Now that the LG G3 Beat has been announced, it's time to start talking comparisons between it and 2014's other mini phones, including Samsung's own Galaxy S5 mini. As we don't yet have review units of either, spec comparisons will have to suffice for now, so let's do it -- this is LG G3 Beat vs Samsung Galaxy S5 mini. On paper, there's one clear winner between the S5 mini and the G3 Beat -- the Samsung takes the cake in almost every department, but remember that specs are almost never an exactly accurate gauge of performance. Things such as OEM skins and component quslity will determine ...

A disturbing trend has emerged over the last couple of years in the smartphone space. The mini device has been brought forth in an effort to sell – well - something to the masses. The S5 Mini, the HTC One Mini 2, the Xperia Z3 Compact, so many mini’s, so few alliterations. With the recent introduction of the S5 Mini, we decided it’s time to give this category of devices the good ‘ol Weekend Debate once over. There are two classes of mini device when you look at it. One of those classes only has one device in it, so it is, quite literally, in a class all its own. The mainstream ...

We here at Pocketnow, especially yours truly, have voiced our opinions on so-called "mini" smartphones several times now. For the last few years now, Android manufacturers have been creating and releasing smaller versions of their annual flagships. Last year, HTC introduced the HTC One mini following its game-changing One M7. This year, the Taiwanese manufacturer followed-up its One M8 with the One mini 2. LG released the G2 mini last year and is expected to announce the G3 mini later this year. And, of course, Samsung has produced miniature Galaxy S smartphones for the last few years – ...

If you look at the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini vs Sony Xperia Z1 Compact spec comparison sheet below, you'll immediately realize that, while both "mini" phones, they're in different leagues. While Samsung is packing a lot of features (both software and hardware) in the S5 mini, the phone that borrows the flagship's name doesn't pack specifications that are worthy of a flagship. The general mentality OEMs have used in the past was to release "mini" (smaller) versions of their flagships, which weren't only smaller in size, but also lower-specced. However, Sony managed to adopt a mentality which ...

Last month (June), HTC unveiled its One mini 2, a One M8 miniature look-alike, which we called a "petite luxury" device in our full review. Today, as a natural competition move (and also by tradition), Samsung has unveiled its own mini device, the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini. Needless to say that the fight between the two OEMs is going to be as fierce in the "mini" segment as it is in the flagship department, with the One M8 against the Galaxy S5. But how exactly do these two competitors compare in a spec-to-spec showdown? Check out the detailed Samsung Galaxy S5 mini vs HTC One mini 2 spec ...

After all the rumors and leaks we've seen in the past couple of weeks, Samsung has announced the Galaxy S5 mini, follow-up to last year's S4 mini, and this year's miniature version of its flagship, the S5. It is definitely a step-up from last year's model, and this year, Samsung has decided to include more from the flagship, aside from the looks and the name it tries to capitalize on. The heart-rate monitor is in for the active users among you, coupled with IP67 certified build, in addition to the fingerprint scanner for added security. Android 4.4 KitKat should have no problems running ...

It was just yesterday when we heard about the Galaxy S5 mini from Samsung, specifically being just around the corner, while the company announced four budget phones: the Galaxy Core II, Galaxy Ace 4, Galaxy Young 2 and the Galaxy Star 2. Today, Samsung announces Galaxy S5 mini, about a year after the announcement of the Galaxy S4 mini. Aside from sharing its bigger brother's name and general aspect, the Galaxy S5 mini has little in common with the flagship under the hood. We have a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED HD display with 720 x 1280 resolution, a quad-core 1.4GHz processor, 1.5GB of ...

There is no doubt about it: the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini will make an appearance, sooner or later. Every year, Samsung releases a Mini version of its flagship. However, there's little in common between the siblings, aside from the Mini (which is not so mini in most cases) trying to capitalize on the flagship's name. Usually, while the phone resembles the flagship, its specs are modest. This year, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini will be available starting mid-July, according to a recent report. It is expected to pack a 4.5-inch 720p display, Exynos 3 Quad (Exynos 3470) SoC running at 1.4GHz, ...

It's long been rumored that a Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini has been on the way, but we're only now seeing the first huge leak of the device. SamMobile has published a set of images showing the device off, making its similarities to the regular S5 apparent. In terms of the looks of the device, pretty much everything about it is similar to the Galaxy S5. It's difficult to tell the devices apart, with both rocking a perforated plastic back, removable back cover, and heart rate scanner. The specs are where the two handsets differentiate -- an unannounced Samsung Exynos 3 chip at 1.4 GHz is ...

With the launch of the Galaxy S5 Active, the GS5's family of closely related smartphones is finally starting to get fleshed-out. The Galaxy K zoom really got us going, since for all intents and purposes it's a GS5 Zoom, but the Active is at least the first of these spin-offs to maintain the GS5 branding. What about a GS5 Mini to go with it? We've been seeing more and more evidence for this model, but today we might get our first actual look at the hardware, as we also take a peek at what's next for the GS5 itself. Well, it may not match some of the renders we've seen (which were a little ...

Samsung Galaxy S flagships aren't just smartphones: they're progenitors. From those single devices we see spring a whole family of related models, and this year should be no different for the Galaxy S5. We've been talking about it being joined by devices like a GS5 Mini or GS5 Neo, not to mention a quad HD GS5 Prime. Today we check out a new leak that attempts to firm-up details on a few of these models, while also setting us straight about another. We've already seen evidence pointing to the GS5 Mini being Samsung's model SM-G800, and the GS5 Prime arriving as SM-G906. This new leak ...

The Galaxy S5 Mini seems just around the corner at this point, as we have seen everything from possible specs to leaked images of the device already outed. The latest leak is a picture reportedly of Samsung UK's website, with the URL showing "SM-G800," the model number we are currently associating with the device. The device picture itself bears many design elements similar to the Galaxy S5, which doesn't exactly leave us surprised. There is the same perforated back and heart rate monitor, plus the version of TouchWiz looks to be an exact clone of the Galaxy S5's variant. The site also ...

Chances are, Samsung will release a Galaxy S5 Mini. We've been talking about the phone for a while now just on the expectation that Samsung would follow on with the tradition of launching a mini version of its flagship, but in the last couple months things started getting much more specific. We've heard about a couple potential model numbers that could represent this device, and most recently we even saw official mention of the name “S5 Mini” on one of Samsung's own sites. We're back to looking at Samsung itself for evidence this afternoon, with possible confirmation for one of those ...

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Active kicked off the durable/outdoors smartphone trend in the South Korean manufacturer's product portfolio last year, and, instead of opting for a separate device in 2014, Samsung has decided to make the Galaxy S 5 flagship waterproof from the very start. We do know (based on last year's experience) that there will be a Galaxy S5 Mini, but what we didn't know, comes to us from none other than Samsung (its New Zealand page). Linked below (and extracted in the screenshot) you will see general conditions for warranty exclusions in case of improper use of the S5 and S4 ...
