Apple has been hard at work recently in China, making sure it's latest smartphone gets all the country-specific approvals necessary for the phone to be available in the world's largest mobile market. The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Technology has approved the iPhone 5 for sale in the country. There will be two variants of the phone: a WCDMA flavor and a CDMA-2000 variant. With these two editions the phone can go on sale on both China Unicom and China Telecom networks. However, a TD-SCDMA version is not yet available for the phone to operate on China Mobile but still, with the two ...

Back at the end of October, we heard about some significant shake-ups going on within the upper echelons of Apple management. One of the big names affected by the changes was Scott Forstall, who we learned would be leaving Apple supposedly because of his involvement with the iOS 6 Apple Maps disaster. It seems like the ripples of that failure continue to through the Apple hierarchy, and now Richard Williamson is the latest to feel its sting. Reportedly, Apple Senior VP Eddy Cue has targeted Williamson for dismissal following his work heading-up the Maps team. Cue is said to be engaging ...

After seeing that Thanksgiving and Black Friday traffic was dominated by Apple's iPad and iPhone, we're now hearing word that the Cupertino company has managed to tip the scales in its favor once again, pushing Android back to the second spot. The information comes from a Kantar World Panel and claims that iOS is once again the market leader in the US. Results are based on the last 12 weeks of smartphone sales, up until October 28, and places Apple's iOS on the top spot with 48.1% marketshare in the States (25% up year-on-year); former first place Android has fallen from 63.3% to 46.7%. ...

My recent jump to Windows Phone for my daily driver, in concert with my continued love affair with the Nexus 7 and endless respect for Apple's iPad, have provided an interesting opportunity to compare the three platforms in a number of ways. The OSes have many distinctions setting them apart, but maybe none so evident as their respective approaches to voice dictation. I'm not talking about Siri or S Voice or Google Now here; just the stock speech-to-text dictation software you'd use if you were drafting an email or text message by voice, or speaking a shopping list out loud for your ...

LG Display and AU Optronics are both supplying displays for Apple's iPad mini but according to reports the latter is facing some production capacity issues, as described by 'sources familiar with the matter'. Both companies are "main display suppliers" but Digitimes is reporting that the majority of iPad mini tablets are equipped with LG screens. Four million panels have been shipped for the iPad mini this month alone and out of these most of them are allegedly made by LG Display. However, because of AU Optronics' poor yield, Apple is expected to only sell six-to-eight million iPad mini ...

This is one of those rumors we've seen in the past, like the one where Samsung reportedly terminated its supply contract with Apple or the one concerning the alleged 20% price increase the South Korean manufacturer imposed for processors. Today's rumor refers to batteries and the report comes from China Business News. It claims that Apple has to turn to its alternative battery manufacturers -- Amperex Technology Limited and Tianjin Lishen Battery -- for the iPad (and MacBook Air) after Samsung reportedly halts supply. However, previous reports were all debunked and information denies ...

Apple's online Store might be down for the moment and it's probably because of the Black Friday deals which include, alongside iPads, computers, accessories and iPods. Keep on refreshing and you might get lucky! While an unlocked iPhone 5 is still not available from Apple -- and thus no discounts here -- you might want to take a look at the reduced iPad prices if you're in the market for an Apple tablet. The iPad With Retina Display -- that's the newest, "iPad 4" -- has been discounted by $41, $51, or $61, depending on the storage option. You can get it for $458, $548, or $638 for the 16-, ...

Whether this is Black Friday-only or it will be a permanent offering is unknown but if you want to grab a cheap iPhone 5 and you don't mind the unit being refurbished, AT&T has started offering (web only) the first refurbished iPhone 5 devices since Apple introduced its latest smartphone. The 16GB version will go for $99.99 while the 32GB variant will set you back $199.99. If you're a heavy gamer, have tons of apps and a lot of multimedia, you might opt for the 64GB flavor for $299.99. Both black and white options are available but the prices refer to online purchasing only and they ...

The Nexus 4 launches, and a man in Pennsylvania does his best to keep Google's latest and greatest -and slipperiest- from sliding off tabletops. The Lumia 920 lands, and a man in Boston moves back into an old apartment called Windows Phone - but the place isn't the same as he left it. The Droid DNA launches, and all America is atwitter with talk of 1080p, nonremovable storage, and HTC making Sense out of Jelly Bean. And over in Romania, one man watches, waits, and wonders what all the fuss is about. That's about the shape of this week's installment of the Pocketnow Weekly podcast, on the ...

Yesterday, about 24 hours ago, we reported that Nokia has released its -- now rebranded -- HERE maps for iOS, making it available for iPhone and iPad. Today, 24 hours later, the application is already the fourth application in the top free iPhone app list on iTunes, way above popular titles like Pandora, Spotify, Twitter, or even some Apple apps. After iOS 6 removed Google Maps from the system, users of the iPhone 5 -- as well as previous version of the iPhone and iPad that were updated to iOS 6 -- were left with Apple's own maps and some alternatives proposed by Apple itself after the ...

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and so is Black Friday, the official start of the holiday shopping season. Apple is taking this opportunity to release two new ads for the iPhone 5, the first being a festive one -- with Thanksgiving, family, pictures and Shared Photo Streams -- while the second emphasizes on a feature which is present on most modern smartphones: in-call noise cancellation. The iPhone 5 is Apple's latest phone running iOS 6. While the hardware has been improved in every aspect, the outer design follows the same principles as the previous two models. This, coupled ...

The Here maps were announced by Nokia last week and we knew to expect an iOS iteration, among others. It appears that the application is now available in the iTunes App Store for both the iPhone and the iPad. When Apple's CEO Tim Cook apologized for the poor experience in iOS 6, he offered some alternatives available in the App Store until Apple's own mapping solutions become what they should have been. Here maps by Nokia is such an alternative mapping solution (now that Google Maps is no longer the default and a new iteration is yet to arrive) and, according to the description, it brings ...

Apple Stores are present in more and more countries and regions but you won't find this Apple store in your neighborhood or on the official list online. This is because Apple has apparently opened up a store within eBay, though there is no official confirmation of this report just yet as both eBay and the Cupertino-based manufacturer refrained from comments. It is called "Refurbished Outlet" and you can access it by following the source link below. The page allows you to purchase reconditioned Apple hardware and there are quite a lot of similarities between this page and Apple's ...

It's been almost a month since Apple introduced the iPad mini and the fourth generation iPad; the initial WiFi-only variants were selling rather well, according to Apple, which was quick to brag about three million units over the first weekend of sales (starting November 2), double the previous first weekend record of 1.5 million for the iPad in March. Those who ordered the Cellular models should get them soon (some elite few already got them) but if you didn't pre-order yours you can pick one up, either the iPad mini or the fourth generation iPad, from AT&T and Sprint. Both carriers ...

When iOS 6 first landed, we started hearing reports from some users of unexpected, wildly excessive data consumption. Since then, Apple's released iOS 6.0.1, which seems to set things right for many users, but just what was going wrong in the first place? The guys over at PRX Labs were curious, and after a little detective work, think they may have stumbled on to the cause. With the introduction of iOS 6, Apple seems to have made some big changes to the operation of the platform's Audio Playback framework. Apps use this system to stream and play audio, but some inefficiencies result in it ...
