A couple days back, we saw Apple release iOS 6.1.2, taking care of the buggy support for Microsoft Exchange servers that had popped up recently. While that was great to see arrive, we were left wondering what happened to the expected fix for the lock screen bypass hack that had been uncovered last week. We were hoping to see another quick release, but now it's looking like we might have to wait a little while before that fix goes public, as it's just been implemented in the new iOS 6.1.3 beta. Apple released iOS 6.1.3 beta 2 to developers today (after the recent release renumbering, having ...

Recently, we've told you about a number of bugs that cropped up in recent iOS releases. There was the problem with devices connecting to Microsoft Exchange servers, there was the lock screen bypass, and there was the issue with ineffective "Don’t Allow Changes" settings. We heard that Apple was actively working on resolving at least some of these problem, ans that a new iOS release would be coming soon. This week, we get to see the fruits of that labor, with the distribution of iOS 6.1.2. While this is a step towards fixing things, the only issue 6.1.2 resolves is the Exchange problem. ...

To Jailbreak or not to Jailbreak? That is the question. In our previous episode of Top 5 we discussed the reasons why we believe you should Jailbreak, but still, we know many of you are still debating it. In today's show we go through the top 5 most compelling reasons why you should think twice, or even skip. Some things are just not the right fit, and this could be one of them for you. Jailbreaking an iPhone is very different to rooting an Android device. On Android, rooting allows you to load custom ROMs that enable you to really push the hardware to the limit. In the case of iOS, ...

It has not been a good week for Apple and iOS 6. The arrival of iOS 6 brought a new bug wreaking havoc with Microsoft Exchange servers, yesterday we learned of a security vulnerability with the lock screen, and today we find out about apps that are ignoring the system's "Don't Allow Changes" setting. Don't Allow Changes allows you to lock certain device settings, requiring a PIN to modify them. It can be used by organizations that wish to provide their users with access to iPhones or iPads but maintain a level of control over what those users are able to do with them. One restriction locks ...

If you compare today's smartphones with the best handsets offered four or five years ago, it's truly astounding how far everything has come. Yesterday, I briefly explained in an editorial about a rumored Ultrapixel camera that mobile hardware and performance have began to transcend the boundaries of the limitations often associated with mobile technology. Rarely, however, do we stop and think about how powerful our pocket-sized computers truly are. But with mobile processors clocked at speeds that rival some full-fledged computers and featuring anywhere from two to eight cores, pinhole ...

So you jailbroke your iPhone or iPad after the evasi0n jailbreak process was released last week, but you discovered that it just wasn't for you. You prefer the stock feel of iOS over the seemingly never-ending sea of mods and tweaks. There's nothing to be ashamed of, and there's no reason to fret, even if you didn't backup before jailbreaking … like you should have. The unjailbreaking method is relatively quick and very easy. All you need is iTunes, your Lightning or 30-pin cable and your iDevice. A couple clicks and no more than a half-hour later, and you will be back ...

We recently shared with your a few reasons why you might want to think about ditching your lock screen, but for those of you who decide you still need one, especially when you're using it to keep your phone secure, the presumption is that said lock actually works. Unfortunately for Apple users, it looks like iOS 6.1 has made your phones a little less secure, upon the discovery of a limited bypass for the phone's passcode lock. Like similar exploits in the past, this attack hinges on the ability to still make emergency calls on a locked phone. Through some carefully timed taps and button ...

We've all been there. You pull your phone out of your pocket and notice something is off. Slide past the lock screen and you notice that, for whatever reason, your phone is back to factory settings. (For the record, I have had this happen with every mobile OS I have used to date.) Or maybe you have lost a phone. Having to go through the motions to get your phone back to how it should be is never a fun process. It's time consuming, and sometimes important information is gone forever, irrecoverable. Fortunately, there is a solution – precautionary steps that prevent sensitive or important ...

Last week, we saw Apple release the first beta of iOS 6.1.1, just a couple days after the first iOS 6 jailbreak was released. We wondered at the time if the new build might be an attempt to kill the jailbreak, but reports indicated that it didn't affect the jailbreak's operation. We knew at the time that it would deliver certain improvements to Maps for Japanese users, but now the true purpose of iOS 6.1.1 may be starting to become clear, upon rumors arriving that it will made public quite soon in order to fix 3G connectivity issues introduced with iOS 6.1. We showed you how at least one ...

With as complex as modern operating systems are, it's quite commonplace that the release of a new update, especially one going out to millions of users running a whole bunch of different devices, ends up causing a few unexpected glitches. That's especially true for Apple, with all the different iPhone and iPad models each release of iOS supports. With the recent arrival of iOS 6.1, it looks like just such a problem has crept up on owners of the iPhone 4S, upon reports coming in of issues with 3G connectivity. Carrier Vodafone has posted a message to its forums warning users of an issue ...

Even if it takes six Skype calls to make a podcast happen, we're gonna do it for you folks, because that's just the kind of guys we are. And it's a good thing, too; while the news cycle has calmed down somewhat in the wake of last week's big BlackBerry event, there's still plenty to talk about from the worlds of Android and Windows Phone, from rumors and speculation to ... well, no, just rumors and speculation, really. But it's scintillating stuff, especially if you're into things named "M7" and "Nokia Tablet." All that, plus listener mail and a heaping helping of Joe Levi's robot voice, ...

It's been nine days since Apple publicly released iOS 6.1, and two since team evad3rs launched its evasi0n untethered jailbreak. That spelled an end to the four-and-a-half month grace period Apple enjoyed where none of its users running current software could employ an untethered jailbreak. Today we learn that Apple has already started seeding an iOS 6.1.1 beta to its developers, making us wonder if the company is trying to quickly shut the door on the evasi0n jailbreak. From what we heard yesterday, evasi0n relies on a whole bunch of separate exploits in order to worm its way into iOS ...
