When I entered the AT&T store on July 26, I wasn't totally convinced I would keep the Lumia 1020 for more than a few days. I wanted to try the camera out for myself, but I had expressed by lack of faith in Windows Phone several times here on the site. To date, I've tried Windows Phone more times than I can count on my fingers, and every time the result was effectively the same: the software was kind of boring and the app situation was awful. The painstakingly slow resume times were fixed in the last few updates, and the home screen was given a few more customization options, such as ...

If you're on the hunt for a top-of-the-line Android smartphone in the latter half of 2013, you've got a solid set of options. For fans of lightweight, fully-featured pocket computers, the Galaxy S 4 from Samsung is probably a solid bet. For those who prize build quality and aesthetics more highly than expandability, the HTC One is a better fit. And for those who value a feature-loaded experience on one-of-a-kind (but not at all outlandish) hardware, we're quickly learning that the LG G2 serves that niche pretty well. Our full review of the G2 will be up shortly to further examine its ...

There was once a time where I knew exactly what my next smartphone would be at any given time. Back in the day, I was a huge fan of BlackBerry, and although there were much better options around the time the BlackBerry Tour 9630 hit Verizon shelves in July 2009, I didn't want anything drastically different from before. My last smartphone purchase at the time was the BlackBerry Curve 8330, which I had nearly carried for two years. Not long after I purchased the Tour, however, the smartphone market expanded, accelerated, and matured. It was as if it all happened overnight. New Android phones ...

We apologize for the late upload. We ran into lots of technical difficulties that delayed this video significantly. Watch today's Pocketnow Daily as we talk about Microsoft's Surface 2 event, and some new rumors about the tablets to be announced. We then talk about Amazon and the sad confirmation that their rumors of a free phone are not going to happen. Then it's Nokia talk as we go through some leaked photos of the Lumia 1520, aside from a good price drop in the Lumia 1020 on AT&T. We follow with the sad news that FCC Nexus 5 leaks were really of another device from LG. We end ...

As much as we all either love or want Nokia's powerhouse camera with a phone, or what some know as the Lumia 1020, we also know that a lot of you find the price after a contract to be a barrier. In a market where every other flagship with a more-populare operating system is retailed for $100 less, it's clear that the competitive grounds give people reasons to think again about Nokia's offering. The great thing is that competition is always something that benefits consumers. You can now pick-up the Nokia Lumia 1020 on AT&T for just $199 after a two-year contract, and if you want a free ...

When it comes to promoting your smartphone, you can spend all day extolling its virtues, educating the public as to its new features, and making the handset seem as attractive as possible. But for all you can say about how great your own phone is on its own merits, sometimes the most powerful messages come when you start challenging the competition. We've seen plenty of attack ads over the years, and while there have been some really great videos produced, some of our favorites have been when billboard ads start going up against one another – remember when LG elbowed-in on Samsung's ...

Watch today's Pocketnow Daily as we talk about Amazon's fire sale on none-other than their Kindle Fire line-up. Later we talk about Samsung's plan to probably launch Tizen in the next couple of months. The Sony Honami is next as the company has begun teasing the device and calling it their company's best. We later go through some reports that the iPhone 5S and 5C might be launched on the last days of September. We end today's show talking about Microsoft's new ad, which again bashes iOS and Android, but this time, in a smarter way. All this and more after the break. Stories: - Amazon ...

Advertising sells smartphones, and when you really want to engage your audience in a memorable way, that often means taking a few swings at your competitors in the process. Back in April we got to check out a well-done Microsoft spot for Windows Phone and the Lumia 920, poking tons of fun at iPhone and Android users and all of their idiosyncrasies. Now Microsoft's back with more of the same, producing a new video for the Lumia 1020. As a spiritual sequel to that 920 wedding-themed video, this new 1020 bit at a elementary school recital doesn't waste too much time before quickly devolving ...

When companies fight, customers (usually) lose - but podcasters win, big time. On this episode of the Pocketnow Weekly, we'll be reaping some of the few benefits of the great Google-Microsoft battle of 2013: namely, the ability to piss and moan and armchair-quarterback. Fortunately, we've got plenty of ammunition for the discussion, as we're also fresh from customizing our own Moto X devices, re-reviewing the Surface RT, and observing the initial, wobbly launch efforts behind the ATIV S Neo - not to mention wildly speculating about the almost-certainly-fictitious HTC One (Windows Phone 8 ...

For the last four years, save for a few different models, practically every smartphone started to look the same and came in a very limited choice in color (or lack thereof, technically): black or white. And in the last year or so, several OEMs have started to "revolutionize" the industry by offering a marginally broader selection of colors. Nokia has introduced a handful of different models with some standardized color options: candy red, yellow, cyan, white, and black. HTC also jumped on the colored bandwagon with its Windows Phone models, offering red, yellow, blue, purple, black, and ...

Nokia's Lumia 1020 is capable of some incredible photos. We've shared some of our own favorite shots, given the device the full review treatment, and even put it up against its prototype PureView progenitor, and we still can't get enough: we just love snapping shots with this photographic overachiever. If you want to learn how to take some of your own top-notch photos, you've got a two-item to-do list to tackle: first, read Adam Lein's crash course on 1020 photography, and second: buy yourself a Nokia Camera Grip accessory. Yeah, we know - we've just spoiled the review video below. But ...

If you thought the Palm commercials of 2009 were as weird as mobile tech advertising would ever get, HTC and Robert Downey Jr. have something to show you. That's the conversation that kicks off this week's edition of the Pocketnow Weekly podcast, and it's followed by some heartening news about this year's IFA in Berlin. If the rumors hold true, we should be in for some powerfully geeky, if unconventional, tech in Germany this year - and even if they don't, we've got plenty to talk about in the way of chipsets, Nexii, smartwatches, and phablets. If none of those terms make sense to you, ...

The Nokia Lumia 1020 is arguably the best camera-phone money can buy today. It's been available in the US through AT&T and we've covered every aspect of it, extensively, here on Pocketnow. The phone is expected to be available in Europe soon but, until then, it just made a stop in China. It goes for RMB 5,999, which translates roughly to $970. The price is for the unlocked unit and is roughly the same price tag that Apple asks for its unlocked iPhone5 with 32GB of storage in China. To find out more details about the phone, make sure to read our full review, and see how its camera ...

Shortly after meeting him in person for the first time at IFA 2012, I sat in a Berlin bar with Managing Editor Anton D. Nagy and we talked about our hopes for the future of smartphones. He'd just given me a gander at his prize Nokia 808 PureView, and despite its bulk and its dated software platform, I wanted it. More precisely: I wanted a Windows Phone version of it. Fast forward to MWC 2013. Anton and I were again sharing a couple end-of-the-day drinks, this time in a hotel room in Barcelona, and talking about our expectations for that show on a special-edition episode of the Pocketnow ...

The Lumia 1020 continues to be one of the most talked about phones, despite the handful of newer phones being announced and made official. Its camera puts the phone on a pedestal and in a league of its own. We've reviewed it, we've written about it, and we've shot various videos on it. We're also in the process of comparing the two 41-megapixel smartphone cameras against one another in an in-depth camera comparison. But after a few weeks of several Pocketnow editors carrying the Lumia 1020 as a personal phone, how do we feel about it, individually? Below are the thoughts of Adam Lein, ...
