A little under two weeks ago, as part of one of Google's regular Wednesday app update binges, we saw a new version of Play Games arrive for Android users. While we learned of changes like improved leaderboards and some UI tweaks, the update seemed relatively minor – really, the only notable feature was to support invitations in multiplayer titles. Mostly only people that have been living under a rock haven't noticed that one of the biggest booms in game consoles years ago was local and remote multiplayer support. It paved the way for the networks we see today, and it's the reason why services like Game Center on iOS exist today to a certain degree.
