Last week gave us a couple great opportunities to learn about the latest feature coming to the Paranoid Android custom ROM project, the remixed take on Facebook Chat Heads we came to know as Halo. We got to check out some videos of the feature in action, but were really looking forward to the chance to try it out for ourselves. Well, while you were busy enjoying the lovely spring weather this weekend, Halo quietly decided to show its face, and the first ROMs implementing the feature are now available. Paranoid Android ROMs implementing Halo are now available for the Nexus 4, Nexus 7, and ...

Ready to try out the latest smartphone and tablet OS to hit the scene? It's still very much in development, and this preview is not intended for immediate use as a daily driver, but if you want a peek at what could be the next big thing in mobile platforms, the Ubuntu Touch Developer Preview has just arrived for Galaxy Nexus (GSM only), Nexus 4, Nexus 7, and Nexus 10 devices. The installation process is relatively straightforward, but it also assumes a certain level of comfort with Ubuntu and working with the command line shell; there's no point-and-click Windows or Mac app to deploy the ...

The Android 4.2.2 roll-out process has started this week and users of the LG-made Google Nexus 4, Asus-made Nexus 7, Samsung-made Nexus 10 and Galaxy Nexus are receiving their OTA notifications as we speak (or are already enjoying the point update on their devices). Android 4.2.2 factory images are up for anyone to grab for the devices above. Make sure to download and save them in a safe place as they'll help you revert to stock should anything you do on your phone result in unwanted results. Also, those who have not yet received the OTA notification can head over to the source link and ...

We know that the first original smartphone models running the new Ubuntu mobile OS will be coming out this October, and back at the CES we got to check out the software running on a Galaxy Nexus, with the promise that a developer preview of that version would be available sometime this month. Today, Canonical reveals just when you'll be able to get your hands on it, announcing a release scheduled for February 21. It's not just the Galaxy Nexus that will be able to use this early Ubuntu release, but the Nexus 4, as well. This so-called Ubuntu Touch Developer Preview will arrive alongside ...

The latest update to Android 4.2 Another Flavor of Jelly Bean has started to roll out to select Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7, and Nexus 10 devices. Suspiciously absent are reports of an update for Google's latest flagship device, the Nexus 4. This version, 4.2.2, is a 0.0.1 update to the operating system and weighs in around 46MB (depending on which device you're installing it on), so to say it's a "minor update" is a bit of an understatement. The code hasn't yet hit the AOSP, so custom-ROMs based on it aren't being developed just yet. In the meantime, if you own the GSM variety of the Galaxy ...

The report according to which Android 4.2.2 was supposed to land mid-February turned out to be right as the refresh is reportedly being pushed out to Nexus devices, namely the GSM Galaxy Nexus, the Nexus 7, and Nexus 10 tablets. While we haven't received the update yet there are more and more reports that seem to confirm its existence. The build is JDQ39 but at the moment there is no exact information on what it contains. We can definitely expect some bugfixes and performance enhancements but whether the Bluetooth fix is included is yet unknown. We'll let you know once the refresh hits ...

A Bluetooth fix was mentioned by a certain Google employee which could be one of the features in the upcoming Android 4.2.2 update -- spotted in the wild on Nexus 4 devices -- but unfortunately the new Android codes we've seen over the weekend appear in AOSP are not referring to this point-update. According to reports, unnamed Google employees rocking a Nexus 4, 7, 10, and Galaxy Nexus phones are currently testing Android 4.2.2. International Business Times claims to have tested the updates and concludes that it's "minuscule at best, with minimal changes to security and bugs". Should be ...

If your phone or tablet is in Google's Nexus family you can quickly and easily restore your device to the latest, stock image. If you've already applied a custom ROM and don't want it anymore, want to force an update to the lastest version of Android, or even convert your YAKJUxx Galaxy Nexus to a TAKJU or YAKJU version for faster OTA updates, this is how you do it. Before we get started, following these instructions will wipe what's on your device, and anytime we talk about flashing there's a risk (albeit slight) that your device may never wake up again. Proceed at your own risk. Next, ...

Even though the Verizon Galaxy Nexus was at times lagging behind its unbranded sibling when it comes to updates, it was nonetheless the go-to phone for Big Red customers that were Android enthusiasts who preferred the "pure-Android" way. Released back in November 2011, the Samsung-made Galaxy Nexus was the successor of the Nexus S. A little more than one year after its release Verizon has retired the phone which has now reached end-of-life status on the carrier. The carrier's online webpage no longer lists the device, though if you're lucky you can find some pre-owned ones on the internet. ...

There are plenty of entities looking to upset the balance of power between the major smartphone platform players; whether that's Firefox OS or Tizen, 2013 will see many of them take their first shots in the ring. Ubuntu's also a member of that club, and we just learned that the first Ubuntu download for Galaxy Nexus hardware will be made available next month. At the CES tonight, we had a run-in with just such a handset, letting us take an early look. As you can see in this demo, Ubuntu is all about rethinking the smartphone UI. That means fewer on-screen buttons, and an increased reliance ...

Google started selling their Nexus 4 and tablets with Android 4.2 earlier today -- though the ordering process hasn't been ideal. Another special treat was the beginning of Google's roll-out of Android 4.2 to Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7 owners. As with all updates, the Android 4.2 roll-out will come to your device when it's your turn in line. We're not that patient, so of course we found out how to get the official OTA update and flash it on our devices without having to wait in that dreaded line! First off, like any other "flashing" procedure, you assume the risk of potentially bricking your ...

With pre-orders starting for the Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 devices it is a normal move for Google to start delivering the new version of the OS to older Nexus phones. It appears that this is exactly the case as there have been plenty of reports of Android 4.2 popping up as an OTA update for Galaxy Nexus phones. According to reports, only GSM flavors of the Galaxy Nexus are getting the refresh, complete with Gesture Typing, Photosphere and all the other cool stuff (sans multiple user support). Furthermore, if you have a Takju device you can grab the update manually from this link and play ...

One of the cool things about the mobile technology sector is its massive scale, and the sheer volume of tech news that flows daily as a result. A lot of that is hard news, but some, inevitably, is the less-firm stuff: leaks, renders, rumors, and so on. As a whole, the tech media does a fairly good job of separating the wheat from the chaff, but sometimes fakes are so good -or so alluring- that they slip by. Such was the case with the rumored Sony Nexus X smartphone "leaked" a few weeks back, a rainbow-unicorn of a device which, like so many of its ilk, ultimately proved too good to be ...
