Despite a few misgivings about how the iPhone 5C may be doing, Apple's recent sales have seemed to be extremely strong, and the iPhone 5S launch went over like hotcakes. But just how crazy good has Apple's business actually been doing? Today, the company's latest quarterly figures are out, ready for us to start digging through. Let's start with a little context. Over this period last year, Apple had revenue of around $36 billion, and of that made an $8.2 billion profit. For the same quarter this year, Apple brought in $37.5 billion, though now only sees $7.5 billion in profit. Still, those ...

For the past several weeks, we've been hearing a lot of chatter about the iPhone 5C, and how it may not be living up to expectations. First there was word that Apple had moved to scale-back production of the 5C, only churning out half as many units as it previously had been. That general idea was later reinforced by a separate Wall Street Journal report, but that one disagreed on the specifics, claiming that Apple has instead slowed-down production of the 5C by closer to twenty percent. As we continue to try and get a more solid read on just how Apple's new smartphones are doing, new ...

We don't ask very much from the systems controlling touch input on our smartphones. They need to be low-latency and accurate – beyond that, it's up to the processor to make sense of those inputs, and the GPU to display any appropriate output on-screen. But so long as touch controllers hit those two notes, we're good to go. Unfortunately, it looks like the latest iPhones may not be quite as accurate with recording touches as they could be, at least according to the research done by OptoFidelity. The company used an automated system to test touchscreen accuracy, employing a ...

Fun fact: flame wars, petty bickering, and troll hijinks aren't just confined to the online world; they find a ready home in corporate tactics as well. That's a reality we were reminded of this week, as Apple announced its new iPad family on the same day Nokia unveiled not just its first Windows-based tablet, but also the first-ever Windows Phone phablets, at its Nokia World event in Abu Dhabi. Predictably, the Apple news obliterated Nokia's announcement in the news cycle - but, the Pocketnow Weekly being a platform-agnostic, equal-opportunity podcast, we're gonna cover both new device ...

Apple hasn't really been doing the best job in having enough iPhone 5S' to satisfy demand, and on the other hand, they're overstocked of all the iPhone 5C units that they haven't been able to sell. While the excessive demand of their higher-end model is normal, this hasn't stopped the Cupertino kids from expanding the demand of their iPhone internationally, and notice I say demand and not sales, and now it seems that the time has come for other US carriers. As of November 8th you can choose to join the list of people that will have to wait for the iPhone 5S at US Cellular, or you could ...

Pocketnow Daily gets an average of 300 to 500 comments a day, and sometimes even a thousand. We’d like to thank you all for participating in our question of the day, and we love your feedback so much, that we decided that since we can’t respond to ever single one of your comments, we should at least feature a couple in a weekly video. This is the Pocketnow Daily Recap. Since we only have 3 minutes on every Daily video to go through the hottest news, the weekly recap will serve as a more extensive discussion where we also include your thoughts on the subject. Sadly, for the sake of ...

Some interesting news have just happened, as the US Patent office has decided to uphold the patent No. 7,479,949 after pretty much invalidating it in December of 2012. Why is this important? Well if we all remember the Apple vs Samsung trial, among other lawsuits that included Palm and HTC, Apple has actually won cases against Samsung because of this particular patent, and it has been key in banning Samsung products years ago. This patent focuses on the iPhone's capability to ignore unintended swipes while you scroll from top to bottom or left to right. You'll notice that if you start ...

Everyone looks for different things in a smartphone. Maybe you care about high-speed data, while your friend might be more concerned with the availability of certain key apps. That makes it difficult to give one-size-fits-all opinions on phones, but we sure endeavor to do our best, particularly through our Scored for Me matrix. But even with all these differences of opinion, we still expect certain trends to show through: no one's going to argue that the LG Optimus F5 is the superior phone to the G2, for instance. That's why Consumer Reports is getting a lot of attention this week, after ...

Apple's iPhone 5C is basically last year's iPhone 5, in a plastic casing, instead of the high-quality aluminum body you are by now used to; that's not to say the iPhone 5C is not premium: it's just aluminum vs this year's plastic. Compared to the iPhone 5S, this year's flagship, the 5C is "the lower end phone", and that, according to reports, reflect in poorer sales. The Wall Street Journal report is citing anonymous sources and "people familiar with the matters", claiming that Apple has allegedly contacted its suppliers with smaller orders and subsequently, a reduction of these, for the ...

Going in to this year's iPhone launch, it was sounding like the more affordable iPhone 5C might be the big winner. While it's basically last year's hardware, stock problems with the 5S made the 5C a lot more accessible, and it seemed like plenty of people would be snatching them up, just to get their hands on a new iPhone – any new iPhone. But now as Apple gets production more in line with demand and readies to make its new iPhones available to shoppers in dozens of additional countries, is it already seeing a decline in interest in the iPhone 5C? That's what one rumor suggests, claiming ...

When Michael told me he was looking forward to reviewing the iPhone 5C, I frankly got exited with him. He's always been a fan of "the underdog" platforms, and if we all remember, that's precisely what iPhones were back in 2007. Obviously times have changed dramatically even for Apple's own estimates, and I guess that's just another one of the reasons why he feels that the iPhone is just not for him after he finished his review. Now, one of the coolest things about us in Pocketnow, is that we all come from dramatically different backgrounds, we live in very different places, and we're also ...
