Last year, the J Butterfly kick-started it all. Rumors of a next-generation HTC device had been surfacing around the Web for months, alleging that Verizon would carry HTC's 5-inch super phone, dubbed the DLX (or the HTC Deluxe). Several renders and images of the device had leaked, so we knew there was some truth to the rumors and already had a pretty good idea what the phone would look like. Then, out of nowhere, the J Butterfly was announced for Japan. The leaks showed a device bearing the Verizon branding, so it was fairly obvious the same device (with a few modifications) would come ...

Let more of the rumors we want to read begin. Just when you were wondering what HTC's strategy for 2013 would be, we got an early glimpse at a more aggressive company during the year, and now some more leaks confirm the rumors. If each of the following lines stands for a specific smartphone or variant, we're looking at a 2013 with as many as 35 devices. Again, we don't expect HTC to launch five different M7 models for example, but they'll definitely launch the M7 in different variants that make it compatible with specific LTE carriers, sine we already know that LTE is still a nightmare. ...

Watch today's Pocketnow Daily as we go through our initial coverage of the much-anticipated Samsung ATIV S. Then we go through more Samsung news, only that this time with some unexpected, and not-so-stellar Galaxy Grand announcement. Then we talk about the HTC M7 leaks along with the bad news that the HTC Butterfly won't reach Europe. Google makes the news afterwards as their Play Store fills our Christmas hopes with lots of deals until January 1st 2013. We end today's show talking about Nokia's plans to bring Windows Phone 7.8 to previous Lumia devices, and the news aren't good. All this ...

Normally, a company launching a variant of an already-released smartphone isn't huge news. Variations on a common theme are business-as-usual in the mobile tech world, not blockbuster paradigm shifts -- especially as mobile offerings grow more and more streamlined across different carriers and markets. Sometimes, though, a handset comes along that deserves special mention. The new Butterfly, quietly unveiled just this morning on HTC's website, is one of those devices. It's a new variant of the design that served as the basis for Japan's Butterfly J and the impressive Droid DNA for ...

We say it so often on the Pocketnow Weekly podcast that it's become something of a cliché: we really, really want HTC to succeed. The company has been at the forefront of our technology consciousness  for only a few years in its current incarnation, but long before it was "HTC," it built devices as an ODM for other corporations. Devices like the PPC-6700, my first true PocketPC. Devices like the Treo Pro, which helped Palm survive its leap to a new platform (albeit briefly). And since striking out on its own, the company has altered the landscape with game-changing devices like the G1, ...

Watch today's Pocketnow Daily as we talk about our full hands-on of T-Mobile's new Samsung Galaxy Note II. Then we go through the recent leaks of a Galaxy Note II variant coming to Verizon with some awkward branding changes. We later talk about the LG Spectrum 2 which will probably shine as a good product, but which is sadly no Optimus G variant for Verizon. Then we go through the new leaks of the HTC J Butterfly now being dubbed the HTC Droid DNA in Verizon and no longer the DIX or DLX. We end today's show by talking about Apple's launch of the iPad mini and the surprise of a ...

Full-1080p HD is coming to your smartphone! So break out the party hats and rent a pony, because the whole world's about to cha-- oh, forget it. As I -and several of my companions- have mentioned more than once on the Pocketnow Weekly podcast, I can't even pretend to be interested in this. Let's start with the facts. This isn't the first time we've talked about full-HD displays, but it's much more relevant today. Formerly the exclusive domain of speculative "someone will be crazy enough to do it someday" conversations, 1080p smartphone displays are now in the spotlight in a very real way. ...

"Once we get a slow news week, we're gonna talk about this in-depth." That's been the go-to fallback phrase for the Pocketnow Weekly for the past few weeks, and as the holiday shopping season approaches, we doubt that's going to change anytime soon. On this installment of the densest podcast in mobile tech, we talk about the LG Optimus G and the Nexus 4, HTC's new Butterfly J, Apple's forthcoming iPad Mini, and the Microsoft Surface pre-orders and pricing. Plus, Brandon Miniman continues last week's riffing regarding pen-based input methods, and special guest Joe Levi the Android Guy, ...
