Read OnIt's been nine days since Apple publicly released iOS 6.1, and two since team evad3rs launched its evasi0n untethered jailbreak. That spelled an end to the four-and-a-half month grace period Apple enjoyed where none of its users running current software could employ an untethered jailbreak. Today we learn that Apple has already started seeding an iOS 6.1.1 beta to its developers, making us wonder if the company is trying to quickly shut the door on the evasi0n jailbreak. From what we heard yesterday, evasi0n relies on a whole bunch of separate exploits in order to worm its way into iOS ...

While most of us are only going to focus on the end results of a massive hack like the one the evad3rs managed to pull off to produce their evasi0n jailbreak, some of us smartphone fanatics are just as interested in exactly what steps needed to be taken to overcome Apple's heavyweight iOS security system. Luckily for us, evad3rs member David Wang (planetbeing) spoke to Forbes to reveal just what tricks evasi0n uses to sidestep Apple's protection. Wang's report isn't quite a full technical description of exactly what evasi0n does to achieve its jailbreak down to every last system call, but ...

To Jailbreak or not to Jailbreak, that's the question we've received everywhere for the last 24 hours since Evasi0n was released, and we do understand the concerns of many of you. The fact of the matter is that it's really a matter of personal preference, and while some may be extremely inclined to do it because of their daily needs of their iPhone or iPad, some users don't really use their iOS products in a way that would warrant it. Jailbreaking an iPhone is very different to rooting an Android device. On Android, rooting allows you to load custom ROMs that enable you to really push the ...

There have been plenty of rumors suggesting that Apple's interested in moving beyond simply selling its users music through iTunes as an a la carte experience, and introduce something along the lines of services like Spotify, where users can get access to a huge library of music to stream for an ongoing monthly fee. Despite all the reports along this line, we've yet to see anything of the sort materialize, an absence that separate rumors have pegged to Apple's struggles in working out the necessary licensing agreements with rights-holders. Rumors suggest that this kind of service could ...

Evasi0n was finally released today for all iOS 6 compatible devices, and it’s as easy and stable as the most popular Jailbreaks we’ve seen in the past. Jailbreaking will allow you to side-load applications and services to iOS 6 that Apple has either not intended or not considered for your device. And as we historically know, many of these solutions have served to make iOS what it currently is since Apple has hired a couple of the ...

Earlier this week, following Apple's launch of iOS 6.1, we told you about how all signs were pointing to the release of an untethered jailbreak supporting all the latest iPhone and iPad models for this Sunday. Team evad3rs has since put up a website to keep interested iOS users up to date on their progress towards getting the code ready for a release, and by the looks of things, that Sunday estimate could well be within their reach. We now know that the jailbreak itself will be called evasi0n, and according to the team, they're about 68% of the way done from starting with the exploit ...

Now that iOS 6.1 has landed, where's the rumored jailbreak? We've been hearing that a fully-working untethered jailbreak has been nearly ready for public release, and that the developers behind it were waiting for Apple to deliver iOS 6.1 before its distribution, in order to prevent the company from closing up any holes used to achieve the needed exploits. We've got some good news along those lines, and while nothing's official just yet, it sounds like the jailbreak could get here sometime this weekend. There was always a chance that, even with the jailbreak still private, Apple could ...

Life frequently defies our expectations. For example, if it's your first full season covering mobile-technology trade shows, sometimes you find your expectations for a nice, quiet lull between CES and MWC completely upset -toppled, really- by reality. The bright side: you get to hear all the latest news and gossip surrounding Galaxy S IV and Note 8.0 speculation; HTC's Droid DNA upgrade with a very James ...

Lately, it had seemed like progress on an untethered iOS 6 jailbreak, one supporting even the iPhone 5, had slowed to a halt. We heard that work would continue out of the public eye, but just when would we see any results? Well, now it's sounding like a release could be ready any day now, and all we're waiting for is Apple to get around to distributing iOS 6.1 updates. Notable players in the iOS development scene have been tweeting about jailbreak progress, and the encouragement they've spouted for Apple to hurry up and release iOS 6.1 seems to suggest that will be the impetus for the ...

January: the post-holiday comedown mixes with the post-CES recovery and pre-MWC quiet to form a lull of epic proportions. Fortunately though, leaks and rumors never stop, and we've got a few of them to bat around on this episode of the Weekly. Today, Joe Levi and Anton D. Nagy each return to the podcast to talk rumored Sony Xperia tablets, LG Windows Phones, and the will-it-never-die speculation surrounding a cheap iPhone. Also making the cut: the HTC M7 and Samsung Galaxy S IV, the Huawei Ascend W2, and some far-out pseudo-news regarding LG's supposed "Nexus 5" and "Nexus 7.7." All that, ...
