Nokia's Lumia 1020 was easily one of the most impressive smartphones of 2013. Better yet, it's one of the more innovative handsets of the decade, with its 41-megapixel image sensor, paired with optical image stabilization. Its solid design and Nokia's reputation for quality didn't hurt matters either. However, CDMA users have been left mostly to feed on the Windows Phone scraps of late, and Nokia stepped up to the plate with yet another stellar entry, the Lumia Icon for Verizon Wireless. With specifications that rival even some of the most popular and powerful Android handsets, it's sure ...

So, I’ve got good news and bad news for you. The good news is that I’ve eliminated one of the three phones I’ve been debating for my forthcoming new phone purchase: The Lumia 1020. I’m sorry, bring me your torch. The Tribe has spoken. “But Adam! You’re a Windows Phone fan! How can this be? I hate you you lousy son of a…” Trust me people, I get it. I really want a 41 megapixel camera. I do, I do. But it’s just not enough to fork over ~$400 just to upgrade one component of my phone. Here’s a little background. I am currently toting a yellow AT&T Lumia 920 as my daily ...

If you have an Apple iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S, chances are you're waiting for the iPhone 6 to come out, as you've probably skipped both the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s. If you have a Galaxy S II from Samsung, you should be excited about the MWC Unpacked event where the S 5 might land, as you apparently skipped the S III and S 4. However, Microsoft wants to take advantage of your hesitation and has an offer which you should definitely consider if you are willing to give Windows Phone, and its surrounding ecosystem, a chance. If you trade in your iPhone 4, iPhone 4s or Galaxy S2, you can get a ...

You really have to use the Nokia Lumia 1020 in order to experience the quality of the images it generates, and to understand and leverage the creative power that it lends you. However, comparing it to a dSLR, and even saying it is better than one, is a statement some of you might agree with, while some will shake their heads disapprovingly. Nokia thinks the Lumia 1020 is the way to go, and you all should just forget about dSLRs and professional lenses. Check out their reasons in the video below. But before you do, Nokia and AT&T have taken this opportunity to discount the phone on the ...

It’s a question familiar to anyone in the business of reviewing smartphones: “Nice review, but what phone do you carry?” Emphasis on the you. From a personal perspective, no matter how many times it’s posed, I don’t mind being asked the question. It’s a constant reminder that my day job is in fact my dream job (literally; I still have dreams about meeting tech personalities whom I’ve long followed), and that people find my opinions worth something. So on a selfish level, I’m thankful for the validation. I imagine the same thing happens most everywhere commentators offer ...

Most new device launches go the same way: usually the press gets review units before they’re widely available, and we get to use them for a few days -or a week if we’re lucky- as we work on our review. Then press day arrives. The embargo on media coverage lifts, and everyone posts their reviews and videos at the same time. It’s a huge frenzy, commenters go nuts, and it’s a giant explosion of frantic opinion-sharing activity. For about … a day. And then it all goes away. Sure, there’s followup coverage as people find bugs and hidden features, but after that initial blast, not ...

Nokia's offered its users plenty of reasons to look forward to its new Lumia Black software update. Indeed, the problem hasn't been a lack of features, but simply getting your hands on the software; the Lumia 1520 runs Black out of the box, and we saw AT&T start delivering Black to Lumia 1020 owners in the States, but what of international users, not to mention those who have all these other Lumia models? The New Year passed without an answer, but today we finally see Nokia start opening the tap, as Lumia Black updates start coming to Lumia 925 and 1020 phones across the globe. Don't ...

The Nokia Lumia 1020 just received an update last week that enables RAW Adobe DNG file format support when taking photos. There is a new option that you can select in the Nokia Camera app's settings area. It's not on by default of course, but the new option enables each shot to save a 5 megapixel JPG plus a full resolution 38 megapixel Adobe Digital Negative RAW file. Now before you go turning it on and trying it out, in order to take advantage of the RAW file format, you'll need a good RAW image editor on your PC. Personally, I prefer the Adobe Camera RAW plug-in for Photoshop and Bridge, ...

Remember a month ago when we told you about the RAW photo support coming to Nokia Lumia phones? An update to Nokia Camera delivered compatibility with Digital Negative files, but there was a hitch: the handset needed the new Nokia Lumia Black update to function. That wasn't an issue for the 1520, but the 1020, with its 41-megapxiel PureView sensor just aching to snap some RAW shots, still hadn't seen Lumia Black become available. Thankfully, that's now changing, as AT&T starts making the software available to its users. AT&T appears to be first out of the gate with this release, ...

The year is quickly coming to a close, and looking back, it's safe to say this has been the year of smartphone cameras. HTC, Samsung, Nokia, Motorola, LG, Sony, and several others have tried their hand at innovating the next breakthrough in camera technology, creating the perfect balance of mobility, pocketability, and image quality. Some, obviously, did better than others. HTC, for one, proved that while the image sensor on the One wasn't the best in the industry, it's meager 4-megapixel sensor packed a serious punch. LG managed to create one of the most balanced mobile cameras to date ...

Nokia is constantly trying to improve its flagship cameras and also, at the same time, re-confirm its position as a leader in imaging technology and innovation with its smartphones. Currently, the Lumia 1020 is considered by many to be the best camera on a smartphone, and the Lumia 1520, coming shortly to AT&T, will bring a similar experience to a phablet form factor. We've been hearing about RAW image output functionality from Nokia's flagship camera phones for quite some time, and today, the Finns have updated their Nokia Camera app to support just that. The change log is rather ...

Bluetooth LE was rumored, back in summer, to come to Lumia Windows Phones as part of the Amber software update. If you have a Lumia 520, 620, 625, or 720, and it is running Amber, you are already able to benefit from the Low Energy protocols. According to a Nokia FAQ page, "with Lumia Black software update, Bluetooth LE will be enabled across the full WP8 Lumia range." That's exciting if you are using accessories paired to your phone, like heart-rate monitors, and alike. As a reminder, Bluetooth LE enables users, according to the FAQ page mentioned above, to use such accessories for a long ...

It's not Lytro-like light-field camera, but it's as close as it gets, on your regular smartphone, given it is powered by Windows Phone, and it's a Lumia made by Nokia. The Refocus app from Nokia is now available and it allows you to basically snap a picture now, without worrying about focus, and focus on objects later, again and again. In order to get the best results, you should aim to capture "scenes with a great contrast in the depth of field, like macro shots". The way this works is simple: Nokia Refocus captures two-to-eight independent images of the scene, each at five megapixels, ...

As of today, it has been exactly one month since I've carried the Lumia 1020. October 11 was the day Automatic arrived, the (as of now) iOS-only OBD-II module which feeds all sorts of information from your vehicle straight into your phone. At the time, I was still working on the AT&T Galaxy Note 3 review, so I had to sideline the 1020 in favor of the iPhone and juggle reviews. As much as I hated to power the 1020 off and toss it in my bag (which, in hindsight, was a terrible idea), it was a long time coming. I remember the Lumia 1020 announcement and how excited everyone was. It had ...
