We just sat through what was certainly one of the strangest press events to date, where LG unveiled its latest smartphone, the wildly-rumored G2. Dropping the Optimus moniker, the G2 is the successor to last year's Optimus G, one of LG's more popular smartphones. But how does LG's 2013 flagship compare with its toughest competitors? We'd be lying if we said it was anything but a dream come true … at least on paper. Its True HD IPS+ display measures in at 5.2-inches, diagonally, with a resolution of 1,920 by 1,080 pixels. That's an overall density of 424 pixels per inch. That sort of ...

Since the launch of the Lumia 1020, I have been eagerly awaiting the advertising bonanza that was sure to follow the release of the ultimate smartphone camera ever seen by humans. There was a ton of build up before the event. Balloons, and medals, and tea bags. So I was excited to see what Nokia would bring to the masses to demonstrate the epic that is the Lumia 1020. I'm kinda still waiting. Don't get me wrong, I'm just one guy in one city in the entire world. Sure I watch an unhealthy amount of TV. Yes, I stream gigabytes of Youtube, Netflix, and Vimeo per month. But I'm just one guy. I ...

We're on the eve of the launch of a most significant (if not spec-packed) smartphone, the Moto X. We're hot on the heels of the industry's latest benchmark-juicing scandal with Samsung's Galaxy S 4 tweaking. We're only a week away from seeing what LG has to offer with its G2 (though we already know what accessories it's launching with). And we're not even a week out from the launch of the Nokia Lumia 1020, but we're already in full-on fretting mode about our favorite Finns. That roster would be enough to fuel two podcast episodes this size, to say nothing of listener mail! But thanks to ...

If I were to guess how many times I've given Windows Phone a fair chance, it would be somewhere in the lower double-digits. I'm a sucker for an underdog. I pulled for webOS in its darkest days, and I held onto my BlackBerrys well into 2010. I'm also currently pulling for Jolla's Sailfish OS and the YotaPhone, though the odds are certainly not in their favor. And I'm a fan of using multiple platforms and not cornering myself into a single ecosystem. Yes, using an Android tablet and an Android smartphone or an iPad and an iPhone offers very deep integration – integration you can't get with ...

Nokia's Lumia 1020 is one smartphone with a lot going for it – at the risk of sounding like a broken record, its 41-megapixel PureView sensor makes the phone's imaging capabilities second-to-none, and a number of us here at Pocketnow are big fans of the phone. But beyond all that it can do itself, the 1020's also a strategically important smartphone, and could serve to do wonders for the Windows Phone platform. That is, of course, assuming that the phone's a hit. Though the handset has only just become available, there's already some evidence suggesting it's failing to attract the ...

Reviewing the world's biggest and baddest smartphones is an awesome job, but it can also be a stressful one. Often, the time between review and release is very short, requiring long hours and a little compromise when trying to deliver timely impressions. So it's always a pleasure when, after the initial review but before the Empty Nest and After The Buzz phases, you get to settle in with a review device as your temporary daily driver. It's during this time that the device's personality solidifies, its assets and shortcomings becoming more defined. And, in the case of a smartphone like the ...

Can we start with: "was about darn time!"? We were there in London back in May at the official Lumia 925 unveiling when we were told about this Oggl app from Hipstamatic, that will allow users to (finally) upload their pictures to Instagram, in a more official-appearing way. We were told that it should land soon. Then the Lumia 1020 event arrived and still nothing. As of today (yesterday in some time zones), you can get your Hipstamatic Oggl PRO app from the Windows Store. That is, if you have a Lumia 1020. Strange, because we have a Lumia 925 (remember, it's the Lumia 925 event where ...

If you don't have a Nokia Lumia 1020 you shouldn't care about this one, at least not until Nokia finally pushes out the app to other Lumia devices in its line-up. However, if you were among the first ones to get on the 41-megapixel bandwagon, follow the source link below to update. The latest version of the app adds even more functionality to the already feature-packed app. You will now be able to do bracketing on your pictures. Think of it as "manual HDR", where the camera takes several shots at different exposure levels. You will, however, need to manually merge them on a computer or ...

(Updated 7/29/2013 with additional battery endurance information. See "Performance," below.) The A-10 Thunderbolt II is a ground-attack aircraft operated by the U.S. military. It's big, it's slow, and it's built around a single dominant feature: the 30mm cannon slung under its cockpit. The A-10 is also so ugly that it's one of the few planes in the world known better for its nickname than its official designation: pilots long ago rechristened the ugly bird the "Warthog," and the name stuck. It's anyone's guess what nickname the mass market will give to Nokia's latest Windows Phone ...

To kick off this week's podcast, a few apologies are in order. First, we're sorry we were forced to push the Weekly further and further back until we were backed up against the cold, wet reality of a Friday afternoon - the Lumia 1020, new Nexus 7, HTC 8XT, and about forty other devices landed on our office doorsteps this week, and we're dealing the best we can with the surge. Second, we're sorry we're spending yet another week neglecting the listener-mail inbox. We didn't anticipate today's show running as long as it did (imagine that), so we didn't build it into our planning. That very ...

Watch today's Pocketnow Daily as we talk about some more launch-date plans for the LG G2, which you already assumed after so many leaks. Then let's continue with Samsung as it seems that the Galaxy Note III won't have the fingerprint scanner after all. More rumors of a Nokia 6-inch phablet resurface and we hope it's great. We later talk about the Consumer Reports verdict on the camera of the Nokia Lumia 1020, which we don't agree with. We end today's show talking about the Samsung, HTC and Sony plans for upgrading their smartphone line-up to Android 4.3. All this and more after the break. ...

Expectations for the Nokia Lumia 1020 have been sky-high. Its 41-megapixel PureView sensor sure looks like it will be the envy of every other smartphone around. We've already started putting the 1020 through its paces, bringing you some comparisons against other smartphone heavyweights, and our complete 1020 review will be forthcoming. In the meantime, an early look at imaging performance has called into question some of the 1020's much-touted abilities. Consumer Reports has begun its own series of Lumia 1020 evaluations, and while it hasn't delivered its full analysis either, some early ...

The initial rush of the Nokia Lumia 1020 launch may be gone, but as you may have noticed from our ongoing coverage, the afterglow continues to keep us captivated. We've got our opinions about the phone, sure, and also about what its arrival will mean for Microsoft's ongoing struggles to build out its platform. I've been wondering not only about what effect the 1020's launch will have on user attitudes towards Windows Phone, but how it might effect other manufacturers, as well. After all, the Lumia 1020 sets a pretty darn high bar for the sort of hardware quality Windows Phone can offer. ...

We've put the new PureView Goliath (aka Nokia Lumia 1020) up against its predecessor and we've thrown it into the snake pit with the reigning king of flagship Android sales, the Galaxy S 4. But Samsung isn't the only contender in the high-end Android space, and our 1020 was beckoning us to throw it into the ring with a stouter foe, one with a build that could take a beating. "An aluminum one," our suddenly-creepy imaginary talking Lumia 1020 demanded. Well, we weren't about to ask it twice. That all-seeing PureView crater-eyeball is horrifying. So we tossed the 1020 into the fightin' cage ...

Without a doubt, the Nokia Lumia 1020 was one of the most highly-anticipated smartphones in recent memory. It was rumored – as the EOS – since before December, and we had at least a dozen looks at the device and its innards before Nokia ever made it truly official. Now that it's here, the mood is different. The anticipation is dwindling, and the reality of getting our hands on the first, true PureView Windows Phone is just two days away. (Unless, of course, your name is Michael Fisher and you've been running around with one for a few days. In that case, I will probably hate you until ...

Can this be true? As Brandon and I were discussing Motorola's new Droid line-up, I can't lie, my initial reaction was to not care. I've been so disappointed in the past by last-year's Droids that I really didn't care enough to even gaze at the spec sheet of these phones. I was expecting the same story, where the MAXX was a battery phone, the Ultra was the "so called" flagship and then the mini was just another watered-down variant that's not even worth your consideration. I was wrong. At Pocketnow, most of us have always wanted one type of phone that didn't really exist until now. There's ...

It is here, and it is awesome. That's a little spoiler about our forthcoming Nokia Lumia 1020 review, which we haven't had quite enough time to write just yet. But that doesn't mean you should be deprived of Nokia Lumia 1020 hotness on this bright and beautiful pre-launch Wednesday, now does it? That's the spirit! What follows is an in-depth comparison video documenting the similarities and differences between Nokia's 2012 and 2013 flagship Windows Phones. We'll talk housing humps, design disparities, and just how big the gulf really is between 8.7 and 41 megapixels, and we'll let you ...

Comparisons have been a little rough lately. Nearly every time a cross-platform comparison has come up, we've been forced to pit the newest and hottest Android device up against the impressive but rapidly-aging Lumia 920. And while the 920 is a beast and a tank, and by now accustomed to such treatment ... it's also an object of affection around these parts. So we're very happy to give it a rest. Lay down your camera bezel, Old Reliable. Your relief has finally arrived, and its name be Lumia 1020. But a new flagship means a new comparison with the competing platform's contenders - ...

The Nokia Lumia 1020, formerly known as the Lumia 909, formerly known as the Nokia EOS, formerly known as the biggest and brightest rainbow unicorn in all of Windows Phone land ... is here. The 41MP smartphone arrived at the Boston offices a short while ago, courtesy of the fine folks at AT&T, and it's been waiting patiently to be removed from its packaging ever since. Now, thanks to the magic of editing-assisted time travel and just the barest suspension of disbelief, you can come along for the ride, "live," as we free the Lumia 1020 from its carrier-branded cardboard and power it on ...

The Nokia Lumia 1020 is the most advanced camera phone ever to see the light of day. It's a stunning upgrade to the Lumia 920 and a fitting sequel to the 808 PureView, one whose potential has been met with fairly universal praise from the Pocketnow team, and from most others in the blogosphere. When it launches on Friday, I'll be in line at the AT&T store to claim my very own unit, just as I was for its predecessor. But, as you may recall from the video documenting my launch day Lumia 920 purchase, I was put off back then by a few oversights on AT&T's part - and also by some lapses ...

Online retailer Clove.co.uk announced that the Nokia Lumia 1020 is available for pre-order. However, there's a twist to it: "we have yet to receive pricing or an expected launch date from Nokia", says wording from the e-tailer, but the phone is listed in all three of its colors (black, white, and yellow). Announced in July 11, the Nokia Lumia 1020 packs a 1.5 GHz Snapdragon S4 SoC, and a Windows Phone 8 first, 2GB of RAM. There's also a 4.5-inch 720p display, 2,000mAh battery, and 32GB flash storage. The 41-megapixel camera is present on the back, but, despite of its size, the phone is ...

Never let it be said that Multimedia Manager Jaime Rivera isn't a trouper. In the hot Honduras heat, with no power and no A/C (and, incidentally, no shirt), he still manages to show up on-time to the Pocketnow Weekly podcast. That right there is some broadcast heroism, folks. No matter what Taylor Martin's new-office excuses are. But that's not what we're here to talk about. No, we're about a week overdue for an audio-only examination of Nokia's newest flagship, the Lumia 1020: we'll cover it's high, low, and so-so points, and debate just how much action a phone has to bring to be worth ...

Pre-orders for the Nokia Lumia 1020 have begun. After all the waiting, the opportunity has finally arrived to get your hands on the smartphone with the best camera performance to date. I've been eagerly anticipating this event, because as far as I'm concerned, the days and weeks that follow are going to go a long way towards dictating the ultimate fate of Windows Phone: basically, that if something as awesome as the 1020 can't be a hit, Microsoft may as well throw in the towel. Since I'm placing so much importance on 1020 sales performance, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that the ...

For a company that's been so enthusiastic about releasing a colorful assortment of smartphones, Nokia's latest Lumia 1020 sure feels like it comes up a little short, available only in yellow or neutral notes. That's what made it so interesting to see the above render arrive this morning, apparently showing off the 1020 in red. At least, that may be what we're looking at. The tweet @evleaks used to publish the picture sure seems to insinuate that even he may be unsure as to whether or not this reflects any plans to actually produce such a model – or even if the render is official. For ...
