Watch today’s Pocketnow Daily as we talk about our Samsung ATIV S review along with some specifics on why this phone is so hot. Then it’s more $99 Nexus 7 talk, even though the price tag has grown a bit to $130 or $150. Then Samsung returns to the news, this time because they’ve just confirmed that they will be offering their Windows Phone legacy customers the 7.8 upgrade. Apple then shows us how they don’t care about start-ups by the results of a recent story regarding the POP charger for iOS devices. We end today’s show by talking about LG and how their [...]
According to an AT&T Community Manager’s posting, the carrier is not planning to offer the Windows Phone 8107 update. The refresh solves the famous “keyboard bug”. Of course, as with any Windows Phone update, carriers can skip one but need to offer the subsequent one, which is cumulative anyways.
However, we need to remember Eric Hautala’s famous post: “In the months ahead, we’ll continue to send out firmware and maintenance updates as needed. These will be available across the globealthough not everybody will receive or require them. It [...]
Of course life is much easier and more fun for many Samsung Windows Phone owners since the custom MAGLDR bootloader was released. However, instead of resting on their laurels, the Dark Forces Team is hard at work and this time they managed to run Windows Phone build 8757 on an SGH-i917R Focus.
We’ve already heard of Windows Phone Build 7.10.8745 not so long ago but it looks like 8757 takes it up a notch in anticipation for Windows Phone Tango. We don’t know exactly what’s changed in this newer build or whether the Team will release a custom ROM based which will [...]
Windows Phone developers have a dizzying assortment of options for unlocking their smartphones, granting differing levels of access to the system. While the most popular may be the official Microsoft unlock, which was also offered through Chevron Labs, there are also interop unlocks and fully-unlocked ROMs. That last option is arguably the most appealing for users looking to get really down-and-dirty with custom software, allowing for the execution of native code as used in projects like the Opera Mobile port we told you about in December. Problem was, those unlocked ROM options have [...]
It’s always good to have software updates for current hardware because you know that on one hand, your OEM and/or carrier are still supporting your device and on the other hand, new functionality is added and/or bugs are ironed out.
The HTC HD7, HTC Mozart and the Samsung Focus all recently got software updates. While the update for the first two phones is available in certain European regions, the Samsung Focus is of course an American phone and U.S. users should receive the notification. What’s in the package? According to reports, it’s Internet Sharing for [...]
For most of us, Windows Phone 7.5 Mango is now a reality, and we’ve managed to upgrade our devices without too many hiccups. Not everyone is so lucky, though, and owners of the Dell Venue Pro and version 1.4 of the Samsung Focus hardware are patiently waiting for news of the their Mango updates to arrive. We can’t yet break the good news, but at least there’s progress being made, with Microsoft updating its own Windows Phone Update Schedule page.
Both the Dell Venue Pro and Samsung Focus 1.4 on AT&T are now in the “testing” phase of their Mango [...]
We knew of AT&T’s upcoming Windows Phone Mango line-up since mid-September, featuring the Samsung Focus Flash, Focus S and HTC Titan. Thanks to the carrier we now also know that the two Samsung devices will arrive on November 6.
While new phones are added to the line-up, older devices are getting phased out reaching their end of life. As such, AT&T has put the Samsung Focus and the HTC HD7S on GoPhone Prepaid offers. It appears that the online-only offering was a huge success, coupled with the relatively low price of the Prepaid deal, as the Samsung Focus is [...]
If you were interested in picking-up some first-generation Windows Phone hardware on AT&T, you had better get your act together and move quickly. We just heard about the Surround, with its unique slide-out speakers, being marked for end-of-life status. It now looks like AT&T may be wiping its stable of Windows Phone devices clean, with the Samsung Focus and LG Quantum now joining the Surround in the EOL club.
This news comes via a pair of screenshots from AT&T’s internal computers, where both phones are clearly marked as having reached their end-of-life [...]
Windows Phone Mango is probably the most anticipated platform (refresh) for mobile devices coming out of Redmond. Those lucky (brave) enough already got a taste of Mango using Beta or RTM versions and, while we showed you how to downgrade to NoDo, it appears that Microsoft will make an upgrade path available that doesn’t need you to revert. Here’s the status of the Mango updates for the U.S. carriers, according to current reports:
Sprint will most probably start the roll-out process of Mango for its Arrive Windows Phone. If the information on its own support page is [...]
AT&T continuously tries to remain the “premier” carrier for Windows Phone and, after making its Mango line-up public recently, turns out that the carrier is planning to roll-out Mango updates starting September 27.
WPCentral obtained information about the roll-out process for Mango destined for the HTC Surround, LG Quantum, Samsung Focus and HTC HD7S. The first free will reportedly get the updates starting September 27 and the HD7S will get its Mango treat mid-October. As far as the Focus is concerned, depending on your model, you’ll get the updates on [...]
A month ago we saw how you could update your Windows Phone to the latest Windows Phone Mango Beta but since then Redmond updated the build and released the Beta 2 of Mango which brings quite a lot of changes.
In this video walkthrough we’ll show you how to update basically any Windows Phone to the latest build 7712 of Mango, the Beta 2. The prerequisites are quite the same: you have to have a NoDo-powered Windows Phone and make sure you’ve got plenty of battery juice left!
1. Download the tool found at step 1 at the link below, version 0.3. 2. Download and [...]
A month ago we heard from Microsoft telling the world that the Windows Phone update for the 1.4 version of the Samsung Focus was out of testing and in scheduling phase. Now Microsoft is happy to announce that the update is rolling out.
It will be a cumulative update meaning it will deliver both Windows Phone 7 NoDo build 7390 as well as the security fix to patch the certificates in build 7392. If you have a 1.4 version of the Samsung Focus, connect it to your Zune client and check for an update. It should be available (or very soon) for you to upgrade.
Additionally there [...]
Samsung Focus 1.4 owners, your salvation is nearly here! Last week Microsoft updated us all that it had finally gotten the long-overdue NoDo update to this particular Focus revision into the testing phase. It looks like everything went smoothly, as Microsoft has posted today that testing is complete, and the update will be going out in the near future.
Just when Focus 1.4 users on AT&T will see NoDo hasn’t been precisely determined yet, but it’s currently being worked out, and Microsoft promises to post an update as soon as it has more information for Focus [...]
The situation didn’t change much over the past couple of weeks as some Samsung Focus owners on AT&T, especially those who were unfortunate to own another memory variant phone, haven’t yet managed to get the phone up to date.
According to Eric Hautala, AT&T is testing the update for Samsung Focus v.1.4 owners. This week’s update on the updates is rather short as there’s really not too much to brag about. If the update’s testing is successful, it will be followed by a scheduling phase with Microsoft and then pushed out to the phones. This [...]
The 7392 build of Windows Phone 7, the latest to date, is the one that comes after the NoDo update and applies some fixes to Internet Explorer’s vulnerability regarding the fraudulent certs affecting some websites.
In its weekly “update on the updates” post, Windows Phone Blog announced that Microsoft is scheduling the 7392 build for AT&T HTC Surround users, with other models to follow. As far as the Samsung Focus is concerned — which gave a couple of headaches to everyone –, Redmond is “actively scheduling the final set of tests” [...]
Microsoft has officially resumed the updating process for the Samsung Omnia smartphones back in May but unfortunately Samsung Focus owners weren’t that lucky. Some of them have still not received the long-waited pop-up informing them of an available update.
In his weekly post over at Windows Phone Blog, Microsoft’s Eric Hautala, GM, Customer Experience Engineering, after informing about more updates rolling out, is reassuring Samsung Focus owners that the company will not rest until the update is delivered to everyone left behind. “I want to assure Samsung [...]
Tomorrow’s going to be a big day for Windows Phone 7 software, no doubt, with plenty of Mango-related news in store for us at Microsoft’s New York City event. Rumor has is it, though, that it could be just as big a day for hardware, with the possibility that Microsoft will reveal nine new smartphones running its mobile operating system. As we wait to see just how factual that rumor ends up, something curious has happened to Samsung’s Focus that has us thinking that maybe we really are about to see a flood of new WP7 handsets.
Some AT&T retail partners are [...]
After halting Windows Phone updates for certain Samsung Omnia 7 and Focus smartphones, Microsoft has announced that they have flipped the switch to the “on” position once again and updates are being delivered to Omnia 7 users.
If you have a Samsung Omnia 7, connect it to Zune and manually check for an update. You might be lucky to have one ready for you: in case you didn’t get the NoDo update, you’ll receive a cumulative update of both NoDo and 7392 (security update); in case you managed to apply NoDo before the updates went dead, you’ll only get [...]
In a blog post last week where Microsoft announced the distribution of the 7392 security update for SSL certs, Eric Hautala also mentioned that some AT&T Samsung Focus owners did still not receive the NoDo update besides the update for the Samsung Omnia 7 being halted. One week later, things seem appear to be wearing the same status tag.
Microsoft’s GM, Customer Experience Engineering, updated again bringing unfortunately no good news: “I know some of you are eager for news on the Omnia 7 and Focus issues I discussed last week. We’re making progress, but I [...]
Free Zune passes from AT&T for Windows Phone 7 is not uncommon, we’ve seen it happen in the past and it’s on again, this time with the help of Amazon Wireless.
Until June 26 you buy any AT&T Windows Phone 7 and get three months of free unlimited music with Zune Pass. The total value of the Zune pass for the period is $44.97 and in case you’re not familiar with Zune, you get “unlimited access to over 11 million songs to stream or download, access to music on your Windows Phone 7, Xbox console or PC, and 10 free songs per month to download and [...]
AT&T sure seems to have a love/hate relationship with HSUPA. It’s got no problem boasting about how fast its network is, but try to find a phone that can take advantage of high-speed uploads, and you’ll rapidly find your choices shut-out – unless you want an iPhone, that is. Windows Phone 7 users who have configured their phones to use HSUPA and have just installed the new NoDo update may be noticing slower speeds, as the patch is apparently setting the devices to HSDPA-only.
Samsung Focus users can pretty easily set their smartphones to start employing [...]
We know that both the pre-NoDo as well as the NoDo update for Windows Phone 7 is about to begin hitting AT&T devices in a couple of days and Microsoft’s Eric Hautala lets us know the updates will also contain some special features.
The AT&T Windows Phone 7 updates will contains two special features, one of which is the neat WISPr support allowing devices to automatically switch to AT&T hotspots when available. The second will offer smartphones support for the AT&T Address Book.
On a general note concerning updates which we know not only contain [...]
