With so many questions day by day about viewers still considering a Galaxy Note 3 or a Google Nexus 5, we know the ropes are complicated this holiday season if you’re close to being eligible for a phone-swap. 2013 has shown just how great technology can evolve in mobile, and there’s a lot to choose from. Most of us would even agree that the smartphones that have been launched in the last six months are dramatically superior in many areas, when compared to previous times. As of today, it has been exactly one month since I've carried the Lumia 1020. October 11 was the day Automatic arrived, the (as of now) iOS-only OBD-II module which feeds all sorts of information from your vehicle straight into your phone. At the time, I was still working on the AT&T Galaxy Note 3 review, so I had to sideline the 1020 in favor of the iPhone and juggle reviews. As much as I hated to power the 1020 off and toss it in my bag (which, in hindsight, was a terrible idea), it was a long time coming. I remember the Lumia 1020 announcement and how excited everyone was. It had ...

As we spent the morning anticipating on the latest episode of the Pocketnow Weekly podcast, Google's long-awaited Nexus 5 finally got itself announced today. It was a long slog; even earlier today, as the minutes turned to hours and all those "confirmations" started dissolving into the nothingness from whence they came, it was looking like yet another false alarm. But just as we were starting to retool for a November 1 release date, the Nexus 5 hit the Google Play Store. And when units finally start arriving at buyer doorsteps over the next few days, they'll come packing a feature that I ...

It happens to the most of us: shoot that perfect picture, say goodbye to the moment, and when you revisit the image you just snapped, oh snap, it's out of focus. Nokia seems to have a solution ready with the Refocus feature we've been hearing about since Abu Dhabi. Sami Niemi, Nokia’s director of Capture & Relive software product management, explains: “Nokia Refocus captures different images over the entire focus range. What this means is that you don’t have to worry about getting your shot in focus before you take a photo. You just capture your image first and then play with ...

...and as AT&T is preparing to welcome the Lumia 1520 to its line-up, the current king of camera phones, the Lumia 1020 -- let's not argue about it vs the 808 PureView -- is getting a neat price-cut on Amazon for the carrier flavor. $299.99, with a two-year contract, is what AT&T was asking for the phone initially, and, that's now down $200 for $99.99. If the Lumia 1020 is a phone you'd like to rock for two years, hop over to the source links below, and you can grab one really cheap from Amazon. You can choose from black, white, and yellow color options. Source: Amazon (Black, ...

Some of you might have already noticed that a certain Nokia Camera application will be installed instead of the Nokia Pro Camera on your Lumia 1020 phones. The new app combines the Pro Camera and Smart Camera separate applications into a single one, and, also brings some improvements like the ability to choose quickly between three presets: Auto, Sports, and Night. The app can be downloaded from the Store for Nokia Lumia 1020 and Lumia 925 phones, and, will come pre-installed on the brand new Lumia 1520. With the roll-out of the Nokia Lumia Black update -- formerly known as Bittersweet ...

Today's all about news from two companies: Nokia and Apple. As they fight for headline dominance, we learn about a separate little incident where Nokia managed to turn a minor Apple scandal into some good PR for itself. This all started late last month, when Apple got its hands on a video originally filmed by Casey Neistat. His six-minute piece documented Apple fans waiting in line for the launch of the iPhone 5S, culminating in the smartphone's retail launch. Apple stumbled across the video on YouTube, and decided to co-opt it for its own purposes. It took the original, which raised some ...

There comes a time when you just gotta do what the readers want. Particularly when their demands are awesome. You tweeted, you pleaded, you emailed, you told us in person at trade shows and during mildly creepy public run-ins: "have Marques Brownlee on the Weekly!" you demanded. And after weeks of dancing around schedules, overseas trips, and major product releases, we've finally managed to make it happen. For the first time in recorded history, MKBHD and Pocketnow have collaborated to bring you two full hours of audio-podcast goodness. That sounds a lot more grandiose than three guys ...

The polycarbonate Nokia has a penchant for using has a reputation for standing the test of time exceedingly well. The matte finish may tend to gain a certain sheen as the finish wears some, but we've seen a few times before that it's quite resilient against bumps, dings, and scratches. We were, however, somewhat concerned that the abnormally large camera hump would be susceptible to scrapes and scratching. How has the Lumia 1020 fared in our two months with it? Has it resisted scratches, dents, dings, and other blemishes well? Watch the Lumia 1020 durability report below to see for ...

When I entered the AT&T store on July 26, I wasn't totally convinced I would keep the Lumia 1020 for more than a few days. I wanted to try the camera out for myself, but I had expressed by lack of faith in Windows Phone several times here on the site. To date, I've tried Windows Phone more times than I can count on my fingers, and every time the result was effectively the same: the software was kind of boring and the app situation was awful. The painstakingly slow resume times were fixed in the last few updates, and the home screen was given a few more customization options, such as ...

If you're on the hunt for a top-of-the-line Android smartphone in the latter half of 2013, you've got a solid set of options. For fans of lightweight, fully-featured pocket computers, the Galaxy S 4 from Samsung is probably a solid bet. For those who prize build quality and aesthetics more highly than expandability, the HTC One is a better fit. And for those who value a feature-loaded experience on one-of-a-kind (but not at all outlandish) hardware, we're quickly learning that the LG G2 serves that niche pretty well. Our full review of the G2 will be up shortly to further examine its ...

There was once a time where I knew exactly what my next smartphone would be at any given time. Back in the day, I was a huge fan of BlackBerry, and although there were much better options around the time the BlackBerry Tour 9630 hit Verizon shelves in July 2009, I didn't want anything drastically different from before. My last smartphone purchase at the time was the BlackBerry Curve 8330, which I had nearly carried for two years. Not long after I purchased the Tour, however, the smartphone market expanded, accelerated, and matured. It was as if it all happened overnight. New Android phones ...

We apologize for the late upload. We ran into lots of technical difficulties that delayed this video significantly. Watch today's Pocketnow Daily as we talk about Microsoft's Surface 2 event, and some new rumors about the tablets to be announced. We then talk about Amazon and the sad confirmation that their rumors of a free phone are not going to happen. Then it's Nokia talk as we go through some leaked photos of the Lumia 1520, aside from a good price drop in the Lumia 1020 on AT&T. We follow with the sad news that FCC Nexus 5 leaks were really of another device from LG. We end ...

As much as we all either love or want Nokia's powerhouse camera with a phone, or what some know as the Lumia 1020, we also know that a lot of you find the price after a contract to be a barrier. In a market where every other flagship with a more-populare operating system is retailed for $100 less, it's clear that the competitive grounds give people reasons to think again about Nokia's offering. The great thing is that competition is always something that benefits consumers. You can now pick-up the Nokia Lumia 1020 on AT&T for just $199 after a two-year contract, and if you want a free ...

When it comes to promoting your smartphone, you can spend all day extolling its virtues, educating the public as to its new features, and making the handset seem as attractive as possible. But for all you can say about how great your own phone is on its own merits, sometimes the most powerful messages come when you start challenging the competition. We've seen plenty of attack ads over the years, and while there have been some really great videos produced, some of our favorites have been when billboard ads start going up against one another – remember when LG elbowed-in on Samsung's ...
