flex coverage, coming ...

The Nokia Lumia 1520 will be available for in-store purchase at AT&T starting today and we're hoping that the stock is healthy. Apparently, those who have ordered or pre-ordered online will get their devices at a later date, both from Microsoft and AT&T, according to some bad news people were receiving via e-mail. "Because of overwhelming demand, your Nokia Lumia 1520 order is delayed in shipping. As soon as your shipping label is printed, we'll send you an email with the tracking information. You can also track your order on our site", says the e-mail. However, Microsoft will ...

The utility of a supersized screen and the powerful simplicity of Windows Phone, all inside the same casing. Nokia recently elevated that concept from outlandish fantasy to full-on reality with the Lumia 1520, and thanks to the fine folks at Nokia and AT&T, we've finally got our own copy of the world's first Windows Phone phablet! We'll be taking the 1520 for a drive over the next few weeks, but we've got to warn you up front: it might take a little longer than usual for our full review to make an appearance. Due to those troublesome "circumstances beyond our control," the Pocketnow ...

The Nokia Lumia 1520 is the first ever phablet to be powered by Windows Phone 8. Is it too big? Judging by numbers -- with a screen of six-inches in diagonal -- we might be inclined to say yes, but we'll just wait for our full review to draw a conclusion. As far as the technology inside the Lumia 1520, Jussi Ropo, Nokia Display and Touch technology manager believes that “in terms of technology and providing a great experience to our customers, the Nokia Lumia 1520 has the best screen we’ve ever created. This screen is the culmination of everything we know about how to make ...

At the beginning of the month, both Microsoft and AT&T have started taking pre-orders for the Lumia 1520. The price was $199 with a two-year contract (and additional goodies thrown in by Microsoft and the carrier) but it appears that AT&T has dropped another $100 from its price. If you follow the source link below to the phone's page on the carrier's website you'll see the Lumia 1520 being listed as available for pre-order at $99.99, with the two-year agreement. The $100 difference is an online discount and should you order, "your Nokia Lumia 1520 will be shipped on November 19, ...

Not everyone sees the world in the same way. Of course that's plainly obvious if you've ever spent time in the dungeons comment sections of the internet, but it's easy to forget that it's also true in a literal sense. Not everyone sees or hears the same way you might … and that's as true for smartphone users as for anyone else. So what kind of considerations go into buying and using today's mobile technology products when you're visually impaired? What kind of brand wars exist in the world of the blind? Are we going in the right direction with audio cues and glass screens, or were the ...

Nokia is constantly trying to improve its flagship cameras and also, at the same time, re-confirm its position as a leader in imaging technology and innovation with its smartphones. Currently, the Lumia 1020 is considered by many to be the best camera on a smartphone, and the Lumia 1520, coming shortly to AT&T, will bring a similar experience to a phablet form factor. We've been hearing about RAW image output functionality from Nokia's flagship camera phones for quite some time, and today, the Finns have updated their Nokia Camera app to support just that. The change log is rather ...
