The idea of an iPad mini 2 seemed so simple: take the first iPad mini we like so much, then give it a higher-resolution Retina-quality display, and maybe bump it up to Apple's SoC du jour. Then just a few weeks ago we got tossed a bit of a curve ball, with a new rumor claiming that a display upgrade wasn't necessarily a key part of the mini 2 – that is, while we might get a tablet just like we were expecting, there could also be a new iPad mini that doesn't get a Retina screen. Sure enough, we're back in that neighborhood today, upon the discovery of some iOS 7 files that might just ...

The year started off so strongly when it came to rumors of the follow-up to Apple's first iPad mini, presumably upgrading the pint-sized tablet to feature a Retina-quality display. We heard that the new mini might launch sometime in March... but then we were moving back to sometime in the fall... then it was April... and lately we've been returning to the idea of a fall launch, once again. Now there are claims that won't new iPad mini at all this year, and that the Retina display might not be a part of (all) the upgrades. Well, to be fair, it sounds like Retina is still on the table, but ...

With a new iPhone, a new iPad, and the debut of the iPad mini, Apple pretty much refreshed its whole mobile iOS product lineup last fall. While that normally might have us thinking that we'd have another full year to wait before getting word of new products, Apple had already exhibited signs of wanting to speed up device cycles, dropping two brand new iPads just a matter of months apart. This year, rumors have similarly looked to the idea of Apple announcing new iOS devices sooner rather than later, but so far nothing like that's come to pass. With summer just around the corner, we've ...

Apple's releases of each major version of iOS have all concentrated on WWDC, which makes a lot of sense since this is the World Wide Developers Conference that happens every year in June. As is obvious, iOS 7 was planned to be released on those dates, but that's actually only two months away if you think of it. Sources very close to Apple have begun the rumor that Apple is running behind on the development of the OS. Apparently the company is even using resources from OS X in their future 10.9 update (which sometimes varies in its release between WWDC and the fall) in order to reach the ...

We're a bit skeptical when it comes to rumors, regardless of the make or model they try to anticipate, but with all the Galaxy S4 buzz it would have been at least weird not to have some Apple hear-say making the headlines. On that exact note, reports are claiming knowledge of Apple's plans for its next iPhone and iPad models. The iPhone 5 will be followed by the iPhone 5S, claim said rumors, which will basically maintain the new design introduced by the iPhone 5, but pack better internals. As with the 4 vs 4S, the 5S will allegedly have a faster processor as well as a better camera (or ...

Rumors have been a little inconsistent when it comes to Apple's plans for its next iPhone (or iPhones, for all we know), but things have seemed much simpler for the next iPad mini. We'll probably see a new SoC employed, but the most notable change should be the move up to a denser Retina-quality display. While some earlier rumors suggested that the new tablet could be announced as soon as next month, more recent claims have placed its arrival further out, into fall. As we wait to learn more about this new model, a series of images have arrived, purporting to show the new frame for the iPad ...

Here's a new twist on the dozens and dozens of Apple hardware rumors that have come our way: while the chatter lately has seemed to point to models like the iPad mini 2 arriving sooner rather than later, some new rumors about Apple's timetable for this next wave of devices has the company releasing them quite a bit farther out, with new iPad models not launching until the fall. According to what iLounge calls a "trusted source", instead of a new iPads this spring, Apple could instead be planning to deliver both the iPad mini 2 and iPad 5 in October. The next-gen mini is supposedly being ...

Everyone seems to think that Apple is on a seriously accelerated product schedule when it comes to its tablets, and after last year's arrival of two separate iterations of the full-sized iPad, they might just have point. We've already heard about the idea of the next iPad showing up sometime in March, and that timeframe is once again getting some attention thanks to a recent analyst report, also suggesting that the second-generation iPad mini could arrive around the same time. Brian White of Topeka Capital Markets credits info uncovered from sources at the Consumer Electronics Show as ...

The iPad mini is fresh out of the gate, and we're already talking about Apple's follow-up device. Recently, we looked at rumors that got into some specifics about the changes Apple might be working on, including the expected resolution-bump up to Retina quality, as well as claims that that some re-engineering might shave a little bit off the tablet's weight. While there's nothing surprising about the idea that Apple could already be working on the next iPad mini, just when Apple might release such a device is a more contentious issue. After all, the rapid-fire iPad 3 and iPad 4 releases ...

One of the key disappointments for many when seeing Apple unveil the iPad mini was its relatively small resolution. While it is on par with the iPad 2 (and on an even smaller screen), competing products like the Nexus 7 offer somewhat higher resolutions (and on screens almost one inch smaller). According to the rumor mill Apple is planning on bringing the Retina display to the iPad mini (not that this would be a surprising move, also something we've continuously heard in the comments). Taiwan-based backlighting industry sources also claim that -- aside from a possible 2048 x 1536 ...

The iPad mini may have been one of the longest-running rumors to concern Apple iOS hardware, and now that the tablet is finally official, it shouldn't be any surprise that the rumor mill is already jumping at the chance to speculate about a follow-up iPad mini 2. Today, we take a look at one claim that seeks to reveal the changes Apple could have in store for the iPad mini 2's display. According to Chinese site DoNews, Apple could be looking to move the iPad mini 2 up from the original's 1024 x 768 resolution (a holdover from the iPad 2) to the 2048 x 1536 used in the iPad 3 and 4. On its ...
