As efforts like After The Buzz, the Pocketnow U-Review, and Empty Nest demonstrate, we’re constantly searching for fresh ways to review mobile technology. The newest product of those efforts is Pocketnow’s “Review Rebuttal” series, in which a member of our team is assigned to test a smartphone or tablet that’s already gone through our standard review process. While the resulting video or editorial doesn’t affect the “official” Pocketnow review score, we hope it provides added context by showcasing an editor’s personal opinion, rather than a team-wide consensus. We call it ...

Nokia's Lumia 1020 is the smartphone camera heavyweight to beat. With its just-announced Galaxy S 5, Samsung upgrades its flagship from a 13MP to 16-megapixel camera, while throwing in a bunch of new shooting modes and some impressive abilities like a super-fast autofocus. Will that be enough for the GS5 to give the 1020 a run for its money? We put these two handsets head-to-head at the MWC in Barcelona this evening to find out. Then again, aside from their better-than-average cameras, these phones are in many ways apples and oranges, with different focuses placed on design, hardware ...

"Wow. That Nokia XL is big." That's the first thought that hit my lobes when this hands-on comparison started playing on my monitor, but it certainly wasn't the last. Because while the 4.5-to-5-inch jump in screen size is one of the more instantly recognizable differences between Nokia's Windows Phone flagship and its new Android-powered phone for "the next billion," it's the least significant. Tune in to the side-by-side video below to see the Windows Phone-powered 1020 placed alongside the Nokia XL's tile-centric build of Android for a quick look at how the former has influenced the ...

Samsung isn't the only company getting us pumped-up for its MWC event early next week, and as we finish trying to read meaning into all the imagery it threw at us in its own teaser video, we have a couple more companies generating interest for their own MWC events, with new teasers from Nokia and Sony arriving. Sony isn't expected to have new hardware that's quite as buzz-worthy as Nokia's or Samsung's, but there are at least a couple models we're looking forward to, including that second-gen Xperia Tablet Z. But you wouldn't be able to guess that from this teaser (above), as it's just ...

Nokia's Lumia 1020 was easily one of the most impressive smartphones of 2013. Better yet, it's one of the more innovative handsets of the decade, with its 41-megapixel image sensor, paired with optical image stabilization. Its solid design and Nokia's reputation for quality didn't hurt matters either. However, CDMA users have been left mostly to feed on the Windows Phone scraps of late, and Nokia stepped up to the plate with yet another stellar entry, the Lumia Icon for Verizon Wireless. With specifications that rival even some of the most popular and powerful Android handsets, it's sure ...

So, I’ve got good news and bad news for you. The good news is that I’ve eliminated one of the three phones I’ve been debating for my forthcoming new phone purchase: The Lumia 1020. I’m sorry, bring me your torch. The Tribe has spoken. “But Adam! You’re a Windows Phone fan! How can this be? I hate you you lousy son of a…” Trust me people, I get it. I really want a 41 megapixel camera. I do, I do. But it’s just not enough to fork over ~$400 just to upgrade one component of my phone. Here’s a little background. I am currently toting a yellow AT&T Lumia 920 as my daily ...

If you have an Apple iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S, chances are you're waiting for the iPhone 6 to come out, as you've probably skipped both the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s. If you have a Galaxy S II from Samsung, you should be excited about the MWC Unpacked event where the S 5 might land, as you apparently skipped the S III and S 4. However, Microsoft wants to take advantage of your hesitation and has an offer which you should definitely consider if you are willing to give Windows Phone, and its surrounding ecosystem, a chance. If you trade in your iPhone 4, iPhone 4s or Galaxy S2, you can get a ...

You really have to use the Nokia Lumia 1020 in order to experience the quality of the images it generates, and to understand and leverage the creative power that it lends you. However, comparing it to a dSLR, and even saying it is better than one, is a statement some of you might agree with, while some will shake their heads disapprovingly. Nokia thinks the Lumia 1020 is the way to go, and you all should just forget about dSLRs and professional lenses. Check out their reasons in the video below. But before you do, Nokia and AT&T have taken this opportunity to discount the phone on the ...

It’s a question familiar to anyone in the business of reviewing smartphones: “Nice review, but what phone do you carry?” Emphasis on the you. From a personal perspective, no matter how many times it’s posed, I don’t mind being asked the question. It’s a constant reminder that my day job is in fact my dream job (literally; I still have dreams about meeting tech personalities whom I’ve long followed), and that people find my opinions worth something. So on a selfish level, I’m thankful for the validation. I imagine the same thing happens most everywhere commentators offer ...

Most new device launches go the same way: usually the press gets review units before they’re widely available, and we get to use them for a few days -or a week if we’re lucky- as we work on our review. Then press day arrives. The embargo on media coverage lifts, and everyone posts their reviews and videos at the same time. It’s a huge frenzy, commenters go nuts, and it’s a giant explosion of frantic opinion-sharing activity. For about … a day. And then it all goes away. Sure, there’s followup coverage as people find bugs and hidden features, but after that initial blast, not ...

Nokia's offered its users plenty of reasons to look forward to its new Lumia Black software update. Indeed, the problem hasn't been a lack of features, but simply getting your hands on the software; the Lumia 1520 runs Black out of the box, and we saw AT&T start delivering Black to Lumia 1020 owners in the States, but what of international users, not to mention those who have all these other Lumia models? The New Year passed without an answer, but today we finally see Nokia start opening the tap, as Lumia Black updates start coming to Lumia 925 and 1020 phones across the globe. Don't ...

The smartphone you carry on New Year's Eve has a big say in how the night will be remembered. (And not just because it's an opportunity to show off your newest holiday acquisition to your friends, you materialistic fop.) If you take pictures with your smartphone even semi-regularly, you're bound to do it twice as often on a landmark event like New Year's Eve - and so the phone you carry will play a big role in how well the evening is documented. As tech reporters, the Pocketnow review team is lucky enough to have access to a slew of purchased and loaner smartphones, and while we're all old ...
