Taking a break from all the new smartphone hardware we’ve been looking into over the past few days, this evening we learn of maintenance updates in the pipe for a couple older Android handsets. Both the Droid 2 Global on Verizon and Samsung’s Intercept on Sprint will soon be getting some updated software.
The Intercept’s update, bringing the phone up to system build FB01, looks like relatively minor one, by all accounts. Considering the fiasco Sprint went through when delivering the QWERTY slider’s Froyo update, keeping things short and sweet sounds like [...]
Earlier this year Apple considered that Samsung is ripping it off by copying its iPhone design and applying it to a couple of its own smartphones. Cupertino claimed to take a look at Samsung’s upcoming models and the Korean company instantly responded demanding the same, plus adding in a couple of patents to raise the stakes.
If the original complaint referred to designs of the Samsung Captivate, Continuum, Vibrant, Galaxy S 4G, Epic 4G, Indulge, Mesmerize, Showcase, Fascinate, Nexus S, Gem, Transform, Intercept, and Acclaim smartphones, Apple has amended it to add an [...]
According to rumors, Virgin Mobile’s Samsung Intercept should have been updated to Google Android 2.2 before April but, even if a couple of weeks late, the smartphone just got its Froyo treat according to reports.
The update arrives over-the-air, in phases as it rolls out, and after successfull installation you’ll be greeted with a vanilla flavor of Android — yes, no more Wiz UI. Besides that, it’s your typical Froyo with all the goodies coming from a lower platform version to make your QWERTY-enabled 800MHz Intercept feel a little bit snappier. Let us [...]
When Virgin Mobile first let its Samsung Intercept users know that Froyo would finally be coming their way, it just gave us a general springtime ETA. To its credit, when it looked like it was able to narrow down that broad window it did so, letting us know that the Android 2.2 update would be out sometime around March 25. Even allowing for a little bit of stretch there, it’s safe to say that delays have cropped up. Now the carrier has a new date in mind, informing users to expect Froyo on April 11.
Virgin Mobile has been reportedly contacting Intercept owners via SMS, [...]
When Virgin Mobile USA said that users of its Samsung Intercept could look forward to an Android 2.2 update “sometime this spring”, we had no idea just how soon it meant. The company has posted a follow-up tweet clarifying that it meant VERY early spring, with a targeted release date around March 25.
Consider it a loose release date, since you might end up waiting until early the following week, but it’s safe to say that the update is on-schedule for a release before April. After all of Sprint’s problems with the Intercept, we were expecting Virgin to [...]
We’d forgive you for being apprehensive about it, especially considering the mess Sprint made when trying to send out its update last month, but Virgin Mobile users will shortly have the chance to upgrade their Samsung Intercepts to Froyo.
The carrier tweeted today that it will start providing its customers with Froyo for the Intercept sometime this spring. While that means that there’s still a few months of waiting to go (all the while, putting up with news about even more advanced Android releases), it will hopefully give Virgin a chance to get its ducks in a row [...]
We had thought that something like this would be impossible in this day and age of meticulous carrier testing, but apparently the Samsung Intercept Android 2.2 Froyo update which started rolling out on Friday has been bricking phones left and right, forcing Sprint to pull the package down and initiate damage control. The Sprint Community forum thread on the issue has already stretched to ten pages, with anecdotal evidence suggesting that the update wasn’t fully baked before it was pushed to subscriber handsets — which may be why they get stuck on a Samsung boot screen after [...]
Now that Android 2.3 Gingerbread has been released, Samsung’s Intercept is getting an update — to Android 2.2 Froyo. Since Samsung has had its hands on Gingerbread for quite some time now while they were building the Nexus S, the of this update is enough to frustrate not only Intercept owners, but owners of various Galaxy S phones.
Which raises another question: why is the Intercept getting a Froyo update before the Galaxy S phones? One could speculate that Samsung is going to just straight to Gingerbread, but that’s unlikely. What’s more likely is the [...]
